Fuck - this means they suspect cancer doesn't it?

I went for an appointment at 'the bum clinic' on Tuesday. I was told I need further tests and they would take weeks.
I've had a call today to say I've been referred for an urgent flexible sigmoidoscopy and have an appointment on Monday.
I know it could just be to rule it out, but it's the 'urgent' part of it that has thrown me.

Great news! They couldn't finish my sigmoidoscopy the last corner got me. I was in agony - I'd gone for no sedation (breastfeeding and driving myself) Gas and air wasn't enough at all!! Also found that I had awful stomach cramps for several days after and diarrhoea for a few days too. My whole digestive system was just upset! My problems we piles (the joy of birthing 9 babies!)

vipersnest1 · 22/07/2022 22:36

Thank you @Herejustforthisone!
@urrrgh46, the last time they could only image my descending colon. This time they got all the way across my transverse colon as well.
There is hope for you if you need to have it again.

Been on the "2 week" pathway 3 times. Twice for breast lumps and recently for bottom problems. Was seen a within a week and they said they wanted to do a camera up, and that also came in quickly. My consultant was clear it was to rule anything out rather than assuming it was cancer.
My only advice is take all the drugs they offer.

Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals · 22/07/2022 22:48

Brilliant news, op. Onwards!

TrashyPanda · 22/07/2022 22:56

Great news!

Dashel · 22/07/2022 22:57

Congratulations that is good news

MumofCrohnie · 22/07/2022 22:59

Is it not more likely that you may have IBD as your DD does? Did they take biopsies?

Glad they didn't find cancer. Huge relief for you!

honeyfox · 22/07/2022 23:12

Really happy you had good news x

vipersnest1 · 22/07/2022 23:13

I'm so sorry, tried to tag you alll in my reply then lost it.
Thank you to everyone who has posted with such lovely messages.
@Lisad1231981, I had midazolam to start with and the initial plan was for me to have entonox if I needed it, but they quickly realised that when I said it was hurting, it really was, and they added fentanyl. That did the trick apart from when they got to difficult bits where I needed to slow down my breathing until they had got past it. Then it was ok, so only two or three really painful places.
I was very grateful (and told them so), that they took their time and made sure that I was ok when I was struggling with it.

It’s not always cancer. I had this appointment and was diagnosed with mild Crohn’s disease.

OldFan · 22/07/2022 23:53

I've had quite a few cancer scares- always got the all clear or was something minor in the end.

CharlotteRose90 · 23/07/2022 00:17

I have 2 sigmoidoscopys a year as I have ulcerative colitis and frankly I’m out for the count once I had sedation. It’s definitely not too bad and i have adhesions too. In fact I have one in 2 eeeks. I normally wake up at the end when then their pulling the camera out.

Staffy1 · 23/07/2022 00:41

Really pleased for you, that must be a great relief.

AlrightyThen32 · 23/07/2022 00:48

Really great news OP this has genuinally made my night 🙂 I only came across your thread tonight and read through it all. So glad to hear the good news at the end 💐

Bangolads · 23/07/2022 01:20

Breathe. It’s terrifying and horrible I know. Bless you my love. I’ve had cancer many many many calls like this calling me back in. They are following a certain protocol, you have no clear idea where this might lead right now so honestly relax. That’s the best medicine for your body right now. Sending love xx

I'm so pleased to see your update. That's great news!

GP referred me for several tests without mentioning cancer.
The first they found and removed nodules which turned out were benign. I got a cancellation for the following Monday and they said I couldn’t have the medication/ sedation ( GP later was furious said it was ridiculous as no reason not to give it and he wrote a complaint) and I watched most of it on the screen. I had gas and air. All clear GP patted me hand when he told me results and then discovered I knew he suspected cancer.

Turned out all the pain, stomach, bowel issues were undiagnosed dairy intolerance which he hadn’t thought of.
I have sent some samples since and still all clear thank goodness.🙏 yours is clear too.

Take the sedation and you need someone to take you home and stay afterwards. DS stayed an hour or two but he was working so couldn’t stay all night like they wanted but he phoned me from work to check I was ok. I wasn’t so well just after the test so be aware you might not be. They kept me for a couple of hours on the ward.

Redsquirrel5 · 23/07/2022 03:03

Ah should have checked the date.
I am having a lot of trouble as the pages keep going on mumsnet so hard to read. I do usually read to the end and see updates, sorry I didn’t.

Great news though so pleased it went ok and results are clear you will be so relieved. Get yourself a treat. I did I bought myself a large M&S bouquet the sort I buy people for their birthday and never buy myself. Treat yourself tomorrow.😄

I dont want to make anyone eye roll.and I'm REALLY not belittling or being a twat.buuut breathing techniwues really really helped me get through it. Gwtting my breaths right, timing it with the ebb and flow of the needles, tubes, pushing.feeling it properly via my stomach not chest.it got me through it. And that is NOT minimising the pain of the procedure. But I really crunched down got those breathes right and I can honestly say it was a godsend.abd for the weeks later on bed rest.

This is such a tough one. I went to the doctor about a lump I could feel in my lower stomach. Next thing I was being urgently referred for a scan and bloods to look for ovarian cancer. Doc said straight away that’s what she was worried about. Thankfully I waited less than two weeks for the scan and they ruled it out. But my mind ran circles in that time. I nearly crashed the bloody car leaving the surgery I was so distracted. I hope all goes well on Monday. Deep breaths, I know it’s hard but as others have said try not to worry until you know something concrete.
