Ideally somewhere with a nice sandy beach

Sellafield.

EcoCustard · 15/06/2022 14:01

Nicaragua, to the coast.

Whooshaagh · 15/06/2022 14:12

Portugal, its 42% cheaper than UK apparently.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 15/06/2022 14:47

Wow I’m shocked at Portugal
it’s also not far to visit the U.K. either
so tempting

The other two places I need to Google

100% Portugal, ideally the south

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/06/2022 14:56

Is this a 'might happen' type of question or a 'just dreaming' question? Because there are plenty of beautiful, hot, beach locations but If you actually wanted to live in one of them you might not be able to get the right to reside there. That would be a considerably smaller list of places.

notyourmam · 15/06/2022 14:56

Portugal's got a lot more expensive in recent years though, particularly in coastal locations. Much more for your money over the border in Spain.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 15/06/2022 14:57

More a dreamy type question as my youngest child still has a long time left at school, so wouldn’t do anything too drastic till he’s older

Turkey.

I would't go anywhere with the Euro because I've never found those countries to be particularly cheap.

Yodaisawally · 15/06/2022 14:59

Money goes far not so much, but I'd go back to Muscat in a heartbeat with a decent package.

DH is just back from the Algarve and was shocked by how cheap it is compared to here.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 15/06/2022 14:59

Costa Rica.

Or the very south of Italy if you want closer to home. The coast south of Bari is beautiful.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/06/2022 15:07

My DH is originally Malaysian and I was having a look at what we could get for our money out there, and the 'nice' areas are surprisingly expensive for property. Food and general day-to-day expenses are reasonable though. I was looking at properties on the shore in Penang (island) and it would be the best part of €1 million.

merryhouse · 15/06/2022 15:28

Thing is, anywhere your money is going to go a long way is, practically by definition, going to involve wealth disparities and the possibility of being involved in colonialism and exploitation.

Are you comfortable with that?

Costacoffeeplease · 15/06/2022 15:38

I live in the algarve, it has got more expensive recently, but still cheaper than the U.K. on balance. Just remember, if it’s a cheaper cost of living, that means cheaper wages too, the minimum wage here is about 750€ a month

JanisMoplin · 15/06/2022 16:01

Thailand. Also love the food.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 15/06/2022 16:59

Never thought of that !

LovelyYellowLabrador · 15/06/2022 17:00

Thailand did spring to mind but the algae e feels a lot more like home and also closer to home

Singapore - not easy though

I live in Portugal and not sure where this statistic is taken from but sure it's not correct. I find it slightly cheaper than the UK, eating out/alcohol markedly cheaper but other things more expensive. Property prices have escalated massively in the last few years with people throughout Europe choosing to buy here.
It's a wonderful place to live though.

Shitscared123 · 15/06/2022 18:18

@Yodaisawally yep I had this conversation with my son yesterday - said I wanted to live in Oman for a year. Fabulous country and people, and great base to travel from if you don’t want to be in the USE.

Expensive to buy, cheap to rent! Great quality of life in Penang though. It has a lovely balance of things.

Are we allowed to just up sticks and move to the EU still? I'm a long way off retirement but always fancied spending my twilight years somewhere hot and sunny, thought Brexit might have scuppered that

Costacoffeeplease · 16/06/2022 15:14

You can still move to an EU country but it means getting a visa. Different countries have different rules, for Portugal most people retiring here are on a D7 visa.
