Fuck - this means they suspect cancer doesn't it?

vipersnest1 · 23/06/2022 12:30

I went for an appointment at 'the bum clinic' on Tuesday. I was told I need further tests and they would take weeks.
I've had a call today to say I've been referred for an urgent flexible sigmoidoscopy and have an appointment on Monday.
I know it could just be to rule it out, but it's the 'urgent' part of it that has thrown me.

browniesandcakes · 23/06/2022 22:32

Can you dm your symptoms to me so I can see if we have the same? So I know if I should ask for the same test

justasking111 · 23/06/2022 22:39

Having been through similar all okay barring piles I would try not to worry rather think of it as a procedure to rule out cancer

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/06/2022 22:41

I have been where you are, and I too have a disabled child (adult now) with a condition I was told was being ruled out. Now it looks like me and two of my daughters also have another condition.

I have had the camera in places I dont want it. But you know what? At no point was I as rude as you have been to people trying to help. You want reassurance from people who are sharing very private information but also being nasty to those you ask you for further details so they can help in your specific case. I suggest you think about that.

I wish you well.

Couldn’t have said it better.

@PyongyangKipperbang, well done for ASing me. The fact that I have a disabled adult child has nothing to do with this post, so I'm wondering why you did it and also why you've mentioned that here.
I'm also bemused as to what post you consider rude. Perhaps you or @Katya213 could enlighten me.... or you both here for the lols?

OP posts:
Herejustforthisone · 23/06/2022 22:48

I don’t think the OP was rude? Why are people having a pop at someone who is clearly understandably anxious and who didn’t immediately reply to a demand for their symptoms?

vipersnest1 · 23/06/2022 22:50

@Herejustforthisone, x-post. As I just said I can't see where I've been rude to anyone? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t think you were. I hope it all goes well and you can get reassurance there and then.

Ignore the posters saying ‘well, I was going to support you but you were mean to me so now I’m not. So there.’

vipersnest1 · 23/06/2022 22:59

@Herejustforthisone, thank you. It's all a bit crap just now and I really don't need posters to be tearing me apart when I haven't said anything to justify it.

@lljkk, I know the statistics are vastly in my favour, but I don't have a good experience with statistics - one of my dc has a severe disability that they inherited from me and XH.
@browniesandcakes, no, pain isn't one of my symptoms.
@PyongyangKipperbang, please see my post of 5 mins ago. Report me if you want, but don't waste my time and that if other members on reading your deliberately goady posts.

This. I mentioned it to illustrate that I understand how it is when the "just being ruled out" actually translates to "Yep, its a thing your kid has".

Hididng now.

As I said, I wish you well.

vipersnest1 · 23/06/2022 23:09

@PyongyangKipperbang, clearly I must be stupid but I still don't see where any of my posts have been rude.
Perhaps you could signpost me to them?
Thank you for wishing me well. This has been very stressful for me.
You still haven't said why you posted about my adult child, though. I'm interested to know your motive?

@IVFPrayingForBioChild, 'You're a very rude person.
It's an anonymous forum no one knows you.'
The mentioning anonymity here is true, but it's also true that you have asked a question that is very intrusive - and I didn't bother to name change as I don't believe I have made other posts related to this under this username.
Do you really expect me to post very personal details here so that your curiosity is satisfied? No-one has asked me that question except you. Maybe you ought to consider whether that's rude - I'd suggest it is.
Yes, I've had a finger up my arse, plus a small camera. That's more than I've ever had in over 50 years. Does that help to focus your brain on what I'm going through? And if you've had a similar experience why not say that? I'm very bemused, and frankly, pissed off by your comment.
I'm having a far more intrusive procedure on Monday. That's enough for me to deal with, plus the worry of dealing with this and other health problems I have going in at the moment.
Maybe you could have considered that before you posted.

It's quite usual for people to share their symptoms on here, especially if there's someone else who has been through the same thing. These threads can also act as a prompt to seek medical advice for anyone suffering the same symptoms and who reads it.

Sorry that you're facing this OPFlowers

SaggyBlinders · 23/06/2022 23:28

Sorry that it's come out of the blue and worried you so much OP.

I'd ring the endoscopy unit where your appointment is and ask to speak to a nurse if you have questions about why your referral is urgent, and what pain relief is available for the procedure.

