How often do your DC drink fizzy drinks?

My DC have just discovered fizzy drinks. I'm grateful I've got away with it for so long (10 &12) but now they're asking for them every day. I don't drink them any more and I know I drank far too many before I was pregnant. What's an acceptable amount to buy in so they don't see it as forbidden but don't drink too much? (The eldest really doesn't need empty calories.)
One 500ml at the weekend? Plus if we're eating out (maybe once or twice a month in the summer). Or is that too stingy?

Thinking about it, I only mean Coke etc. Not really bothered about Appletiser or those San Pellegrino fruity water type ones.

WDTABNONONO · 14/06/2022 17:51

9, 6 and1.

9 year old will have one every few months I'd say but only certain ones she likes.

6 year olds had sips but doesn't like them.

1 year old never obviously.

Pyjamagame · 14/06/2022 17:55

When we go out to dinner, so maybe once a month? I sometimes buy carbonated mineral water to which they might add squash. I don't allow any fizzy drinks with caffeine. They are 12 and 10.

When they're at their dads or when I take them
Out. Don't ever have them at home. They used to ask me to get them in but have learned not to bother, lol

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 14/06/2022 17:57

I don't take them out to eat often. Maybe once a month-6weeks

Nap1983 · 14/06/2022 17:59

Never. I’m lucky she doesn’t like them tried fizz once. However she’s 14 and I’d be ok with a few a wee probably.

SummerSummerSummertime · 14/06/2022 18:00

Get them a soda stream & they can fizz juice & water.

mafted · 14/06/2022 18:00

Younger two tend to have them when we eat out or have a party/bbq at home. I keep the tiny cans in all the time for mixers but they rarely ask for them.
Older two (now adults) both went through phases of drinking little else when they were teens but both mainly drink water now.

Natsku · 14/06/2022 18:01

We have "juice day" on Fridays (tradition from my childhood, though that was "can day") so my 11 year old gets a fizzy drink with dinner then and 4 year old gets a little carton of juice or something like that.
More relaxed about it on holidays, on holiday with my parents now and they've had juice (fizzy or still) every day so far but its a 6 week holiday so I'm going to tighten up in a week or so.

Smartiepants79 · 14/06/2022 18:13

Mine are a similar age and only have maybe 1 fizzy drink at the weekend or when eating out/on special occasions.
We have some in the house as the adults drink it a couple times a week.

Lulu1919 · 14/06/2022 18:19

One small glass if we eat out ...although they often chose squash or water
Birthdays Christmas etc we might buy a bottle ...but certainly not something we have in as normal

Isaidnoalready · 14/06/2022 18:19

Christmas birthdays and new year we were supposed to have some for the jubilee but didn't get around to buying it

Singleandproud · 14/06/2022 18:19

DD 12 doesn't drink juice and prefers water with ice. She does like fizzy though, I buy a bottle to share on Friday night that lasts the weekend and if we eat out I don't mind her having one. Although we tend to avoid it if she has any teeth erupting as that is when they are most vulnerable but we are pretty much past that stage now.

I think its nice to have treat food you look forward to and is still special, a bit like having Christmas food you just have at that time of year. Christmas treats lose their 'magic' when you can buy and eat them in October.

Cas112 · 14/06/2022 19:12

I wouldn't buy them in the house personally ever but would not say no if eating out as a treat.

Comedycook · 14/06/2022 19:19

Pretty much never. I was very strict about fizzy drinks... although I'm pretty easy going with food. They don't especially like them and I never have them in the house.

axolotlfloof · 14/06/2022 19:20

I have teenagers and they are never part of normal shopping.
We buy them if we have guests/birthdays/Xmas, and they can have one if we eat out/on holiday.
They are not part of everyday life.

lljkk · 14/06/2022 19:27

Big teen DS gets them every work shift.
I have lemonade in the house, I drink more than DSs. I don't buy other types of fizzy for home consumption ,but will offer lemonade (large glasses fine) to teen DC if we are having a restaurant or cafe meal.

When they were little I used to share a large fizzy lemonade with them.

womaninatightspot · 14/06/2022 19:29

We all have a Diet Coke with monthly payday fish and chips also at parties etc. Cost of everything it might need to go anyway

ItisallPooh · 14/06/2022 19:31

My mum told me that fizzy juice was for over 12s just as alcohol is just for over 18. I totally believed her until I was in my 20s! Grin
It sort of worked as my sister has never bothered with fizzy juice. I, however love an ice cold Diet Coke.
I've more or less stuck to the same principle as this and I think my 10 year old has had a couple of fizzy drinks. She isn't that bothered about having more.
My youngest would drink it a lot more given half a chance but only gets at special occasions too.

On my street 4 year olds play out with Dr peppers in their hand 🤦🏼‍♀️

😓

Malbecfan · 14/06/2022 19:34

DDs are 22 and 21. DD1 is partial to a Prosecco or two. Both quite like a G&T or a Pimms with lemonade. Apart from that, they don't do fizzy drinks. As kids, they had an occasional sprite or coke, but less than one per month.

MrsJBaptiste · 14/06/2022 19:39

DS1 is 18 and would drink Pepsi Max all day if he could (and probably will at Uni) but he probably has a couple every day until they run out. Then he has to wait for the 'weekend' shop and will have as many as he wants. I'm just happy it's Pepsi Max and not beer!

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 14/06/2022 19:46

We never buy it so just with a meal out

SlidingDoorsMoment · 14/06/2022 19:48

My kids had them a few time’s a week from about age 10, before that just occasionally. Now they’re teens, our oldest doesn’t drink them but our youngest has a can of Diet Coke most days.

limitededitionbarbie · 14/06/2022 19:49

Hardly ever as she prefers tea or cordial or water.
