Excessive sweating in groin area

I posted this in Womens's Health and had a couple of helpful replies, just reposting here in case anyone has anything else to add.

Not a troll. Been on MN for years, frequent name changer, MNHQ welcome to check me out, name changed for this as so embarrassing.

I have a problem with excessive sweating in my groin/crotch area. Had it for years but seems to be getting worse as I get older (late 40s). I shower and wear clean cotton underwear every morning but by lunchtime I am damp and feel very uncomfortable. Luckily I only work mornings and have to shower and change when I get home. I'm sure it's not wee but do wear a tena light pad to try and absorb some of it. There's no way I could wear light colour trousers, dresses and skirts are difficult.

I can't even imagine going to the GP about this and starting the conversation. Anyone else out there who suffers and can give me any hope? I did read about botox but no idea if this is safe or effective l

Try taking talc out with you as a short term thing. I think you need to bite the bullet and speak to GP or get a consultation in pharmacy. They seem to cover lots of things now. I had this when peri menopausal but it cleared up. I was wearing a light pad, cotton pants but the lycra stretch trousers on top for work. The trousers def did not help.

Thank you for your reply. Maybe I will have to be brave and get a GP appointment. They're still not doing face to face (annoying) so even more cringe over the phone! And doesn't seem that important in the grand scheme of things.

I know you said groin but - wince- isn’t Botox suppose to help?
Do you carry your weight on tops of your legs? I do hence the name. Once I got to ideal weight it helped. I will never in a billion years have a thigh gap but less fat up there does help.
With the state of the nhs your gp may not offer treatment but could at least give you an idea.

I came here looking for this exact same topic. I am not quite 40 yet. I work a lot from home and change my pants 3 times a day usually.

I read that botox only works on feet, hands, and arm pits but I could be wrong!

ToGetToTheOtherSide · 15/06/2022 20:01

Thanks for the replies. I do have large thighs and could definitely do with losing some weight, however I have had this issue when thinner too. I did read about botox, just not sure if it's safe!! But would consider it as an option. Maybe I need to seek advice through private health care.

Not that I'm wishing someone else to suffer with this, but it's a relief to know it's not just me.

I’m very fat. And old. My groin area sweats overnight like a dammed waterfall.

easyday · 15/06/2022 20:05

You can use stick antiperspirant in that area - might give that a try?

flowersfortea · 15/06/2022 20:15

If you’ve had it for years it could be localised hyperhydrosis. You can buy aluminium based roll ons over the counter to use alongside the day to day things you’re already doing, but if no improvement after several weeks of use please speak to your GP. If there’s no rash or other skin changes they won’t necessarily ‘need’ to see you in person before referring you to dermatology.

ILIWYS · 15/06/2022 20:15

Agree with trying talc

ToGetToTheOtherSide · 15/06/2022 20:27

This is all really helpful thanks so much everyone

I have the same issue! Only 37 and I'm very slim so it's not a weight thing, I have no idea why this happens! It's so so annoying and I'm still trying to find out why. My thyroid was recently tested and it was all fine

I've had this when thinner too (currently definitely overweight), at least I know it's not self inflicted although I'm sure my weight and large thighs don't help

I have the same issue. Been like this since my 30s and has gotten worse with age and weight gain. I'm not ready to go the botox route so I just wear liners and change them as needed, usually only twice a day.

GigantosaurusRex · 15/06/2022 21:05

This is no help to you but I'm so glad I'm not alone. I am very overweight but this has been a huge problem for me in the last year - I think it's caused by perimenopause and I hate it. I'm following for suggestions.

Wallywobbles · 15/06/2022 21:07

I use a tena pad. I can't imagine the damage without. Talc at night sometimes. No solution. I'm fat, perimenopausal and prone to sweating. But now it's all in my pants.

Geometri · 15/06/2022 21:09

I have this. Head, throat, all of my back and groin. I’m going to try period pants I think. And then after that, Runderwear. I just don’t have hand sweat basically. I feel whole droplets streaming down my back, down the back of my legs, and it’s gross.

I can’t afford botox but also I read that it wears off and the next time you get it it lasts half as long as before every time until it just stops working.

there was also a thread in here where someone with excessive sweating suggested something called oxybutinin as an oral medication. I would try to link the thread but I’ve given up on AS!

ToGetToTheOtherSide · 15/06/2022 21:10

Oh gosh it's honestly so good to know I'm not alone! My sympathies to all my fellow sweaty betties. It makes you feel so yuck and feels like a dirty secret. I'm sure I'm peri menopausal too, which makes it worse.

It is actually a huge help to know I'm not alone. Have felt a lot of shame over this. So thank you for sharing your experience.

I've taken to wearing lighter flow period pants most days, especially now it's hot, and it really helps. I feel much more comfy. When I tried pads, the plastic seemed to make the sweating worse. Primark period pants have proved very effective and a reasonable price.

You are definitely not alone. This was always a sweaty are for me even when very slim. My Dad sweated 'like a pig' so I think some of it, for me, is genetic

KangarooKenny · 15/06/2022 21:20

Try Asda’s liquid talc.

Maybe I will try some lightweight period pants. Good idea.
