Online fabric…where do you get yours?

I’ve dragged the sewing machine out and I have loads of patterns to use! The nearest decent fabric shop to me is about an hours drive away, so not a quick trip. I’d really like to start buying online, but there’s so many retailers, I’m a bit lost! If anyone had any recommendations of places they order clothing fabric from (and aren’t disappointed by!) I’d love to hear them please!

Thanks in advance! 😊

Terry's Fabric is fab: huge range, reasonably priced, free samples, and always happy to give advice.

Stitch fabrics, and Stone fabrics in Totnes, if you send an SAE to Stone they will send samples.

Thank you both ☺️

Minerva fabric have pretty everything you could need. Not the easiest to navigate site always but huge range and good prices

colderandeatsmincepiesalot · 20/06/2022 11:54

Definitely try Minerva www.minerva.com/mp?type=Fabrics&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlK_Jpe67-AIVROvtCh1xEw1WEAAYASAAEgIFq_D_BwE They also have peoples makes on there, so if you choose a fabric, scroll down and you can see some amazing creations! Also you can do the same with patterns, so say you have McCalls 7116, click on that and scroll down so you can see others creations and fabric choices. Huge site and everything for the home sewist! As you can tell, I am a convert!!

Have a look at Dalston Mill, I've found some amazing quirky designs on there (they also do all the normal stuff if quirky isn't your thing.)
Minerva are also good

If you fancy something fun then I’d recommend www.sewanonymous.co.uk

Liberty when I've got money or doing a special project, Pound Fabrics or a local market (increasingly hard to find, mind) when I'm practicing or skint.

SoMuchToBits · 20/06/2022 13:48

As others have said, Minerva. I have also used the following sites. Hobby Holidays, Myfabrics, Fabric Inspirations, Sew essential, Truro Fabrics and Textile Express.

Some of these are primarily aimed at patchwork/crafting projects, but you can still usually order fabric by the metre. I have made several summer skirts from fabric which is supposedly for patchwork/quilting!

Byebyecobwebs · 20/06/2022 14:04

I like Plushaddict, for patchwork by post Hometown in Rochester. Merchant and Mills for linen and heavy duty fabrics like denim’s. Dunelm, Aldi, and Lidl for cheapie fabrics for bags and fabric pots. Liberty of London for lovely lawn fabrics. Some of the patchwork fabric make lovely clothes. I am also a fan of Beth Studley fabrics (love from Beth).

driedgrassinavase · 20/06/2022 14:06

as a beginner I can’t afford expensive fabrics. I have got some lovely stuff from pound a metre (they do 3m for £3) pound fabrics, and Knighton Fabrics on Facebook. Knighton are especially good, my fabric arrived in 2 days and is lovely to sew with.

fatbottomgirl67 · 20/06/2022 14:09

Textile express is very good

Oooh, I can see my credit card getting a hammering!

Thank you all so much! 😁😁

Ah fabric people! I want to buy a tablecloth in a thick cotton, almost curtain strength. I'd love it in this season's orange/ terracotta but that all seems to be thin linen.

What would the thick cotton fabric be called? Any clues?

Cotton duck perhaps?

I think cotton canvas would be your best bet. Look for something above 300gsm in weight. You may be limited on colour choice but cotton dyes well in the machine. I think upholstery fabric may also fit the bill.

Hippee · 20/06/2022 20:10

Has anyone spotted any book themed cotton fabric on their travels?

NashvilleQueen · 20/06/2022 21:09

I live fumble for some quirky fabrics. Not cheap but good service and nice quality.

NashvilleQueen · 20/06/2022 21:10

Frumble! Not wearing my glasses

pastabest · 20/06/2022 21:13

What are you planning to make (just being nosey).

I have loads from minerva and Dalston Mills. I want to buy from textiles express as I follow them on Instagram and they look lovely.

I buy as much as I can from local fabric shops though.

Bluevelvetsofa · 20/06/2022 21:42

Have a look at The Eternal Maker too.

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 20/06/2022 21:44

@pastabest always nosey about peoples projects too!

I’m making some dresses and skirts. Going to try some tailored jackets too, and also want to try some quilting. But mostly stuff for me! I used study fashion and textiles many moons ago and used to make loads of my own clothes, including my wedding dress and six bridesmaids dresses! But then I gradually fell out of the habit, the sewing machine got packed away and it was all put on the back burner. I got diagnosed with breast cancer 8 months ago, and has to be off work for some months, so decided to reignite the flame! I’ve bought myself a snazzy new sewing table so I can whip out the machine whenever I want and I’m raring to go! ☺️
