What would you say was the best British seaside town for a summer holiday?

So we've done Tenby & Whitby - loved both of them. Happy to go back to either again & had lots of recommendations from MNs but interested in other suggestions too as not that familiar with the UK coastline.

Hastings & Swanage & Budleigh Salterton I will investigate.

Southwold

Heard good stuff about here

Weymouth

Was thinking here as lots for the young dc.

I love st Ives but we never go to Cornwall in school holidays

I've only been to Cornwall once & would love to go back but I'm also scared of the summer crowds.

I'm in London but happy to travel as have a lot of holiday. Although Scotland may be too far what with the price of fuel!

Depends what you want out of your seaside holiday surely?

Nice beaches, good food, stuff for young dc & not too much driving to get to stuff once there

Bamburgh is on the list & heard positive stuff about Norfolk.

Is broadstairs still lovely? I used to go there every summer as a child and have very fond memories and very snobby parents so it can’t have been too bad! As an adult, I like Swanage a lot. Whitby and Scarborough also have their charm.

Yes it's still lovely
I loved it when mine were younger as there were no arcades or anything by the Beach itself . Another favourite is Joss Bay, with its cliffs and its rockpools .

Lovely beaches both of them and a Lighthouse at JB

Sandy beaches on the North Norfolk coast
beautiful

Definitely

PlanetNormal · 17/06/2022 19:06

St Ives when it isn’t stupidly, intolerably overcrowded. So weekdays in term time between September & June, then.

Sherringham is a good base. Small town but close to Cromer, Holkam plus a steam train that goes along the coast.

DontKeepTheFaith · 17/06/2022 19:08

I like
Whitby
Scarborough
Margate
Broadstairs
Littlehampton (day not holiday though)
Southend on sea (day trip also)
Anglesey
Shanklin on IOW
Blakeney in Norfolk

LadyJaneHall · 17/06/2022 19:09

I like Bournemouth. It has a lot to do, beautiful beaches, next to both Christchurch and Poole and close to the New Forest and Swanage and the jurassic coast.

RampantIvy · 17/06/2022 19:12

Wells-next-the-Sea
Tenby
Llandudno

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/06/2022 19:13

Lyme Regis?

I love the Dorset coast and Lyme is beautiful.

Emelene · 17/06/2022 19:16

Poole and Bournemouth. Quick boat ride/drive to Swanage and Weymouth from there too. I live near here though so I’m biased!

CottonSock · 17/06/2022 19:20

Southwold is pretty dull.
I like tenby as I don't think you can beat the beaches in a town setting. There are good kids attractions nearby. Obviously everyone else likes it too, especially recently.

Pyewhacket · 17/06/2022 19:21

Swanage

Quarique · 17/06/2022 19:22

Another vote for Lyme Regis. Charmouth is nice too.

undersleptagain · 17/06/2022 19:30

Lyme Regis

Sellingstress · 17/06/2022 19:36

Another note for Lyme Regis. Southwold and Aldeburgh are lovely too.

balalake · 17/06/2022 19:36

Llandudno is good for children. They may like the cable car or the tram, and the beach is large.

Awakened22 · 17/06/2022 19:41

Cromer is lovely - traditional seaside town without the crowds. Weather is always a gamble on the east coast but the beaches are stunning, crabbing from the pier is great for kids, crazy golf, amusement arcades and I think there is a soft play if all else fails.

caringcarer · 17/06/2022 19:41

Bridlington. They have 2 beaches, split by a harbour and the sands go on for 5 miles.

Spanielsarepainless · 17/06/2022 19:45

Wells-next-the-sea. Beach is continuation of Holkham. Town gorgeous, lots to do locally. I have been going for over 55 years. Second choice would be Scarborough.

DaisyDando · 17/06/2022 19:48

Is in not Woolacombe?

altiara · 17/06/2022 19:49

Woolacombe!

BarbaraVineFan · 17/06/2022 19:50

I've just come back from the Isle of Wight and would recommend anywhere there. You are no more than 9 miles from the coast at any point apparently, and there is so much to do for kids. We stayed at a place called Colwell Bay, definitely not a big town but lovely beach, but if you want a bigger seaside town you could go to Shanklin or Sandown.

SingleMomIreland · 17/06/2022 19:54

It depends what you want out of a holiday.
I know people who LOVE Blackpool....for me it's hell on earth.
Do you want unspoilt, typical British seaside, isolated,
Are you staying.for a week and want to see other things, or just the day?

UpendedPineapple · 17/06/2022 19:54

Exmouth? Paignton?

Disneygirl37 · 17/06/2022 19:56

Swanage
