Are motivational print walls a bit crap?

InspirationWall · 19/06/2022 16:58

I absolutely love the brightly coloured motivational prints on Etsy. All the different fonts and colours make me happy.

I work from home in my craft room. The walls are just white and I’ve decided I want to buy some prints - words that have meaning to me. Mostly ones that will give me a kick up the bum when I don’t have any orders, or to help me stick to my diet. Also song lyrics that I love. All in lovely colours and fonts.

I showed a friend and she said they’re crap, so I mentioned them to someone else who laughed and said the same. My mum says I’m too old (both my daughters have walls like this in their flats, but they’re 21 and 23). My husband says he likes them, and my daughters say to go for it. One has ordered me one ‘to get me started’

I don’t know why I care what people think really.

the pictures are the sort of thing, maybe!

I hate them but it’s not my room or walls, innit. You do you.

Please don’t get the third one, though, it’s got a typo: should be “every day” as two words.

Tallisimo · 19/06/2022 17:44

Your room, your space, your choice. Why do you care what anyone else thinks?

SpeedofaSloth · 19/06/2022 17:45

I don't have them and wouldn't buy them, but if they make you happy then put them up. Life's too short to agonise over this stuff IMO. If people judge, they didn't deserve to be in your home.

JaninaDuszejko · 19/06/2022 17:39

The only people who matter are those who live in your house. You think they are cheerful and they make you, your DH and DC happy. In addition they don't cost lots of money and are easy to remove if you get fed up of them. Win win.

@JaninaDuszejko

almost right, but in fact the ONLY person whose opinion matters is @InspirationWall as it's HER craft room & wirk sosve, not a communal area! It just happens her family think they're lovely too!

@InspirationWall

buy ones that 'speak' to you & change them as frequently as you wish! If YOU like them, in YOUR craft room/workspace, then anyone else can GTF!! I'm still at the bare plaster stage, but when I'm ready to add stuff I'll be putting what I like and not giving a shiney shit what other people IRL or the judgemental MNers deem acceptable!

JuneJubilee · 19/06/2022 17:54

@InspirationWall

if people laugh at me, I don’t care. I think they do anyway

I'm glad you're going to do it!

This is the first time you've had a room where you don't have to consider anyone else!!! Just gave exactly what you want, where you want if, how you want it, what colour you want it!

what size is the room?

what craft do you sell?

JuneJubilee · 19/06/2022 17:57

@InspirationWall

sorry, but what I had meant to say was, your comment is really sad and says much more about others than you.

It sounds like you weren't given much support, self confidence as a child and in relationships since.

I bet you're a great person who I'd live to be friends with IRL

🌸

Nature-Thrive · 19/06/2022 18:02

It's your space and you should decorate it however makes you happy. I have a farmhouse decor in my home with tobacco baskets, signs and antiques everywhere. Some people find that tacky but I love my home.

InspirationWall · 19/06/2022 19:07

@JuneJubilee
its 12’6 x 9’ It’s not massive but not a bad size. Ive got room for a long desk, an ikea kallax to store my stuff, and (I’m most excited about this) a packaging station with my boxes, tissue, cards and stickers.

I make felt things that I sell on Etsy. I used to do craft fairs too, but I’m just not confident enough!

@stuntbubbles I hadn’t noticed that!! It’s would really annoy me so I won’t be getting that. I’m not getting the happy place one either, but really like the writing and colours.

I really need one that says ‘put your phone down and do some work, you lazy cow’ but I don’t think it’s available

I wouldn't have them all over the house but in a craft room totally

tiredanddangerous · 19/06/2022 19:19

I don't like them but why do you care what anyone else thinks? Do what makes you happy.

Davros · 19/06/2022 19:44

Good for you, get them and enjoy them. I'd like a room where I can put lots of those album cover frames with my favourites in. I've got a couple and change them every now and then. I think I've got Never a Dull Moment by Rod Stewart and The Psychomodo by Cockney Rebel right now

iamamother · 19/06/2022 19:49

I love them

ApolloandDaphne · 19/06/2022 19:53

It is your room and you can hang whatever you want. I have a room in our home and I recently made bunting which I know is not to my DH's taste but he is more than happy for me to have it in my room as it makes me happy. Do what makes you happy. Life is too short not to.

mokololo · 19/06/2022 19:54

Lady Catherine will never know!

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 19/06/2022 19:57

My mum says I’m too old

Surely you're old enough then to know that what your mum thinks about how you decorate your room is irrelevant

Why does she think she gets a say? Is her attitude why you lack confidence on your choices?

Augend23 · 19/06/2022 20:01

I am not a massive fan of these but I really like the sarcastic vintage postcards and they won't be to everyone's taste either. I have two massive pin boards' worth of those plus stamp postcards and all sorts. I am sure plenty of people would hate them but I don't and it's my taste that matters in my study.

I have been debating getting a "die cry hate" one to go behind my head so it appears in all my work calls...but I fear it would be too childish.

doadeer · 19/06/2022 20:07

LaurieFairyCake · 19/06/2022 17:15

They're great for a creative or well-being space like a yoga or meditation space - affirmations are good for wellbeing, there's literally masses of research on this

Agree completely.

My mum bought me a print when I started my business, it was so lovely and thoughtful, every time I see it I feel a little boost and I have it in my son's room now, it makes me smile.

Words are really powerful for me

TenThousandSpoons · 19/06/2022 20:11

Go for it OP! Have YOUR room exactly how you want it! I’d intersperse the quotes with some lovely colourful art work too. 🌈

nokitchen · 19/06/2022 20:15

You have whatever makes you happy in your room. My room has photos of my horses and my collection of snow globes. They make me happy.

florianfortescue · 19/06/2022 20:15

I think the only thing that matters is that you love your space so I say go for it!

As an aside, the very chic interior designer Rita Konig has a print on her wall saying "DRINK MORE GIN" so she obviously thinks it's acceptable!

SailingNotSurfing · 19/06/2022 20:18

Decorate your room however you like, it's your own space.

SleepyMathematician · 19/06/2022 20:22

Honestly, go for it. Have the confidence to decorate exactly as you want. When I redecorated my kitchen I went for bright tiles in four colours, when everyone else was going for grey. I had a bit of judgement from a couple of white minimalist friends, but who cares, I wouldn’t go for their taste either. I like what I like and so what if anyone outside of this household doesn’t.
The best gift you can give yourself is to do things for you, how you want them, and not worry about whether it’s “tasteful” “classy” “tacky” or any other judgement we put upon ourselves. Ideas about those things change over time anyway.

Bagzzz · 19/06/2022 20:26

i don’t have any myself but not averse to some of them. You don’t need permission from anyone.

I need a “put away your phone” mug or mouse mat, but me being rebellious maybe “a few minutes online won’t hurt” would be more successful.

@InspirationWall that's a decent size!!

Felting is lovely. I bought some gorgeous little Christmas ornaments at the Copenhagen Christmas Markets (pre covid) . My friend felts & keeps threatening to teach me! (I'm only resisting because I have far too much stuff & craft stuff I should finish first!!)

I'm sad that your parents & other people have bashed your confidence so badly.

would you like to do craft fairs? Would your DD go with you?

How lovely to have a dedicated packaging spot!! 😊

have you painted the walls? What colour?

I really need one that says ‘put your phone down and do some work, you lazy cow’ but I don’t think it’s available

I'm sure you could get it customised if you can't find it! A fair few of us could use it I suspect!! 🤣
