King bed for nearly 3 year old?

Any cons? We’ve changed our bed and now we have a spare king size.. we was going to get her a double but since we already have the king we thought we may just keep it for her?

it takes up a large space in her room.. but her room consists of her bed, a bedside table and a reading corner.. she doesn’t need play space because I keep her bedroom and play space separate for easier and more relaxed bedtimes, all her toys, soft play ect are in the play room - so space isn’t an issue really.

are there any other cons to her having a much bigger bed? Whenever I used to leave her sleeping in it she’s look like a little ladybug, so tiny in a huge space 🙈

as children get older they like to spend more time in their room and have toys that aren’t “shared” with siblings or visitors. They also like to have friends to sleepover. On the whole a small bed and more space to play would be my choice.

Sounds v luxurious!

One thought though...when it comes to learning to make her own bed, going to be much, much harder if it's a king size. I mean a lot of adults struggle with king size duvets!

In the interests of promoting independence, I'd opt for a single tbh and sell the king size.

Will your DD expect/want child-themed duvet covers, eg cartoon characters, superheroes etc? They might be hard to find in king size so your DD might have to put up with grown-up themed bedding.

If she's used to a king, will she sleep in a single on holiday or visiting friends and family?

ohmygloshes · 21/06/2022 04:17

My three year old has just moved into a double bed. He loves his toys in it and the fact me and my husband can fit on for bed time stories. My daughter had the same when she was five and when she was a bit older she used to have sleep overs with the girls all in a row in the same bed. They also used to play games on top of the bed as well as on the floor. It works for us.

MinnieMountain · 21/06/2022 05:46

I agree that space could be an issue as she gets older.

Our 8yo has a double (it was also our spare bed) but we’ve got a spare bedroom and have just moved him into the bigger room as he’s spending more time in his room.

ChocolateHippo · 21/06/2022 06:07

Good idea. Much more comfortable for cuddling her to sleep when she wants someone to stay with her. And she's less likely to fall out.

sazzt · 21/06/2022 06:07

Changing the bed in the event of accidents, sickness etc. that would be a lot of big bedding to wash/dry.

Simonjt · 21/06/2022 06:11

My seven year old has a double bed, its fine, children having sma single beds is very much a british thing.

Redcrayons · 21/06/2022 06:17

When she’s older she’ll probably need more furniture like a proper size wardrobe, drawers, desk for homework. You’ll be downgrading her to fit it all in.

TheTeenageYears · 21/06/2022 06:37
  • Changing a king size is more effort
  • more washing for a king size
  • lack of child bedding
  • mattress suitability, this goes for any size bed. A small child needs a much softer mattress than an adult so make sure it's appropriate
  • lack of bedroom space
  • cost of bedding is higher the bigger you go
Lacdepassy · 21/06/2022 06:54

It's fine for now, you don't want to throw out a perfectly good bed and then buy another. She will want her room redecorated in a few years so update things then.

All mine went into double beds. It's great for when they are feeling unwell/scared as you can just jump in with them. It's also perfect if they have a friend to sleep over as they can just jump into the same bed.

KangarooKenny · 21/06/2022 06:55

It’s fine, don’t throw out a perfectly good bed.

JenniferBarkley · 21/06/2022 07:06

I think it's a great idea if you have the space as it gives much more flexibility - you can bunk in when they're ill, potentially gives you another guest bed if there's somewhere she can sleep on a camp bed or something.

But only if you have the space. She'll need a desk before you know it and possibly more clothes storage when she's older. And unless she's an only child, private space for playing.

fromcitytocountry · 21/06/2022 07:07

My 3 year old has a double bed. He loves it and sleeps very well in it.

We just have neutral bedding for it and double up layers with a sheet then waterproof, sheet then waterproof, so if he ever is poorly we can very quickly strip the bed. I also keep a spare duvet and pillow set made up for this eventuality too.

carefullycourageous · 21/06/2022 07:11

I think it is better to have a single as IMO people who sleep like starfishes are a proper pain to share with. Sleeping in a single must surely help you learn to be aware of the edges, not flap around, keep limbs in, not fall out?

A single, to me, just seems the appropriate size for a child. The floor space is also of more value than the bed space even if currently unused.

I'd sell the king.

mizzo · 21/06/2022 07:14

Mine all have doubles.
It's great mostly, plenty of room for cuddles, extra space for guests, loads of places do character bedding in double size now, my youngest does seem to complain of the cold in winter far more than he ever did in a single. I suppose it's a big space for a little body to warm.

hoohaaar · 21/06/2022 07:15

My 2 year old is in a double bed.

I think it's really helpful for when they call you in to bed in the middle of the night. You can actually sleep rather than attempting to sleep on your side all uncomfortable.

Also handy for when friends stay over or if she has any siblings who might want to share the bed.

I say go for it!
Can always downsize in the future if it's an issue.

Lazypuppy · 21/06/2022 07:22

I would put the king bed in the loft, or sell, and get a single. As others hqve said she can have kids bedding, and easierfor her to learn how to make it etc, and more space will be needed as she gets older.

carefullycourageous · 21/06/2022 07:24

I think there are going to be a lot of unhappy married people in thirty years' time!

I learnt to lie still when I had a 2'6" bed, if you wriggled you fell out Grin

SW1amp · 21/06/2022 07:26

My then-3 year old had a king size bed when we got a new bed

He happily sleeps in a single at GPs house or on holiday, but it’s been really useful to have him in the big bed at home

as others have said, one of us can sleep comfortably in his bed when he needs some company, we’ve used it as an extra guest bed, as the underbed
storage has been really useful

We got bedding from John Lewis in king size which he is more than happy to with

CredibilityProblem · 21/06/2022 08:16

Just because you have a king size bed doesn't mean you need a king size duvet. My teen has a small double, but still kept her single duvet and all the child-friendly covers that went with it.

PonyPals · 21/06/2022 10:12

Keep the bed. My then 3 year old loved it and still does as a 7 year old. And we also love it as plenty of space to play on it.
Best decision was to keep the king size bed.
We only have a double duvet as easier right but kids bedding.

WimpoleHat · 21/06/2022 10:15

My kids have doubles - the extra space is nice and they like to bunk in together. I wouldn’t buy a king size out of choice for a child that age, but if you have one, then why chuck it out? Only downside is that you definitely won’t get kiddie themed bedding, but there’s plenty of choice otherwise.

Ilovechoc12 · 21/06/2022 10:23

My daughter had a super king sized bed age 2-6 (it was the guest room). She sleeps like a star fish. Then she wanted to share a room with her sister (single bed) she’s 7 now and falls out of the single bed twice a night.

im not sure if that’s something to do with having a super king sized bed for 4 years but always falls out of bed of a single (nearly every night) ….. even on holiday!

I think they get used to the large bed ….
