Trying Duolingo for the first for our upcoming Italian trip. This week I have learnt to say :
They are not forks
The horses drink the milk.

I wanted to learn how to order a g&t and teach my husband how to ask for the bill.

Yes - I also find the 'deductive learning' (glad to know that's what it's called!) works brilliantly. I pretty much do all of my active learning through Duo (the rest is consuming newspapers and podcasts) but I do have a couple of textbooks. I dipped into one recently and was looking at the lists of past tense verbs and realised I knew pretty much all of them, even the irregular ones, even though I've never sat down and memorised anything. I just know them because Duo has made me use them, and corrected me immediately whenever I get them wrong.

'The man understands women'

As if!! 😄

Dragging this thread up again to ask another question about this

So I started 13 days ago and am working through the schedule. It starts on 'Intro', then 'phrases', then 'travel' and so on

I worked through 'intro' and it gave me one crown. Then 'phrases' gave me 3 crowns and tonight i started on travel and its given me one crown.

However, just having a look again at 'phrases' I notice it says 'level 3 out of 6' and it also said 'lesson 1 of 3'.

But I dont understand why it says lesson 1 of 3 as I worked through all of them. So I thought I would click back into it in case I missed something and did another lesson but it was what I have already done and now it says Ive done 'lesson 2 of 3'

On 'intro' it says 'lesson 0/3' which cant be right as I worked through the whole of it. It also says 'level 1 of 6

I dont understand the levels either?

Does anyone know?

Just keep working through the levels till you get to five, after that you'll see that you can only do more practice sessions but not actual progression.

Once you get to level 1 it'll unlock some more and you can decide if you want to chop and change between them or just rattle through one at a time.

I've been doing Italian for a while. Current favourite phrase is "We do not hit our bull". Wonder if I can work that into holiday conversation with the waiter.

Re the deductive learning, I personally find I need to periodically actually look up some grammar rules in addition and that extra clarity then really helps me, but I have an exceptionally crap short term memory.

bellac11 · 04/07/2022 22:47

Ok so when it starts a new area (like phrases or travel) it doesnt mean Im finished on the area Im already on?

So I havent actually finished 'intro'?

its not clear to be honest!

Scianel · 04/07/2022 22:52

No it'll generally give you a new area once you've finished level 0 but you have more levels to go, you need to reach level 5 on each one.

I got this (screenshot attached) from the German course a little while ago, which frankly, has massively endeared the Germans to me if Duo really thinks this is a phrase I'll need!

I've never done Duolingo but I think I need to start. This is hilarious. Also a rich spurce of MN usernames perhaps:

So. I now know how to say 'they want you to eat / not to eat X' in Italian.

How do I say 'well, they can bugger off and mind their own business' 😄

bellac11 · 18/07/2022 19:22

Another question if anyone knows.

How on earth do I contact duolingo to ask a question, there seems to be no chat, no forums, no email address and no phone number?

My partner signed up this evening from a link where I had invited him but nothing has popped up to give me my duolingo plus week for free, which was the whole point of me asking him to do it!

drspouse · 19/07/2022 10:15

You can just get a duolingo plus week for free from an in-app ad, more or less any time.

Twopenny · 20/07/2022 18:50

@bellac11 if you can't find something on the app, the website version www.duolingo.com is worth checking as it has more features. Perhaps try here?

bellac11 · 20/07/2022 19:02

I use duolingo on a laptop. I dont understand apps.

For some reason a couple of weeks ago it gave me 5 days free of plus and I managed to clear all my broken hearts but now I have 22 and Id like to clear them again.

drspouse · 21/07/2022 12:14

You don't need Plus on a laptop - you get all the features there are on the app with Plus including free lives.
Or you can set up a Schools account and yourself as a learner as they seem to get it too (my DCs do this and they don't have the issue with losing lives, even on the app).

Thanks. Can you explain a bit more as I dont know what you mean by 'free lives'

At the moment I have 22 broken hearts and I'd like to clear them. The only way to clear them is on plus and when I click on the plus sign, Im asked to pay (or sign up for it)

So I cant access them to correct them and clear them

What are the features you're talking about?

drspouse · 21/07/2022 22:38

Oh I think those are your errors. Occasionally you can practice those but I never bother.
On the app you can only make 5 errors per lesson. On the desktop you can make as many as you like.

Yes I want to get rid of them by clearing them, it let me do this recently by giving me access to plus for some reason.

What did you mean by free lives, are these different

So if you use the app what happens if you make more than 5 errors in one lesson?

drspouse · 22/07/2022 07:24

You have to restart the lesson.

HandShoe · 22/07/2022 14:04

If you want a good set of Duolingo weird phrases try searching 'duolingo weird sentences' on YouTube - the results have been entertaining us, and there are quite a few that come up that I've seen myself.

My Duolingo gave me 'Why is your Apple Strudel so salty?' Which I have to say felt like a particularly rude insult, which ever way you choose to interpret it.
