Yorkshire Coast - hidden gems

Coming to stay just outside Scarborough for a week at the end of the month. I haven't visited since I was a child. We will go to Flamingo Land with the kids (my daughter has requested this for her birthday day out)

I'm looking forward to going back to Whitby for the day and having some good fish and chips - without skin lurking under the batter I hope.

We'll take a trip into York, and possibly Bridlington. We'd ideally like to avoid spending too much money on 'attractions' as we have other holidays to budget for this year - however the kids are partial to a funfair. Mostly we'd like to drive to scenic towns and villages for nice seafood/wine/ice creams with a view.

Where would folk who are local to/familiar with the area suggest?

Robin Hood's Bay

Runswick Bay

SingleWhiteEmail · 13/06/2022 13:51

Falling foss is lovely as is Boggle Hole

SilverGlassHare · 13/06/2022 13:52

Staithes - very pretty little coastal village north of Whitby.

We went to Yorkshire last summer and went to Oliver's on the Mount. It is a cafe but the view from the cafe is amazing.
And Oliver's mount is unusual as well. Great for a bit of an explore.

We also really enjoyed Flamborough Head. The RSPB is great and walking around, the cliffs are beautiful!

Danes dyke.
there’s a small fun fair on the front at Bridlington.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 13/06/2022 14:03

Filey is a really lovely seaside town, perfect for kids. The walk down from the car park, through the park with a boating lake down to the beach is magical.

Aposterhasnoname · 13/06/2022 14:03

Saltburn by the sea is lovely. Huge beach that goes on forever, and a water powered tram going up the cliffs ;(if they’ve got it working now) there’s a nice park with a miniature train and a tearoom. The seaview restaurant is fantastic, lunch on the terrace in a sunny day is unbeatable.

GalactatingGoddess · 13/06/2022 14:20

Great post! Following with interest.
I plan to visit Filey beach after seeing some stunning pictures of it!

AphraBehnsPencil · 13/06/2022 14:25

Helmsley.
Ryedale Folk Museum (Hutton le Hole)
Moors Railway/Pickering (might be a bit too ££)

AphraBehnsPencil · 13/06/2022 14:26

Also, the Moors Centre at Dalby.

AphraBehnsPencil · 13/06/2022 14:26

*Danby!! Dalby also lovely though.

CharlotteSt · 13/06/2022 14:29

I second Staithes.

garlictwist · 13/06/2022 14:30

I second Runswick, Saltburn and Staithes.

Sandsend is also a lovely beach, especially for kids.

WelcomeEverythingIsFine · 13/06/2022 14:32

Another one for Staithes, do the cliff coastal walk then lunch at the cod and lobster

whoami24601 · 13/06/2022 14:36

I really wish people would stop recommending Falling Foss on these threads- they're giving away my secret favourite place and I don't like it!

Carpediem15 · 13/06/2022 14:39

Forget Robin Hoods Bay - we were there a few weeks ago and the beach was quite dirty and overun with dogs.
We are going back to do the local Rail Journeys in a couple of weeks but will give RHB a miss.

thehillswerebright · 13/06/2022 14:54

The big park in Scarborough is lovely, I'm forgetting the name of it just now but it's well worth a visit

QforCucumber · 13/06/2022 15:00

While in Whitby take a ride to Grosmont on the steam train, get an ice cream there then head back - its only a 5 mile journey but absolutely beautiful.

We were there just at the weekend, I love Whitby

Hopeful16 · 13/06/2022 15:05

@mylittleyumyum re: Whitby don't get sucked into Magpie Cafe fish and chips - it's Quayside that are the best 😉 You're welcome!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/06/2022 15:07

Staithes is lovely (it’s where Old Jack’s Boat was filmed: no idea if this is still on CBeebies).
The Rotunda museum in Scarborough is interesting.
There’s a big water park - Alpamare - in Scarborough too.
My DC have always enjoyed boat trips from Scarborough.
Leaholme is pretty village for a nice tea.

mylittleyumyum · 13/06/2022 16:04

Thanks all, I'm getting excited now! @thehillswerebright Peasholm Park? I have some lovely memories of rowing on the boating lake and watching the model ships.

@Hopeful16 tell me there is no skin on their fish - my friend was at Papas this weekend and was surprised to see it (we skin our fish before battering up here!)

Saltburn - I'm sure I read a thread some time ago about places which gave you a bad vibe and this was mentioned several times? Now that would be an interesting trip!

QforCucumber · 13/06/2022 16:12

ooo I love Saltburn, hate Redcar though (and I'm typically closer to Redcar)

Both are a good 30 mins drive from Whitby, over an hour from Scarborough though so potentially not worth the trip!

Runswick bay and Sandsend definitely :)

MrsPnut · 13/06/2022 16:16

Looking for fossils on the beach at Danes Dyke, Sewerby Hall and the land train to and from Bridlington.
I also love Falling Foss and Boggle Hole.
