Have you ever read the book and then seen the film

and been so disappointed with the way they completely changed the narrative ?

Not only that.. but then the miscasting of the actors obviously chosen for their fame and not their suitability ruining the picture you have in your head and the story ?

Yep, that is normal. That's why I rarely go to see a film when I've read the book.

StopFeckingFaffing · 16/06/2022 23:36

Captain Corelli's Mandolin springs to mind

TheGirlWhoLived · 16/06/2022 23:38

Always. Almost every single time

GreenTeaPingPong · 16/06/2022 23:38

There was a thread about Jane Austen's Persuasion yesterday, very much along those lines, if the trailer's anything to go by.

MrsEricBana · 16/06/2022 23:38

Tom Cruise as 6"5" Jack Reacher....

AC2022 · 16/06/2022 23:39

Yes. Hart’s War.

I loved the book, but the film was an absolute disgrace. It’s been over a decade and I’m still annoyed.

TinaYouFatLard · 16/06/2022 23:40

Memoirs of a Geisha and The Time Traveller’s Wife. Both turned into trashy love film shite.

stitchinguru · 16/06/2022 23:41

ROOM…. Just didn’t work as a film.

User237845 · 16/06/2022 23:42

Captain Corelli's Mandolin was so awful. I loved the book; it was so witty and subtle. In the film, I didn't give a shit about any of the characters; they ruined it.

Also, less cerebrally(!), the Power of One. The premise of the book is that you don't need to rely on others, that you have enough power within you alone to live your life and change things - or that a person's self on its own is important. The film switched it completely to give the message, when lots of like minded people join together, they can change things. Irritating!

OgdensGoneNutFlake · 16/06/2022 23:42

The Beach by Alex Garland- they literally removed one of the 3 main characters from the film- he doesn't exist in it at all.
Completely different story.
Great film though!

JaneJeffer · 16/06/2022 23:42

All the time.

IstayedForTheFeminism · 16/06/2022 23:43

PS I love you.
The maze runner.
Shopaholic books.

Most film adaptations are shit.

longtompot · 16/06/2022 23:43

One Day

Time Travellers Wife (though I have grown to like the film)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/06/2022 23:44

There are very few movies which are as good as or better than their book counterparts.

Almost exclusively, the movie is worse.

ApplesinmyPocket · 16/06/2022 23:44

Worst disappointment ever was The Dark is Rising (Susan Cooper) - one of my all time favourite books - RUINED. Bore so little resemblance to the book - but just enough to be offensive.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/06/2022 23:44

I was fucking livid that they changed the ending to My Sisters Keeper.

SammysGG · 16/06/2022 23:45

My Sisters Keeper... they changed the ending and as a 15 year old who had read the book a couple of years before and loved it, I was devastated at how badly it was portrayed as a film! I remember leaving the cinema outraged. Clearly still fuming all 13 years later

LIVID!!!!

The only film that came anywhere close to the book wa thed first Harry Potter. And even then they missed the dragon bit.

Everything else? Nothing comes close.

longtompot · 16/06/2022 23:47

Just remembered Bridget Jones Diary. Loved the books, well the first one, and they totally lost what the books were about making the films.

SpiderVersed · 16/06/2022 23:47

Nearly every adaptation ever.

I think Life of Pi was as good as the book (if not slightly better). It was a visual masterpiece.

I also preferred by far the tv adaptation of Little Fires Everywhere over the book.

LifeIsBusy · 16/06/2022 23:50

Noughts and crosses... TV adaptation but still horrendous.

I actually really didn't like the help as a book 🤔.

HRTQueen · 16/06/2022 23:53

Many times it’s not as good and I have already cry much pictured the characters and places so it’s confusing 😬

The Beach novel was darker and more disturbing but I did enjoy the film

Silence of the Lambs is a brilliant book and film but from the film he didn’t come over as obsessed about his mother

One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest I liked the film as much

and Of Mice and Men

Bunty55 · 16/06/2022 23:53

The only film I have seen that did justice to the book was 'The Constant Gardener'
