Now that I’m in my 40s, why does ONE glass of wine make me feel shit?!

Windowseat77 · 22/06/2022 05:23

I was never one of those people who didn’t get hangovers. But I used to be able to have a few glasses of wine and feel completely fine the next day (more than 2 and hello hangover though!).

Now I can’t even have ONE with food without feeling shit! Headache the next day, feeling slightly sad, puffy, etc.

Why?! Is it that I’m out of practice? Is it my metabolism? Is it the universe telling me to quit?!

Same, i could drink wine after dinner, but if i were crazy enough to have a glass before or with dinner id pay for it.

Im 52 and noticed this at about 48.

My only symptom though so can't complain.

WhatALoadOfWankiness · 22/06/2022 08:07

I'm the same
It's shit

MintyGreenDreams · 22/06/2022 08:08

Sparking wine suits me better nowadays.A half bottle once a week early evening, finished by 9pm and I'm fine.
I've always been a Sauvingon Blanc girl but now it fucks me up.
I'm 42.

DrRuthGalloway · 22/06/2022 08:11

Prosecco is shit, avoid it.

I find French wines are much much better. I tend to go for lower alcohol content - 11 percent.
If I drink Californian, Australian or New Zealand wine I feel awful. Prosecco gives me an instant headache. French white I can drink about 3 glasses and be fine.

lollipoprainbow · 22/06/2022 08:12

Same, I'm nearly 48 and exhausted after just one glass of wine now.

HeidiWhole · 22/06/2022 08:13

Same for me - white wine was my drink of choice but I can no longer tolerate even the smallest amount. I switched to red and it's fine. Or gin. Gin is good as long as it's just one or two maximum.

Bonbon21 · 22/06/2022 08:17

LADIES!!!
Please note.. if you drink Italian wine, check it is DOCG.. usually on a collar round the neck.
If French wine... Bio symbol is a little green leaf somewhere on the label.
These wines have no added commercial sulphites which is what causes the problems.
ALL wine contains sulphites, they are found naturally, but big producers add them to speed up/enhance the processes.
Organic or biodynamic wines are all safe.
Cheers!!!

Chewbecca · 22/06/2022 08:31

Actually I have experimented with organic / bio wines, and suphite free vs contains sulphites. It made jack all difference to the effect on my sleep / hangover.

It’s sadly a really common thing in women starting in their mid / late 40s. I love wine and the social feeling it brings but am much more selective on frequency now.

BloodyHellKen · 22/06/2022 09:22

Same here OP. I really don't think it's peri-menopause thing as previous posters have said - not in my case anyway. I think it's an additives in wine thing.

It's not all alcohol that makes me unwell, just red, white and rose wine. Spirits, beer and sparking wine I'm fine with.

I do think that as we get older our bodies can't metabolise alcohol (as well as other things) as well though and that's not necessarily to do with being female, it's just a sign of aging.

SaintVal · 22/06/2022 09:30

I always used to drink white wine and soda and was fine on it but then I'd start feeling pissed after one glass, get memory blanks and the worst headache the next day. I haven't touched wine now for a year and I'm convinced it's all to do with peri-menopause. I drink single gin and slimline tonics now and I pour all the tonic in!

Pennyhill22 · 22/06/2022 09:37

Could have posted this myself. Over the last year the hangovers have just got worse. Up until then I never suffered and would be up early and go about my day. I only drink light beer,no wine, spirits ever. Now if I drink on a Sunday its Wednesday before I've got my energy back.

fossilsmorefossils · 22/06/2022 11:15

On the plus side, not drinking is great for the skin and saves calories.

Desmondo2021 · 22/06/2022 11:29

Omg I've found my people. Sadly the 'getting old and can't drink wine anymore' bunch 🤣

You could all be me, although I do find day drinking to be a solution🤣 drank the best part of a bottle of wine between 2 and 7 on Sunday at a family party and was absolutley fine. Maybe I need to remember the brand and only drink that!

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 22/06/2022 11:34

I've given up drinking at 44 as it makes me feel hideous.
Tired, nauseous, really down for 2-3 days even after 1 drink.
It's just not worth it anymore.
I've never really liked soft drinks either so I mainly drink water.
So rock n roll!

Echobelly · 22/06/2022 13:44

I'm still OK on not more than 2 or 3 units, but I definitely can't do a big session without suffering. So it's just as well I've never been a big drinker anyway.

BusyEvenForBee · 22/06/2022 13:53

I am in the same boat, two glasses of red max and hangover after. But found a way. Discovered Clean Wine spray and it works!!!

rersgroup.co.uk/cleanwine

You can buy it on Amazon. Just need to remember not to top up the glass. Finish the wine, spray and top up. I use it all the time now.

Sammysquiz · 22/06/2022 14:38

That looks interesting @BusyEvenForBee , though feel a bit nervous about the fact that the main ingredient is something they’ve trademarked themselves, so difficult to ascertain what’s actually in it?

motogirl · 22/06/2022 14:45

I can drink alcohol but caffeine is another matter, a cup of tea at midday means no sleep that night. I drink redbush tea now which is caffeine free and restrict coffee to occasionally on weekends before 10am

stayathomer · 22/06/2022 14:50

I honestly think about this age your body just starts rejecting almost everything!! I am going for a scope soon in relation to issues that seem to be sugar and wheat related and mentioned it to my friends and all of them had/currently have so many stomach issues!!(we’re 40-42)

Joystir59 · 22/06/2022 06:16

You are approaching the menopause and it's common to feel a need to stop drinking alcohol or caffeinated drinks as these things stop agreeing with you. Luckily I'm happy to report that I'm in my sixties and once again happily enjoying my morning coffee again and a drop of wine now and then.

It’s good to hear there might be a time when I can have a relaxing glass of wine every now and again!

I'm 32 and this happened to me after being on a lot of meds. I've stopped bothering now. I'm about 8 months in and I don't miss it anymore

WimpoleHat · 22/06/2022 17:22

I’ve found my people too! Nobody else seems to have this problem; I love wine but I really suffer for it if I have more than a glass or two….

gingersplodgecat · 22/06/2022 17:23

This happened to me too, at around the same age. Even a couple of mouthfuls makes me feel dreadful within a couple of minutes.

The only thing I can drink now is a very occasional G&T.

Windowseat77 · 22/06/2022 17:27

Intrigued by the clean wine spray!

And yes it could be peri menopause for me. I’m 42 and have no idea! But I’m at the age!

Also interesting about the additives in wine thing - I am much more sensitive to eating junk food than ever too. If I eat something really unhealthy, I can feel it - foggy brain, a bit puffy faced - in a way that I absolutely could not when I was younger. I’m not a health nut, but that’s also something I’ve noticed too…

I am going to experiment with sticking to another drink or even natural wine!

But I’m glad I’m not alone!
