Have you ever read the book and then seen the film

and been so disappointed with the way they completely changed the narrative ?

Not only that.. but then the miscasting of the actors obviously chosen for their fame and not their suitability ruining the picture you have in your head and the story ?

To those who ( like me ) hated the film , and the atrocious miscasting of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin - who would you have preferred in the leading roles ?
And who would be your Carlo ?

suzyscat · 17/06/2022 20:14

Other than the David Jason, Pam Ferris Darling Buds of May, and Fry and Laurie's Jeeves and Wooster I think probably all the book to screen adaptations are petty dire tbh.

(Oh Muppets Christmas Carol and an old ITV Rebecca with Diana Rigg are great too.)

Don't think I will ever get over High Fidelity. Fever Pitch also dire. Tom's Midnigjt Garden, Where The Wild Things are The Little Prince. We're going on a bear hunt also so crap.

I suppose lots of classic films are based on books, Jurassic Park, Bladerunner amongst others, but I've not read the book first, so can't really comment.

Funnily enough, The Handmaids Tale has really grown on me. The adaptation of Alias Grace stays quite close to the book too.

I wish they'd do Rosamond Lehmann's Invitation to the Waltz and the follow up The Weather in the Streets - as I really think they'd translate well to the big screen. Similar to Downton Abbey in writing.

I’m still avoiding the adaptation of Alias Grace as I couldn’t bear it to be ‘wrong’, but I’ve heard quite a few people say it was well done so maybe one day I’ll give it a go!

The Remains of the Day, felt Emma Thompson was the wrong choice for Miss Kenton.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 17/06/2022 21:07

I went to a book signing with Jodi Picoult who talked about the ending of my sister's keeper! She said she was removed from the set for disagreeing with the change of ending! Worst film adaptation for me was The da Vinci code! Loads of important stuff missed and the casting of Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon was awful!! Nothing like the character in looks or demeanour!

learieonthewildmoor · 17/06/2022 21:21

I just tried to watch Kenneth Branagh’s “Murder on the Orient Express” but had to give up because of the moustache.

BigBadBoom · 17/06/2022 21:27

I haven't watched My Sister's Keeper as the book was so devastating, but now I'm desperate to know how they messed with the ending...

BigBadBoom · 17/06/2022 21:36

Also 'The Beach' enraged me too. I loved that book (over twenty years ago 😳) and the casting was wrong, switching all the nationalities really annoyed me, cutting out Jed (Jeb?) was outrageous, and the bloody romance that should never have happened.

I do try to avoid adaptations of books I love now. I daren't watch the Goldfinch (unless someone else who loves the book now comes on to tell me it's fabulous, then I might risk it).

The other sister died xx

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 17/06/2022 21:53

Matilda. Looking forward to the netflix version tho.

Charlie and the chocolate factory. I know everyone loves the old one but I never did. Really like the tim burton one, although could have done without the dentist trauma being added.

There was a really good version of the worst witch in the 90s.

Monr0e · 17/06/2022 22:17

I generally agree always that the book is better than the film.

But as already mentioned, for me the absolute worst was The Dark Is Rising. I love the book and the series, I was so looking forward to the film. But it was awful in every sense possible.

I'd love to see it done properly. I've been enjoying the BBC adaptation of His Dark Materials, so much better than the film. Even though the series also changed somewhat from the books. But I could imagine this being done successfully for The Dark is Rising series too. It would be fantastic in the right hands.

Titsflyingsouth · 18/06/2022 09:54

Captain Corelli's Mandolin for definite. It was an embarrassingly bad adaptation of an amazing book.

I hated the changed ending of the tv drama of A Room With A View. In the book Lucy and George are together, happily looking out at the beautiful view from their room. In the tv version, George has died in the First World War, and she is alone! Just why???

Which adaption is that? The one with Helena Bonham Carter it ends all happy.

Cranefliesthinkthecarroofiswater · 18/06/2022 12:08

The 1995 version of Cold Comfort Farm. I'd done it for A level Eng lit and had read it about eight times, so had a clear image of what the characters were like. Almost everyone, without exception, was badly cast. Mrs Smiling, written as a small, dark Irish woman was played by Joanna Lumley, ffs, and Mr Mybug was played by Stephen bloody Fry. I'd always seen Flora as tall and fair, but she was played by a very annoying Kate Beckinsale. The whole thing was twee and chintzy and utterly enraging.

The best adaptation I've seen is Room With A View, which was excellent. A reviewer described it as 'dangerously close to perfection'.

The television version with Rafe Spall.

declutteringmymind · 18/06/2022 13:34

The Color Purple is one of my favourite books and one of my favourite films.

Georgeskitchen · 18/06/2022 13:34

Stephen King's Pet Sematary comes to mind. I read the book in the 80s when I lived alone

I had to sleep with the light on 😆 watched the film a few years later and found it very disappointing.

Started to watch the remake a few years back and it was rubbish

Dobbyatemysocks · 18/06/2022 14:10

The Meg by Steve Alten!

I read the books years ago and was actually quite excited to see the film.

Apart from the shark EVERY SINGLE character has been changed - just WHY?
They have completely ruin

Just remembered Bridget Jones Diary. Loved the books, well the first one, and they totally lost what the books were about making the films.

Absolutely loved the first book but the film was dreadful. Unfunny and cringy and Renee Zellwegger was just awful.

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 18/06/2022 14:17

Yes all the time. The only exception for me was Twilight because at least the film had a bit more in it than Bella's endless drivel.

Dobbyatemysocks · 18/06/2022 14:27

Have no idea what happened there.........

They have completely ruined the chance to make anymore of the films. That said, I did enjoy the film - the nods to Jaws are quite sweet.

The other series of books that would have been great, had they not screwed up the first one, is The inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini.

The first books, Eragon, was written by Christopher when he was 15 years old. The film company swooped in and brought the rights and despite Christopher telling then that the story would be continuing, they rushed the first film out. As a compromise, and to increase their profits. The film company agreed to add the scene at the end showing a second dragon - all good, so they thought and buy the options to any other books.
The second book got finished and the film company realised how badly they had shot themselves in the foot. There was no way they could continue because of major errors within the first film.

They now own the rights to four books, which if done properly, they could have had another really good film franchise in their collection.

All because the powers that be didn't have faith "in a 15 year old kid, who caused a bit of a stir with his first book".

Snow falling on cedars & cold mountain.

Shamoo · 19/06/2022 00:15

I came on to say My Sister’s Keeper. It pops into my mind quite regularly and fills me with rage each time! Also the casting of The Di Vinci code meant I never watched it. Glad to see I’m not not alone 😂

Controversially I hated Atonement as a book but enjoyed the film (watched it under protest).

Perhaps even more controversially, I enjoyed the Reacher film although of course it’s crazy casting. Also love the Harry Potter films (almost as much as the books) and think Strike is done well for TV (although could do with being longer).

I saw the Kite Runner as the play in London and - wow. I wept and wept. Brilliantly done.

Bunty55 · 19/06/2022 01:43

IstayedForTheFeminism

I have to disagree with you about the book. My grandson is reading it. He's ten. It is a story he can read and understand and discuss with me and learn about the most terrible thing that ever happened in recent history without being subjected to the real horror of the holocaust.

The BBC Pride and Prejudice with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth was brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
Then a film of it was made with Donald Sutherland and pigs running through the house. That was their version of genteel poverty and it failed utterly. The film maker just did not understand Austen's world at all.
Film makers should have to demonstrate that they understand a text before filming it.
