Wtf is a "fuddle"

Exactly as the title says...
I started a new job Monday, and tomorrow there is an office "fuddle" to celebrate their end of year figures (yeah.. slightly random year end 🤷‍♀️). I'm extremely introverted and socially awkward at the best of times, don't make friends easily and small talk with people I don't really know is my idea of hell. Also, do I need to take anything? I have honestly no how to be a normal person in these situation. North Yorkshire border, in case it is a regional thing?

Finance related “huddle” (agile term)?

PresidentByeThen · 16/06/2022 22:23

Yup everyone brings a food dish, in our office it's a cheese board, packet of sausage rolls etc rather than a lovingly homemade casserole and everyone stands round chit chatting over the paper plates.

wizzler · 16/06/2022 22:23

A fuddle is an office buffet..everyone brings something.. crisps, cakes , sausage rolls .. that sort of thing

Hyvsvaar · 16/06/2022 22:23

I’m Scottish and a fuddle is like a muddle…ach don’t get yerself in a fuddle, don’t know any other use for it…maybe a bit like a huddle?

MissAtomicBomb1 · 16/06/2022 22:23

It's a buffet type thing where everyone takes something. I only heard the term a few yrs ago (Derbyshire)

AdalbertWafflin · 16/06/2022 22:23

Hmm.. my department does work closely with the finance department. The email made it sound a bit like a.. party?! But not a party, I don't know.

TroysMammy · 16/06/2022 22:24

Do they mean a huddle? I've heard of that and participated in (a meeting standing up) but I first thought it meant a fucking huddle, a bit like using the word fugly for fucking ugly.

Hermanfromguesswho · 16/06/2022 22:24

We have them at work. It’s a mix of food and muddle I think. We all bring something food wise and then share everything at lunch and chat.
Bring something easy like cheese twists and a couple of bags of kettle crisps!

SpiderVersed · 16/06/2022 22:24

It’s a pot luck meal. And yeah, regional term for it.

AdalbertWafflin · 16/06/2022 22:26

Oh. Well that sounds fucking awful. 😣

In our place it's an informal work related team meeting with food. Everyone brings something snacky to share.

NannyR · 16/06/2022 22:26

I only heard this term recently, it was referring to a sort of buffet party where everyone brought some food to share.

nocoolnamesleft · 16/06/2022 22:26

I worked somewhere that used the term fuddle. It was expected for everyone to contribute food. I always thought it was a contraction of food huddle.

FrankGrillosFloof · 16/06/2022 22:27

Why wouldn’t you just ask someone at work?

SingleWhiteEmail · 16/06/2022 22:28

It’s a food huddle - pot luck lunch thing 😂

Cheese twists and kettle chips.. got it.
Is it generally frowned upon to slink off quietly at these things?
It's a pretty large office and I think 'everyone's invited, but I don't really understand company culture to know what's ok and what's not?

Because I'm ridiculously socially awkward and the thought of that makes me want to curl up into a ball and die? If the Internet isn't for idiots like me to ask questions on hoe to human, then what is it for? 😅

Sorry but that sounds horrible! Good luck 🤞

Surely this is the perfect opportunity to discover the company culture.

Loadedforest · 16/06/2022 22:32

Maybe you should try and seek some therapy if you’re so introverted you can’t ask a basic question at work. How do you manage with more important questions?

Ihatewinding · 16/06/2022 22:32

I thought it was a combo of food and huddle, also only come across in Yorkshire haha but agree with PP, stuff like crisps, cakes, sausage rolls - stuff that can be put on a table in morning when you get to work then crack it all open at break time and chat and eat

Matildahoney · 16/06/2022 22:34

Clearly my head is in the gutter! Not what I thought a fuddle might be at all! Anyone else?! 🙈

Nah they're informal- not everyone can get the time free, for a start. For some people, it's just saying hi whilst grabbing a vol au vent on their way to their next call.

Crinkle77 · 16/06/2022 22:37

Never heard of the term fiddle but we call it a Jacob's Join.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 16/06/2022 22:37

@AdalbertWafflin yeah I used to slink off, either completely unnoticed because everyone's busy gabbing or if not I'd sort of wave my phone and say 'oh got to get this email sorted, urgent, you know how it is....' and then wander off and look busy at my desk.
