Tragic question about washing line

Littlemisspiggy21 · 18/06/2022 23:03

Is there such a thing as a rotary clothes airer that you can (easily) remove from the ground and put away?

Just moved into a new house and there’s a hole for a rotary airer in the ground but I hate how they look. Surely there must be an option to remove it and put in the garage when you’re not using it?

On a side note, this is a worrying moment when I realised that I AM in fact my mother 😂

I've got a freestanding one but it's only small. It's more like a clothes horse size. They do exist though.

I know there's a hole already but I'd still just get a retractable line if I was you.

StopIWantToGetOffNow · 18/06/2022 23:06

My dad's one just lifts out the puts a cap over the hole. Think most do

Floydthebarber · 18/06/2022 23:09

Our previous neighbours always took theirs out and stored it in the garage until the next days washing was ready to hang out. We just have a cover for ours.

CatNamedEaster · 18/06/2022 23:09

In most cases you have a metal tube that is in the ground then the clothes line gets dropped into that. So yes you should be able to remove it when it's not in use.

bloodywhitecat · 18/06/2022 23:09

I thought you could just fold the arms away and lift them out of their hole to store in the shed/garage? I am sure that's what I used to do with mine when I had one.

DaysOfOurLives88 · 18/06/2022 23:10

We have a removable brabantia one outside. Just as you described.
Easy to remove when cutting the grass/putting paddling pool out. Etc

DDivaStar · 18/06/2022 23:10

We remove our rotary line regularly. We only have a small lawn so just put it out when we need it and put away when we don't. I thought everyone did 🤔

Yes just like this.

Littlemisspiggy21 · 18/06/2022 23:11

I just assumed the standard ones were really heavy and maybe you got lighter ones that were more portable to move from garden to garage…but maybe not!

ideally would like a retractable line or 2 but don’t have anywhere appropriate to hook it onto.

@DaysOfOurLives88 @DDivaStar any chance you can link to the ones you have?

The lighter ones in an easy to remove hole wouldn't stand up to a wash load of bedding in a stiff breeze. You can get covers for them that make them look less untidy.

ElenaSt · 18/06/2022 23:14

We just close ours down and put a Zip cover over it.

dementedpixie · 18/06/2022 23:17

Ours stays out year round. Don't have a cover for it. In the winter I fold it up but don't remove it. Dont think it can be removed

Wafflehouse · 18/06/2022 23:17

We got a ground spike and cemented it in the middle of the lawn. It has a cap that closes over when the line isn’t in and we put it in low enough so that we don’t have to mow around it, just go over the top and it’s not in the way.

I just put the line away in the shed when it’s not in use. The spike is a Minky one and has inserts so you can change the width to suit the pole.

This is ours.

Mthe · 18/06/2022 23:18

I remove mine everytime im not using due to high winds. Its just a standard one, its not too heavy to walk between a garage and the garden.

Dinoteeth · 18/06/2022 23:20

Ours is a brabantia one, with a ground spike. Yes they are fairly easy to remove.

I want to relocate ours and pull it out when not required or we have people round

Lindy2 · 18/06/2022 23:20

Most lift out of the hole if you really want to put it somewhere else when not in use.

Beware though, if the line hole is on grass, it can be ridiculously tricky to find the hole again once the pole is out. You need to put a stick or some kind of marker in it so you can locate it again - otherwise you'll potentially be searching for days. Trust me it's not a mistake anyone wants to repeat.

mumda · 18/06/2022 23:24

Yes that's how I mow the grass.

ExtremelyDedicated · 18/06/2022 23:26

Ours is a big 4-sided brabantia one (holds 3 machine loads easily) and just lifts out of it's hole which is one of those metal tubes in the grass. It's very light and easy to put up and down and lift out. We leave it up most of the time though as it is in almost daily use, just fold it if it's in the way.

ExtremelyDedicated · 18/06/2022 23:27

It also has a red plastic cap to put over the hole so you can find it again.

Courtjobby · 18/06/2022 23:28

We have the foldaway brabantia, it's v neat Brabantia - WallFix - amzn.eu/d/08rk6HR

Chazzagirl2 · 18/06/2022 23:31

If you have wall space outside, you can get a wall-mounted washing line. It pulls out like a standard rotary airer and has four sides, but collapses back down to the wall when not in use. I think Brabantia do them, and they’re not insanely expensive.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/06/2022 23:32

We have a wall fix one too, holds loads of washing,I love it!

Additionally... if that hole has any water in it, which it will, when you put the pole back in it'll shoot that water out at high pressure!
