Feeling really broken, emotionally and physically. On day 6 of non stop nausea and diarrhoea. GP thinks I’ve got a stomach virus or food poisoning. Started with one bout of vomiting and feeling under the weather for one day and for 5 days straight I’ve had diarrhoea everytime I drink or eat something. Called out of hours and they said wait until Monday to see GP or come down to a&e.
DH is in a right mood because I’m ill and he’s having to watch our 3 DC. I’ve become so weak and exhausted. Lost a stone in 5 days. I have no one who can tell me it will be ok or offer a shoulder to cry on. No one to even share what I’m going through. Never felt so alone and broken. My eldest who is 12 is the only one who seems worried. He’s getting me water soup etc DH is watching the younger 2 and acting like he’s not interested whether I’m still alive or not.
I’m now in a state thinking that this maybe something serious like bowel cancer or IBD. I am an Ibs sufferer, but I’ve never had diarrhoea in the past as I’m always constipated.
anyone had experience with food poisoning that has lasted this long?

Once when I had salmonella, yes. I was hospitalised. Did you call today?

catlovingdoctor · 18/06/2022 18:06

So sorry to hear you're so poorly, and well done for raising your eldest to be kind and concerned for you. Your DH should be completely ashamed of himself for not supporting you.

It's important to keep hydrated but also to replace lost salts and sugars so something like diarolyte will be good for that, although it tastes vile so maybe some lemonade.

You should try to eat a bit because if you don't it can actually worsen diarrhoea; there's nothing to bulk them out so bowel movements will be very runny as you're only having fluids. Something plain like crackers or dry toast in small , regular snacks would be a good start.

Sadly these nasty bugs just have to run their course, often it's a matter of waiting it out. If you are dehydrated to the point of fainting then you need urgent medical attention.

catlovingdoctor · 18/06/2022 18:07

And I've just gotten over a similar bug where I had bad diarrhoea for about a week but it turned a corner after that. You should hopefully be on the mend very soon.

Sorry to hear you are poorly. It's difficult to think rationally when you're unwell.
I suggest you try some dioralyte satchets to help with electrolyte & sugar losses.
Try and contact gp on Monday if you are not any worse or 111 if not improving over w/e.
Hth.

Is there any blood when you go to toilet?

Basilbrushgotfat · 18/06/2022 18:14

Great advice from catlovingdoctor.

As someone with severe IBD, I know how rotten you're feeling right now. Dehydration will make you feel so much worse.

They're not the best isotonic solutions out there but if you can't stomach rehydration salts (and please, if you haven't tried them yet - do!) then opt for a sports drink like Lucozade Sport.

When your salts get out of whack with the fluid intake, it makes dehydration worse.

If you start to experience cramping in your legs over the weekend (sign of low salts), I'd suggest heading to A&E for rehydration.

Keep sipping water, or crushed ice, or an ice lolly, but don't feel bad about going to A&E if you're not keeping your fluids up.

I have to say, I've never had vomiting as a result of IBd so I'm with your gp that a bug or food poisoning is most likely. You're panicking because you feel so ill, which is normal.

Also, dehydration makes nausea worse. If you can keep some liquid down it will make a difference.

I'm sorry your husband is being such a dick :(

P.s. This is not something to panic about, just would indicate you're not gaining control of your dehydration.

bloodyunicorns · 18/06/2022 18:18

I'm so sorry to hear that toe feeling so ill. Your dc is being lovely; your h us being a complete dick. How do you treat him when he's ill? Might be something to think about after you're better. You deserve better. Hope you feel well soon.

bloodyunicorns · 18/06/2022 18:19

You're, not toe 🙄

becausetrampslikeus · 18/06/2022 18:20

You mention trouble every time you eat or drink

Stop eating - give your insides a fighting chance

Water / dioralite little and often and only for At least 48hrs

Not to begin with, but now I’ve got piles due to going to the toilet 15-20 times a day. I know there’s piles there as I can feel them and they are very sore. I’ve had them before. Also the blood is bright red and not mixed in the poo, but separate at the end when I strain too much.

