My watch has sent me a warning to say my resting heart rate is high

Stupid question but should I do anything?! I feel absolutely awful, pretty certain I had a temperature this morning in bed, I was boiling hot and shivery. My nose is bunged up and my throat is killing 🙁

The photo of my watch is from just now, I've been sitting in the car for the last 10 minutes!

I had a similar heart rate when I had lost alot of blood and was extremely anemic (needed several blood transfusions).
Heart was working overtime.
If you are also out of breath and tired you may want to get levels checked.
I realise you also have sore throat etc but may be coincidence.
Hope it's just an overheated watch.

emmathedilemma · 23/06/2022 10:52

Do you feel like your heart is racing? I had a resting HR of 110-112 one morning due to side effects of medication and I felt terrible - dizzy and like my heart was pounding, it was definitely noticeable! Have you got a blood pressure monitor or anything else you can check it on? Mine always go up on my watch if i'm ill but only by 5-10bpm, 130 is very high for resting.

picklemewalnuts · 23/06/2022 10:52

Go home and rest.

Lots of fluids, paracetamol. See how you feel.

Ring NHS direct.

Surely you would feel/ hear your heart at that rate .. could your watch be wrong?

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 23/06/2022 11:21

Right, I've just had a lie down for 15 minutes, my bpm was 117 when I first laid down, then at the end of 15 minutes it was 107.

Sounds like covid.

Defiantlynot41 · 23/06/2022 12:17

Sounds like Covid to me too - I tested positive test and racing heart is my worst symptom ( resting HR currently around 100, normal for me is 48-53)

Herewegoagain84 · 23/06/2022 12:26

If you’re ill / have a fever, HR increase is a completely normal response from your body.

JoBrodie · 23/06/2022 12:51

When I had a resting heart rate of 130-140 at rest it turned out I had a chest infection (kind of a 'walking pneumonia') sort of thing. I had a temperature and was very breathless (it was that which made me go to A&E). I was admitted, but fine within a couple of days of antibiotics and monitoring. As I live alone I didn't hang about, I might have done the 'watch and wait' if I had others in the house to keep an eye on me. Resting (sleeping) didn't lower my heart rate at all though, so it may be different from your situation. This was in 2016 so long before Covid.

I was also dehydrated and 'cyanotic' (a bit blue around the edges as I wasn't getting enough oxygen). After fluids, paracetamol and antibiotics my heart rate dropped to about 90/100 by the first evening and normalised the next day.

Remember that if you'd been exercising your heart rate would likely be well above that so 130 isn't (by itself) a worryingly high rate - but if you're not doing anything it's telling you that your body is doing something that's tiring it out, so I would recommend seeking medical attention. Particularly if you're breathless or in discomfort, or if your heart rate persists in being high. I am not a doctor.

Hope you're feeling much better soon OP :)

I'm waiting to be seen in A&E now, I phoned 111 at 7 and they said either a clinician would ring me back within half an hour or they'd send an ambulance. Got to about 45 minutes and someone rang me and gave me the option of waiting 6+ hours for an ambulance or they would send a taxi. I've been waiting an hour now and I'm absolutely freezing! I don't know if it's actually cold in here or if it's just me. My watch has sent two more alerts, one at 8 and one at 10.

Hope you get seen soon. Infection can cause high pulse.

MadeForThis · 23/06/2022 22:52

You're in the right place. Hope it's nothing serious. But it's definitely sensible to get it checked out.

Vargas · 23/06/2022 23:01

Good luck OP, glad you're getting some medical care.

lljkk · 23/06/2022 23:06

Do you have a high fever, OP? That can make you feel freezing.

JoBrodie · 23/06/2022 23:13

Hope you're seen soon and things are stabilised for you within a day or two (or sooner!) and that all is well - I think you're in the best place. Possibly worth asking for a blanket if you're cold though?

I hope everything is ok with you and you get some answers from A&E. My watch alerted me to a high heart rate a few years ago, it turned out I was in severe heart failure even though I felt well otherwise. I ended up in hospital for 10 days, they believe it was caused by a virus (pre Covid). I am recovered now although still under hospital care, it’s definitely worth getting checked out just in case. I’d spent the day as normal before and my HR just shot up all of a sudden as I was watching TV that evening.
Good luck x

Bloody hell! Are you alright now?

I've had an ECG and they've taken some blood, just a game of more waiting now. These chairs are horrendous, my back and hips are killing me.

I'm still awake and just read through this. I hope you are all right. Personally I think you did the right thing heading to hospital xx

SkiingIsHeaven · 24/06/2022 00:49

My watch showed an irregular heart beat recently.

I had it checked out by the Doctor and was told that it was irregular but ok.

They said that I had done the right thing by having it checked.

You should definitely get that looked at.

SkiingIsHeaven · 24/06/2022 00:52

Sorry, just noticed that you are having it checked. You have done the right thing. Good luck.

Liglig · 24/06/2022 00:54

My brother gets high readings like that sometimes and it's usually stress or when he does certain things like smoking his e cigarette or after eating a large meal or playing a game on the computer.

Did you say you was driving when you got the high reading? If yes, driving may not seem hard but it's stressful, your using all your skills and mind to stay safe and concentrate on the road, that could make your heart beat fast too.

MsOllie · 24/06/2022 01:13

Good idea to get checked
I saw on Reddit a guy who noticed his HR monitor readings seemed a bit off when he was on his peloton, and then he noticed he wasn't able to easily hit his usual workouts/output
Got checked and he needs an aortic valve replacement

It's one of those things where it's probably nothing but should be looked at

hshbjamo · 24/06/2022 01:26

My watch said my resting heart rate was 127bpm a few weeks back and i kept getting a weird sinking feeling in my chest at the same
time. I had a few high readings over around an hour and some normal ones then it went back to normal completely. I didn't bother to get checked but this thread has made me realise how important it is to get checked out. I suppose you never know

Try this, take your pulse, then take your pulse and at the same time take a deep breath in and hold it.

One really common but not harmful irregular heart beat is due tot he heart and lungs being in contact when your lungs and heart are both moving.

OP

Hope you are seen soon.
