Railcards for over 30s?

Dodolovesme · 16/06/2022 14:57

Hi, apologies for the super boring post...
just wondering if anyone might know of a railcard I'd be eligible for.
I travel a lot for work, in the north, will soon be aged 32 (currently have a 26-30 railcard which I renewed right before I turned 31 haha). Not disabled, or a veteran, travelling alone....
anything??

I’m a similar age and I don’t think there is one.

ElizabethCaroline · 18/06/2022 17:17

I looked a while ago because I'm early 30s and there was nothing. Only family railcards, pensioners and students.

mindutopia · 18/06/2022 17:20

You can get a Network Railcard. It saves me quite a bit, depending maybe on the kind of journeys you’re booking.

brainstories568 · 18/06/2022 17:29

Network Railcards are only in the south though. You can't get further than about Milton Keynes with them so wouldn't help out the OP if they're going on trains in the north.

There may be regional specific tickets that you can get or a season ticket might work out cheaper if you go to the same place more than once a week, but there aren't any general UK wide railcards for single people aged 30-60ish.

LadyCatStark · 18/06/2022 17:34

No, I’ve tried and tried to look for DH. They wanted over £500 for a monthly ticket 😭.

ClinicallyProven · 18/06/2022 17:34

No there isn't. I used to have a Two Together card when travelling with DH but there's nothing for single people who are neither young nor old.

How does that get round the age discrimination laws?

4am · 18/06/2022 17:35

Types of railcard that show up on my train app are ..... I've screenshot them and attached them here - big selection, maybe something to suit ?

Is there not someone who travels the same route and you could get a two together card?

Lonelycrab · 18/06/2022 17:54

I had a network railcard but as others have said it’s only the s/e it covers.

Antarcticant · 18/06/2022 17:59

Not for solo travel. You could get a 'two together' card for use with another person, or a 'family railcard' for use with DC (don't have to be your own DC).

Toddlerteaplease · 18/06/2022 18:07

Wish they did an NHS or key worker rail card!

sunshineandsuddenshowers · 18/06/2022 18:09

So rubbish, isn’t it.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/06/2022 18:16

I'm surprised an NHS railcard is yet to be proposed. (Or one linked to Blue Light discount) I'm entitled to a Forces railcard as DH is Army, and it covers the children as well when they travel with either of us.

There is a massive gap for 30-65 people.

RaaRaaLaLaLa · 18/06/2022 18:28

You could take an eleven year old with you wherever you go and get a family railcard.

It is absolutely ridiculous, the price of getting the train.

RaaRaaLaLaLa · 18/06/2022 18:29

Also, the student railcard can't be used before 9am! Confused

If you mean the 16-25, the minimum fare restriction is before 10am but usually lifted in July & August.

It can. But you have to spend a minimum of £12.

RaaRaaLaLaLa · 18/06/2022 18:44

Yes, more than £12 per journey but you can use it in July and August when you are on holidays.

So no good if you are using it to get to your college or university every morning unless you don't start until mid morning or it's more than £12.

Got dd a car instead.

Hardly a 'massive gap' - the whole point is that people 30-60 tend to be employed and paid a decent wage so can afford the train fare. If everyone got a discount what would be the point? They might as well just lower the cost instead

So why offer the Two Together railcard for all ages travelling as a pair? There are discounts for almost everyone, except single people 30-60.

Couples and families, young and old can all save 1/3 with a railcard and groups of 3 or more automatically get 1/3 off with a group saver. It feels very much like a another single supplement, rather than a discount.