I used to work in endoscopy, so will just say that if you have had bleeding from the back passage, then that ticks the box for an urgent/2ww flexible sigmoidoscopy. 9.9/10 it's nothing nasty like the c word, it's due to piles or a fissure. If the consultant had seen something that looked like cancer on your rigid sigmoidoscopy (assuming that that's what they did at your clinic appointment), then they would have requested a colonoscopy instead of a flexible sigmoidoscopy (a colonoscopy is a full examination of your large bowel, a flexi only looks at approx the first 1/3rd of it), and a CT scan.

I'm not sure if all endoscopy units offer intravenous sedation, but if they do then you will usually need someone to take you home. Gas and air is usually also available, and you can drive yourself home after having it. Best of luck.

FairyLightPups · 23/06/2022 23:42

Jesus christ OP you absolutely have not been rude! If you don't want to discuss your innermost body changes that is absolutely fine. You can worry about this referral without going into the why. You owe nobody on this board anything. What a bizarre response - boundaries are not rudeness ffs.

Sending you all the warm thoughts OP, as others have said they start with the most serious and work down. Good luck for Monday Flowers

I don't think Pyongyang advance searched you. She was just responding to your mention of your dd in an earlier post.

vipersnest1 · 24/06/2022 06:58

@SaggyBlinders, I don't have bleeding. I don't think I'll ring - they're probably busy enough and I can ask questions on Monday. (The sedation is something I would have considered, but my only options would be public transport which is an hour each way, or taxis which I can ill afford.)
@IdaFlowers, I've just re-read my posts on this thread and I didn't mention my DC. It's poor form really to drag details from one thread onto another. (I use the app and you can only NC on a PC unless the update allows it now, so only have the choice of names I've already used - and I'm stressed enough without buggering around trying to NC.)
I'm feeling a bit calmer today but it was the first thought in my head when I woke up.

You did mention your child that they inherited a condition from you and you xh.

You have also been very terse/rude to some of the posters, unnecessarily so.

I'm not going to bother quoting, but certainly towards the ivf poster and the one who agrees with her.

I hope that maybe today when you reread you raise this and have the good grace to apologise.

Everyone has empathy on this thread from what I said, but that doesn't give a green card to you being deliberately aggressive and rude. The only conduct that seems off, does appear to be your reactions I am afraid.

This is the post they were referring to. Anyway I hope they rule out what you fear and all the best going forward

vipersnest1 · 24/06/2022 11:07

I do need to apologise to @PyongyangKipperbang, as I misread the post where they referred to their own adult child - I have posted elsewhere about my own adult dc who is disabled and thought they were referring to my child.
The only place where I was maybe terse towards posters was in reply to the two who told me I was rude, apart from where I declined to discuss my symptoms - it's upsetting and embarrassing for me, and, in fact, the symptoms have no relevance to why I was posting.
I hope that's cleared things up for folks.

OP posts:
Jammysod · 24/06/2022 11:37

Someone might have already said this but... over 90% of urgent referrals do not find cancer.

vipersnest1 · 24/06/2022 19:07

@Jammysod, thank you. As I said earlier in the thread, statistics don't tend to go in my favour (not feeling sorry for myself, just stating a fact).
The combined odds of having a child with the disability they have and another who has had an awful autoimmune condition (now in remission thankfully) are 1 in 18 Billion, so I tend to be a bit sceptical when it comes to probability.
I am calmer now, but will probably be an absolute wreck on Sunday and Monday.
(Tomorrow I will have to have on a stoic face when I see DM as she will guess there's something wrong otherwise.)
Meanwhile, the letter from the hospital along with the prep that I need haven't arrived, so I hope they do in the post tomorrow.

And yet the chances of getting cancer is 1:2 doesn't make sense ?

vipersnest1 · 25/06/2022 17:24

Well, I managed to carry on as normally as I could. DM asked me if I was ok though so she must have been able to tell something was up.

OP posts:
Spabreak · 25/06/2022 17:43

I'm not sure if you still have the option of sedation but I would recommend it if possible as I found this procedure to be much more painful than the suggested, discomfort in the information leaflet. Not trying to worry you, just to offer some advice.

Hopefully it will all go well.
