Teen wants to travel Europe and get bar work

Does anyone have any experience of this.

Any advice, top tips, pitfalls and things to think about?

Sounds like a great summer ahead - wish I'd done it. Just want to make sure we've covered all bases and guided our teen appropriately and safely.

Thanks.

Do they have EU nationality? Because otherwise it's not that simple anymore-

Fitterbyfifty · 20/06/2022 21:33

I take it they have EU passports?

daisypond · 20/06/2022 21:33

Yes, they need an EU passport.

bellac11 · 20/06/2022 21:33

I think its all visas now to work. Unless its cash in hand which would be tricky

SharpLily · 20/06/2022 21:34

Good luck with that! Brexit has made it very, very difficult. While some bars will still hire people without the correct paperwork, they are not the sort of places you want your kids to be. Anywhere decent now has to prove the job can't be filled by an EU citizen (practically impossible in bar/tourism work), with the associated hassle and cost, to sponsor them with a working visa.

Figgygal · 20/06/2022 21:34

Er brexit means they cant do that anymore surely?

OneCup · 20/06/2022 21:41

Camp America then travel round US?

Danni677 · 20/06/2022 21:49

You can still interrail but not work unfortunately. Could they do a month’s bar work in the UK and use that to fund a non-working trip?

Crikeyalmighty · 20/06/2022 21:58

As someone said to me when we were living in Denmark- how come their are still
Lots of US, Canadians and Aussies working there? Some are students there but many are on working holidays because those countries are on the 'preferential' list- the UK is not- because we haven't offered reciprocal. That's why when the leave campaign were putting complete lies about 'you will all still be able to live and work in Europe' anyone with a brain knew it was never going to work like that unless you were already living there , were fully registered or have a highly skilled specialist job that the country really needs

Ahhh - phew, no they don't thank goodness

Time for a rethink for something a bit more sensible

Thanks Mumsnet !

Norway, especially Oslo, is really in need of bar staff now, especially if they’ve got some experience.

it is possible to get a seasonal work visa, but probably too late to sort for this summer. So would need an EU passport, yes.

Finding accommodation will be hard, but maybe some employers are willing to help.

Thunderpunt · 20/06/2022 22:13

Holiday rep for something like Tui?

I did it for Thomson some 27 years ago.... best time of my life!

MovinOnUp · 20/06/2022 22:19

Bar work on a cruise ship perhaps?
Not sure how much of the world you'd get to see right enough.

SirenSays · 20/06/2022 22:21

What about a working holiday visa in Australia, New Zealand or Canada?

WeAreBob · 20/06/2022 22:21

Have you not heard of Brexit?

Escarpahell · 20/06/2022 22:23

They could volunteer in exchange for food and accommodation using Workaway, HelpX or Woofing. As long as they don't go over the 90 days they'll be OK.

What's not sensible about going to Europe and getting a summer bar job?
This is what thousands of young Brits have done for decades.
Unfortunately, thanks to Brexit and the gullible fools who voted for it, it probably won't be possible for your kid.

DPotter · 20/06/2022 22:31

They probably have left it too late to apply to Mark Warner etc for beach and bar work at their places. But maybe next year

HollowTalk · 20/06/2022 22:38

It'll be too late for the summer but maybe for next, they couldn't have a look at Eurocamp. My daughter worked there and had a great time.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/06/2022 23:59

Hello. ........ as mentioned above , some of these options mentioned are simply not going to be there if don't have an EU passport. The EU have rules about working and residing and it's not just about not being there more than 90 days, you literally cannot actually work without a visa if non EU and that usually requires sponsorship and is only offered usually if they cannot fill roles with EU candidates-

Can't do it in Europe anymore. Can do it in Canada, NZ or Australia though.

Its relatively easy to get the visa to do. Loads of others do the same.

Would recommend it.

LilyPond2 · 21/06/2022 00:22

Anyone else find it rather odd that the OP's first post is really enthusiastic about her DD getting bar work in Europe, but on learning that it's no longer possible due to Brexit she then claims to be relieved her DD won't be able to do this. Perhaps (yet another) Leave voter who didn't know what she was voting for?

maddy68 · 21/06/2022 00:48

Unfortunately brexit has put paid to all of this. I'm still angry

Surely noone ever wished to restrict our own freedoms?

I'm very lucky myself and my own children got out before the shit storm abd can enjoy those freedoms.

IVFPrayingForBioChild · 21/06/2022 00:51

My early-20's niece went to Iceland, Luxembourg and a couple of other places in her 90 days via wwoof.org.uk
