I went to bed at 3pm yesterday afternoon for a "nap" after coming home from work unwell, really feeling dreadful.

I've just woken up! We're supposed to phone in by 7:30. I'll have to call an apologise, but it's occurred to me that actually, if you live alone (so no one to wake you) this would be common, if you are indeed quite ill?

I've only recently lived alone after 3 decades of a DH and DC in the house, so little chance of sleeping in no matter how ill you are.

Just ring in ASAP, not a lot else you can do really. Hope you feel better soon.

Badger1970 · 22/06/2022 09:19

I'm pretty sure it's fairly common when you're poorly and live alone.

I tend to check on people though if it's out of character for them.

Bettyboop3 · 22/06/2022 09:58

I think the majority of people living alone would rely on an alarm to wake them

MaChienEstUnDick · 22/06/2022 10:00

My work would have been phoning you since 9am but that would be out of concern for you. We're very hot on safeguarding our people!

However if you were sent home sick yesterday your boss is probably anticipating you were sick again today. Hope you feel better soon.

Why you are on here and not the phone to your employer?

get well soon.

Geordielass1987 · 22/06/2022 10:04

I had the flu years ago and went home from work poorly, didn’t feel on this planet for about 3 days didn’t ring in sick for work for the whole 3 days had no recollection of going to the toilet or speaking to anyone at all. My phone was full of calls and texts and emails and I’d just been in bed sweating for days, Always have the flu jab now.

This really. If you were already late ringing, why would you take time out to write about it on MN to make it even later to ring them?

LetitiaLeghorn · 22/06/2022 10:08

Should also have said.... Adding my best wishes. I've just got over a cold or something that completely knocked me off my feet so you have my sympathies. It took me quite a while to feel better, too. Take it easy.

woodencoffetable · 22/06/2022 10:09

Well there isn't "no one to wake you" when you live alone. there is the trusty alarm clock or phone alarm.

woodencoffetable · 22/06/2022 10:09

Get a cat, they will wake you.

It isn't difficult to work out that op just needed to reach out to impartial people when she is feeling unwell and alone.

Yes, which is set religiously under normal circumstances. Crawling into bed barely aware of my own name wasn't one of them.

I've lived alone for a few years and mostly I'd set an alarm and would not expect to sleep straight from 3pm to 9pm the next day. I think that level of sleep is the unsual part, even when ill - so perhaps not as many people do this as for it to be common.

That said, if this was unusual behaviour for me, I'd expect my employer to understand and cut me some slack so I hope yours has too, OP. Especially after leaving work yesterday unwell.

Get better soon.

OldTinHat · 22/06/2022 10:21

Feel better very soon OP Flowers

RagingWoke · 22/06/2022 10:26

I'd be concerned that no one tried to call you to check you were ok after you didn't contact them (and would have presumably been late for work if you were going in?).
Good opportunity to raise it with your employer and suggest a process for checking in for people who live alone. I know of a few business that do this kind of thing as standard as it's not unusual for someone to live alone and not have daily contact with other people outside of work.

Hope you're feeling better soon op.

Hallyup89 · 22/06/2022 10:26

Can't be that ill if your first thought is to post on Mumsnet, rather than phoning your work.

Lovely bedside manner 🥰

Poppins2016 · 22/06/2022 10:30

How you feel better soon, OP. You obviously needed the rest!

Was your employer understanding?

I've had to make a few "just checking you're OK as you haven't turned up for work" calls over the years and have been understanding with the exception of one person who had a long term pattern of shirking responsibility in all areas of work, never mind the responsibility to turn up... their eventual undoing was saying that they had been at work one morning when they clearly hadn't (witnessed, but the words "why do you think I'm not in" were uttered) and had just 'popped out of the office' which was why we couldn't find them... it amazes me what certain people think they can get away with! However, your scenario wouldn't ring alarm bells, I'd just want to make sure you were resting and getting medical attention if needed.

Seraphinesupport · 22/06/2022 10:31

@Hallyup89 ~Literally says they have already called boss. she hasnt JUST woken up.

MoodyTwo · 22/06/2022 10:31

Did work ring you to make sure you were ok?
I really worry about people who live on their own and if they are not logged on by 5 mins after start time I'm rimming them to make sure they are ok

I have explained to everyone I work with that when I lived on my own I was terrified of falling in the shower and no body noticing and my cats eating my face... they appreciate it's from caring about them and not being an busy body time control boss
