How often do your DC drink fizzy drinks?

My DC have just discovered fizzy drinks. I'm grateful I've got away with it for so long (10 &12) but now they're asking for them every day. I don't drink them any more and I know I drank far too many before I was pregnant. What's an acceptable amount to buy in so they don't see it as forbidden but don't drink too much? (The eldest really doesn't need empty calories.)
One 500ml at the weekend? Plus if we're eating out (maybe once or twice a month in the summer). Or is that too stingy?

I think DD started "regularly" drinking fizzy drinks aroun 10-11 and with that I mean when out for a meal or at a party/friend's house.

We only recently started having them at home on a regular basis, she is 15 now.
She is not allowed them during the school week as she has sleeping issues, so only drinks them on a Friday and Saturday, 1-2 cans per day.

If we are on holiday I am not looking too closely.

I just don’t buy them in cos we don’t really drink them.
my 13 year old binges on them and wonders why he always feels sick but that his money to waste I guess.
my 11 yo and 8 yo have never been interested thank god!

DS 9 never! He has tried lemonade and coke and hated both.
That was DC10's view last year!

I'm quite surprised, I really thought everyone would say I'm being too harsh. Then I think I'll go for special occasions and eating out rather than one every weekend.

Never

Shaniice · 16/01/2023 22:38

My kids are 4 and 13 and I don’t buy it as I don’t drink it, so usually they’ll ask if we eat out or on holiday as a treat

Starcircle · 16/01/2023 22:47

Only lucozade when they are ill (they think that’s marvellous). I don’t buy it ever and if we are out to eat they get excited choosing between apple or orange juice because I only buy that for birthday breakfasts! I remember the dentist telling me kids are most likely to get tooth decay from fizzy drinks and it just stuck in my head so I avoid it almost completely

Dc are 9 and 10.

only when eating out and nothing caffeinated - 1 likes sprite and the other san pellegrino (the blood orange one 🙄)

The no coke rule is from when they were smaller…I wouldn’t mind the odd one now they’re a bit older but hilariously they police themselves over that one eg at a family wedding where cousins were drinking can after can, they stuck to one each, only lemonade and refused anymore ‘because that’s what we’re allowed’ then asked for water. I was drunk and couldn’t have cared less at that point. 😂but I’m not going to let on I’d be ok with them relaxing it just yet.

I live in a country that is one of the top consumers of coca cola and other fizzy drinks and also one of worst for obesity and diabetes. Please be careful about allowing your children fizzy drinks except on special occasions and educate them about their potential harm

SallyWD · 16/01/2023 22:58

My 12 year old loves them and they're only allowed when we go out for a meal (once every 2 weeks). I never have them in the house. My 10 year old hates fizzy drinks.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 16/01/2023 23:03

Never. I think it's because us parents don't have it and we never keep them at home. Though my dh have them sometimes when we are out, and let my dc try it, but never liked them. But he drinks sweet milk and fruit juice quite a lot.
I really don't see the problem, fizzy drinks, juice, it's all sugar. I don't worry too much, unless they are having excessive amount.

sunshineandshowers40 · 16/01/2023 23:05

When they/ we are out, holidays, Christmas and Easter (I Will usually have some in the house).

NewNovember · 16/01/2023 23:52

Never, they aren't suitable for children.

PurpleWisteria1 · 16/01/2023 23:57

My kids discovered them on holiday when they were 4 and 6 unfortunately. Now 10 and 13
We have them for treat occasions. Birthdays, Xmas, holidays, meals out. Whilst we don’t have them in the house generally,
i haven’t made them forbidden and actually been quite lenient. However they all absolutely love them. Can’t get enough and would have them every day if I allowed it.
Fizzy causes cavities though so I try to limit.

I bought a 2 litre bottle which was for the whole weekend and shared between them equally. We only eat dessert at the weekend too so fizzy drink as well made it more different to weekdays.
During the week they drank water.
