Now that I’m in my 40s, why does ONE glass of wine make me feel shit?!

I was never one of those people who didn’t get hangovers. But I used to be able to have a few glasses of wine and feel completely fine the next day (more than 2 and hello hangover though!).

Now I can’t even have ONE with food without feeling shit! Headache the next day, feeling slightly sad, puffy, etc.

Why?! Is it that I’m out of practice? Is it my metabolism? Is it the universe telling me to quit?!

LADIES!!!
Please note.. if you drink Italian wine, check it is DOCG.. usually on a collar round the neck.
If French wine... Bio symbol is a little green leaf somewhere on the label.
These wines have no added commercial sulphites which is what causes the problems.
ALL wine contains sulphites, they are found naturally, but big producers add them to speed up/enhance the processes.
Organic or biodynamic wines are all safe.
Cheers!!!

DOCG has nothing to do with organic, or sulphites or anything else.

Stop talking about things you don't understand

It's not just wine that causes me problems, it is pretty much all alcohol. My GP said the only reason I can tolerate gin in small quantities is because of the quinine in the tonic I drink with it.

TryThisItHelps · 22/06/2022 19:04

Alcohol is a toxin, your body is older and less able to deal with loading up with toxins. Pretty straight forward.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/06/2022 19:42

I can drink half a bottle of red or white and I'm fine - even at 60 - and so most Fridays and Saturdays -

However Prosecco makes me feel like shit and any 'brown' spirits give me instant hiccups after 1 sip

SummerPuddings · 22/06/2022 21:02

Gin is better.

spanishsummers · 22/06/2022 22:52

I can't either. Also even a glass and my sleep pattern is ruined.

spanishsummers · 22/06/2022 22:53

That says, have you seen what counts as a glass now? One mini bottle and I'm out.

Summerwhereareyou · 22/06/2022 23:15

Zero alcohol tankery gin is amazing.

It's fhd absolutely best fake drink Ive tried! Expensive but worth it.
Nosecco Is good as well to head off a prosecco surge.

I wish there were as good white/red wines but I've never Found a good substitute.

mrssojojo · 23/06/2022 14:09

Have you ever tried that clean wine? My friend has tried it and said it worked really well for her when she couldn't drink much without a shocking hangover the day after... Never tried it myself but it seems like it has alot of good reviews? I think it's just a spray that goes into wine and shouldn't do anything to taste (fingers crossed). This is the website rersgroup.co.uk/product/clean-wine-1-to-10-bottles

Anyone find wine upsets their stomach? Just wondered if its worth trying sulphite free wine or something...

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 23/06/2022 14:56

I’ve found the opposite. I stopped drinking in my early 30s because it messed me up so much.

Went on a post-Covid girly weekend at the end of last year and drank 2 bottles of fizz one evening (each) and none of us had hangovers the next day. 🤷🏻‍♀️

OompaLoompaa · 23/06/2022 15:53

I am ok with a glass of sparkling wine or better still with some orange juice added, I also enjoy a passion fruit martini. I am rubbish with non sparkling wine.

CounsellorTroi · 23/06/2022 16:01

Wine is getting stronger all the time. It’s rare to find a red less than 13% and most of them are 14 or 14.5%. I don’t like feeling like I’ve had several glasses when I’ve only had one.

Elvira2000 · 23/06/2022 16:19

I'll try that spray thing! God I'll try anything. I love a couple of glasses of wine in the sunshine. (And in the cosy warmth in the winter.)

I am 47 and have been taking milk thistle. I found (or maybe imagined) that it helps. Also lots of exercise.

I don't drink to excess (now!), but is it too much to ask to be able to enjoy a couple of glasses every now and again and feel normal the next day?

CherryRipe1 · 23/06/2022 17:41

Same. Post meni but one glass triggers hot flushes & feeling terrible unless I drink it very slowly with a meal. Fizzy stuff weirdly doesn't affect me. I've been told that wine is getting stronger due to global warming affecting the grapes & the sulfites causing adverse effects on our bodies. Might try organic wine and see if that is better.

Hedonism · 23/06/2022 17:57

Oh what? This is a very depressing read (43) 😭

I've really been going off wine lately. White wine in particular is an instant headache.