Can I ask what your symptoms are with IBD? Also, if you have a flare do you find you can’t tolerate even sips of water without it going straight through? And do you always get bloody BM.
The nausea I have is like bad morning sickness. The thought or smell or food is making me wretch.

I tried to not eat for 48 hours and just have sips of diarolyte, this made no difference still got diarrhoea on day 6

I had this after a trip abroad. Doctor told me not to eat anything for 24 hours to give my body a chance to fight the bug and just keep drinking.

Blusteryday101 · 18/06/2022 18:35

No advice but just posting to say you poor thing and your DH should be ashamed!

2boysand1princess · 18/06/2022 18:37

@catlovingdoctor i will try crackers. I haven’t really tried solid dry foods like that, so this makes a lot of sense. The only foods I’ve had in tiny amounts are soup and jelly.

Could you try a yakult or another probiotic?

StrawberryPot · 18/06/2022 18:41

Like Chewbecca I had similar symptoms when I had salmonella. Was ill in bed for a week before finally being admitted to hospital.

My dh is generally absolutely lovely but never shows much sympathy when I'm ill.

I think after 5-6 days you should ask your dr to do a stool sample (your dh can take it in for you!)
I do hope you turn a corner soon.

CrotchetyQuaver · 18/06/2022 18:41

I think I'd be phoning 111 and getting advice from them about what to do next.

Your husband is being horrible by the way

Without strong meds, I end up in hospital pretty quickly because I have it unusually badly. Loo over 30x per day, up to an hour at a time. Not always a bloody stool every time but usually and can be a lot of blood. Great deal of pain generally and with BMs. No appetite. Weakness and severe fatigue. Always extreme diarrhoea. Joint pain.

It's different from a stomach bug or food poisoning, when I've had those even sips of water will have me vomiting.

Honestly, op, please stop panicking. Your mind is only going to those places because you feel so terrible right now. And nausea will be helped if you can get some fluids inside you - you feel like it's the last thing you want to do but it can make you feel 10x better. Just stick to sips and if you can get diarolyte then please try it, it really does help. Your symptoms sound much more like a bug or food poisoning than my experience of IBD.

You need fluids, you'll feel so much better then.

My DH is an amazing father. He really is. He’s normally a good husband too. Taking time off work to watch the kids means he’s not getting paid as he’s self employed. I think he’s blaming me for his loss in income. Looks at me like I need to toughen up, but honestly I’ve never experienced pain like this before.

He is my world. I don’t think I can ever get over this. I feel so sad and upset at his behaviour towards me. It’s like he’s destroyed our 18 years of marriage for a weeks pay that he can actually make up during the school holidays. It’s a mess. His whole attitude towards me has changed so much with me being ill. In fact, recently he behaves in the same way whenever I’m poorly. I’ve just never been this ill before.

My husband had this sort of diarrhoea and nausea for over a week when he had campylobacter food poisoning. In the end he went to A&E and they prescribed antibiotics which resolved it.

bigbluebus · 18/06/2022 19:09

I had food poisoning/diarhea that lasted 3 1/2 weeks once. Thought I was going to die I felt so weak. DH had just started a new job which meant we were relocating but he was travelling daily at that point so I was on my own for 14 hours a day. Never felt so ill in my life.
Was given varying advice from GPs from don't eat anything at all to eat bland food if you feel like it. I lost 1 1/2 stone and was so grateful that our house move was delayed as they'd have had to put me in a lorry with a commode to get me there!
There was nothing I could do except wait for it to go by itself and even when the worst was over I still used to get stabbing pains in my stomach for a few months afterwards.

headstone · 18/06/2022 19:16

Have you tried Imodium? I went to work yesterday and the worst diarrhoea hit me . Had to go home it was so embarrassing 😳. I’ve dosed up on Imodium. I don’t feel great tbh but at least the toilet problems have stopped. For rehydration you can make your own cholera formula using stuff from the lurch cupboard.
