The dreaded evening urge to nibble. What are your ideas for low cal. snacks?

You know when you just want to EAT SOMETHING in the evening, but are trying to cut back on calories? If i just ignore the urge I often end up pigging on a pile of buttered toast at about 9pm 😣🙄

Better to be prepared! My ideas are:

Frozen grapes
Ice pops
Bowl of rice crispies

but i'm getting bored with them and too many frozen grapes give me the sh*ts. What do you have on standby?

@queenrollo that's good advice. And it's true that eating the wrong thing can bring on the hearburn here too lately.

If you're up at 5am, then you must be practically on your way to bed at 9pm.

How about a mug of Horlicks about 8pm? (don't laugh!) it works for me, and I make it with 3/4 hot water and 1/4 semi skimmed milk. Don't bother with the 'light' version of Horlicks though, it's horrid.

😂 yes we are. It's matchsticks under eyelids to watch The Sopranos (i know, we're the last people in the world who haven't seen it) until 10pm.

I love a hot choc.
If i were having it as a 'snack' i'd do a whole mug of milk warmed in micro with choc powder.
Never tried Horlicks. It always sounds lovely!

Packet of baby spinach or chopped iceberg lettuce eaten from the bag like crisps if feeling picky but lazy. If you fancy something along the same lines but including a bit of chopping, you could make this up in advance - the idea is that you pile a mix of bits onto a spinach leaf and roll it up into a cone and eat it. I make jaggery syrup and pour a tiny bit in, which makes it all taste fantastic but is of course pure sugar so that's up to you. Chop everything tiny:

  • lemon complete with peel
  • red chilli
  • dry roasted peanuts
  • lemongrass
  • raw garlic
  • dessicated coconut
It's all so pungent and fresh tasting that it satisfies you without being too fattening (except if, like me, you can't stop eating it and pour too much sugar on).

@Thehistorygirls - I only eat in an 8-hour window and have lunch at 1pm, dinner around 7pm and then a snack in front of the telly just before 9pm. This works for me

Yes, for those who don't want breakfast that's a good plan. I just don't fancy food at all till 10/11am either.

Cucumber and salad cream sounds nice.

DD3 makes her own popcorn. Always smells divine. I'll have to prod her into making a batch again soon.

I'm happy with my weight now, ever since I ditched the carbs and did more walking (dropped almost 2 stones / 26lbs)

I'll still snack at night but it might be an apple or a bit of fruit, or a carrot. Sometimes even a bowl of low fat greek yougurt. None of which are hugely calorific.

Dump the carbs! I'd previously piled on the pounds eating toast. I don't even buy bread now.

Laiste · 21/06/2022 18:06

@Justrealised can i just come and live with you? 😂

Gosh that sounds amazing! Thank you. I have the same probs with gradually upping the less healthy bits of things. The apple with a bit of peanut butter becomes mostly peanut butter with a bit of apple for example ...

What about roasted chickpeas?

Laiste · 21/06/2022 18:23

@Charlize43 10 years ago i could have/would have written your post.

I ditched all carbs and lost 3 stone in a stupidly quick time (3 months iirc?) and felt amazing. I love bread and all things carby but they make me feel sluggish and bloated. When i'm calorie counting i try also to avoid wheat.

When i was hard core low carbing (on a tight budget) i found it almost impossible to snack in the evening because the only things in the fridge that i was allowed was value ham, cheap cheese and marg.. OK for the first evening or two - mouth full of ham and cheese, but when the novelty wore off i was left with nothing. Probably why i lost so much weight 😂

I just couldn't low carb right now. It's all about mindset. I would recommend it though!

Very crunchy iceberg lettuce tossed in lime juice, a pinch of salt, and a teaspoon of chilli flakes.

They are a super food i think!

My challenge would be not to eat the whole packet!

I actually given up eating any evening snack, and guess what, feels so good in the morning.
I always thought a bit of something is ok, but I really wanted to shift a bit of weight, and I can feel I'm loosing it already after a week. When I'm a bit peckish, I drink green tea, it wasn't as hard as I thought.
