WWYD - toddler has 40.3 temp

Posting here for traffic please be kind I’m so worried

2 year old has had high temp for two days, put some of it down to the heatwave but today it was still 39.6

called 111 had a doctors appointment this morning and they diagnosed tonsillitis and gave antibiotics

however even with continuing pain relief his temp is still on the up and is now at 40.3

he won’t eat (obviously the throat is sore) and is clearly very unwell, is lethargic and not himself

i’m back on the phone to 111 but I just feel like am I being OTT because he’s already been diagnosed

hes such a trooper usually (can genuinely be quite unweel and still be himself) but today he’s been so poorly

Am I being dramatic?

When did he last have calpol etc? How long has the temp been that high? Antibiotics won't have kicked in yet but if temp still that high with Calpol in the last hour I'd definitely be getting him seen personally. Wish him better soon

DoubleGauze · 18/06/2022 19:16

If meds don't bring his temp down you should go to a and e.

Good luck. I hope he feels better soon.

SnapDog · 18/06/2022 19:20

If you don’t get a quick response from 111 then I would take him to A and E.

You’ve already given him medicine and his temperature hasn’t come down.

One of mine was in hospital relatively frequently with infections as a baby and toddler and sometimes needed intravenous antibiotics. He was never allowed home if his temperature kept spiking and if I couldn’t keep it down when we went home then we’d have to go back in. I remember 39.5 as being the cut off point to be worried if I couldn’t get it down

My DD typically has a high temp when she’s poorly, she hit 41.9 at nursery last time, I didn’t believe them until I got her home and it was the same. Meds would always bring it down to about 40, and then once the infection/ virus was fought it would come down. This is typical for my DD, personally If it’s not for yours you won’t get criticised for presenting at A&E. I always say if something doesn’t feel right then it’s not

Squiff70 · 18/06/2022 19:20

Anything over 39 is high enough for a febrile convulsion.

I'm sure you've stripped him off to his nappy (or underwear). Do NOT emerse in cold or cool water. Offer lots to drink and keep on top of Calpol/Nurofen. He might like ice lollies to lick or suck too, to sooth his throat and keep up hydration.

You're absolutely doing the right thing seeking medical advice again. Little ones are very scary when they are unwell so don't think you're overreacting. Take him to A&E if you get more worried.

SnapDog · 18/06/2022 19:21

(And you’re not being dramatic, please don’t think you are as you can trust your own instinct on this 💐 )

carefullycourageous · 18/06/2022 19:22

You're not being dramatic Flowers

tocas · 18/06/2022 19:24

OP any health professional will tell you that they would rather see children "too often" than not often enough. I hope he feels better soon.

TiredInPerpetuity · 18/06/2022 19:24

Have you given ibuprofen or just calpol? My DS responds much better to ibuprofen and it brings his temp down much more effectively.

If you've tried both and not coming down, I'd go to A&E

user7637296 · 18/06/2022 19:24

Just go to A&E is you're really worried but it's not uncommon for small children to have high temps lasting 2-3days+

My DD1 had a consistently high temp of 30C+ for about 3 days last year, we continued to give nurofen and calpol interchanging every 2 hours.

Workinghardeveryday · 18/06/2022 19:24

my ds11 has a temp in of 43 a few months ago, it was blue lights to a&e. Paramedic said anything over 39 is urgent

user7637296 · 18/06/2022 19:25

39C!

HSKAT · 18/06/2022 19:26

It's going up with Calpol he needs seen ASAP.

I've always been told not to strip their clothes off, open a window to circulate air.

Gigi42p · 18/06/2022 19:33

Also vote take him straight to A&E

BattenburgDonkey · 18/06/2022 19:36

Go to a&e, not dramatic at all, I hope they’re on the mend quickly!

Mamapep · 18/06/2022 19:36

A&E, no question.

Nosleepingclub · 18/06/2022 19:36

@JustLikeJasper He had Calpol over an hour ago and it’s just not even touching the temp. It’s still 40.3

You need to go to A&E op

BertieBotts · 18/06/2022 19:39

He's only little, he needs seeing by a doctor. Hope it's not a long wait for you.

I should have said. He had three seizures today that was directly after his appointment (always the way) he was shaking non stop, I was trying to get his antibiotics and was in the pharmacy at the time crying my eyes out but they said it was normal for this happen with a high temp

Wow.

Get him to A&E now!

They should have told you this at the pharmacy

JustLikeJasper · 18/06/2022 19:42

@Nosleepingclub A&E now in that case. Hope he is ok x

Quornflakegirl · 18/06/2022 19:43

I personally wouldn’t go through the trauma that is A&E. Dd was diagnosed with tonsillitis by GP after having a high fever for 4 days, she was being sick too and each time I gave antibiotics she was being sick an hour later and it was all coming up. Called GP who told me to go to A&E as there was nothing they could do. Spent 4 hours waiting too be seen in the hot soup carnage that was A&E yesterday, I was sat on tiny child’s chair, dd was sleeping on my lap and next to us was a puddle of sick (from another child) that no one bothered to clear up despite a dozen hospital workers walking past constantly (it literally had to be stepped over!) After that ordeal we were told “Don’t worry, we don’t give
antibiotics for tonsillitis and she has to ride it out” and we were sent on our way. Day 5 and she still has a high fever.

Medical care is a circus.

BertieBotts · 18/06/2022 19:44

Seizures can be normal with a temperature but you should go to A&E if it's the first time it's happened, and they can support and advise you with what to do in future. That's horrifying. I'm sorry you were misadvised!

GiltEdges · 18/06/2022 19:44

Calpol does nothing for mine when he's poorly with a temp, including once when he had tonsillitis. Have you tried ibuprofen?
