Railcards for over 30s?

Dodolovesme · 16/06/2022 14:57

Hi, apologies for the super boring post...
just wondering if anyone might know of a railcard I'd be eligible for.
I travel a lot for work, in the north, will soon be aged 32 (currently have a 26-30 railcard which I renewed right before I turned 31 haha). Not disabled, or a veteran, travelling alone....
anything??

Wish they did an NHS or key worker rail card!

Why on Earth do NHS/key workers need a railcard?!?

So why offer the Two Together railcard for all ages travelling as a pair? There are discounts for almost everyone, except single people 30-60.

Couples and families, young and old can all save 1/3 with a railcard and groups of 3 or more automatically get 1/3 off with a group saver. It feels very much like a another single supplement, rather than a discount.

Yes exactly! Being single is an expensive way to live :(

burnoutbabe · 18/06/2022 22:36

Well they offer 2 together as once it's 2 of you then driving /hiring a car becomes better value. So they need to encourage them that the train is still cheap.

Yes of course I did that first and drew a blank! hence asking here 🙄

You can get a Network Railcard. It saves me quite a bit, depending maybe on the kind of journeys you’re booking.

Yeah as someone else said I think, they're only for the south.
I'll be mostly travelling with transpennine express

If you get a family or two-together one, can you use it alone??
I'm not single, have a DH and toddler, but neither of them will be travelling to work with me 😂

Also I only need to go in 1/2 days a week, so probably not worth a season ticket

To try and get cheaper without a railcard, use the tickety split website. I’ve saved money on there before.

Stupid, snarky reply. Why not also ask people who might have experience in different areas on a forum such as this? If you can't say something more helpful than that then say nothing at all.

OP, I am 55 now and have been looking for years as I often travel by train from the south east to my mother's house in the Midlands. There is nothing for our age group, especially if you normally travel alone. It's shit really.

SpaceJamtart · 20/06/2022 11:20

Not trying to be arsey, actually curious,
What would the point be if there was a railcard for every group?
Surely the railcard is there to make it cheaper for younger people who cant be high earners and the elderly who are not earning anymore, if every age had a railcard, wouldn't that be the same as nobody having one? Because they aren't going to have lower prices for everybody so wouldnt they all go up?

We all need to get to work though. Not just you.

I would double check that it definitely isn't cheaper to get some form of season ticket. Pre COVID we were looking at moving somewhere outside of London, I'd still have kept my job within zone 1 and I was looking to reduce my hours. On that line the day return fare for peak train was so high that it meant that you'd only have to go in twice a week to make it cheaper to get a season ticket. Similarly now operators are doing things such as pay for X return journeys to use over Y period type "season tickets" to reflect the fact that a lot of people are no longer going into the office every day.

And no, you can't use any of the railcards you've listed as an individual person. You'd need to have either husband or toddler in tow and buy multiple tickets to be able to use the railcard. Whether they'd actually check said railcard is a different matter though!

Drives me mad.
By contrast, Germany are supporting people through the crazy fuel prices by offering a €9/month ticket for ALL YOUR RAIL TRAVEL ACROSS THE WHOLE COUNTRY. Just imagine…

BertieBotts · 20/06/2022 15:06

Just get a better paid job OP, easy as that Grin

And their Bahncard is available to anyone who pays for it - not age-dependent.

The 9 euro train ticket is only for the next three months. But train travel in Germany is more affordable than the UK to begin with.

Ghost24s · 02/11/2023 04:17

Step 1 :
Just add the correct day and month of birth and change the year of birth to match 30 years old
example : ( 10 / 07 / 199*(3)

step 2 :
choose an ID and add the long number but try to change only one number
Example :
T30*#####3(3)**

congratulations you just hacked the system 💀

Tezza27 · 03/02/2024 03:21

I know posted a little while ago honestly if your only 32 and look young enough I would just buy railcard again they won’t know your age and probs won’t question it think it’s ridiculous you can’t buy a rail card over 30 and train company’s are corrupt as anything so shouldn’t feel bad for it either

ACynicalDad · 03/02/2024 03:26

you’re now waiting until your 60s!

lljkk · 03/02/2024 04:47

Look for flexi-tickets, they tend to be worthwhile if you travel 2x/week over a 4 week period.
