Yorkshire Coast - hidden gems

Coming to stay just outside Scarborough for a week at the end of the month. I haven't visited since I was a child. We will go to Flamingo Land with the kids (my daughter has requested this for her birthday day out)

I'm looking forward to going back to Whitby for the day and having some good fish and chips - without skin lurking under the batter I hope.

We'll take a trip into York, and possibly Bridlington. We'd ideally like to avoid spending too much money on 'attractions' as we have other holidays to budget for this year - however the kids are partial to a funfair. Mostly we'd like to drive to scenic towns and villages for nice seafood/wine/ice creams with a view.

Where would folk who are local to/familiar with the area suggest?

Pickering ...
Malton ...
Staithes ...
Goathland ...

Sewerby just up from Bridlington has lovely gardens a small zoo , tearoom and the hall/ museum. Either take the land train from Brid or walk up the coastal path.

There’s a place called Burniston rocks beach that’s perfect for fossil hunting. No one ever goes there (except me and the dog) - Google it for directions

Hopeful16 · 13/06/2022 17:26

@mylittleyumyum I don't remember skin it would not have made me happy 🤮

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 13/06/2022 17:39

My kids' favourite thing on our last holiday there was the walk from Robin Hood's Bay to Ravenscar. Depending on the tide you can go one way along the beach and return along the cliffs. It's harder than it looks as you drop back to sea level few times, but there's a lovely tea room at Ravenscar for a brief recovery.

Avoid Saltburn at weekends, parking can be a nightmare then and Bank holidays The rest of the week is fine. The cliff lift is working now.

FreezyFreezy · 13/06/2022 18:04

Filey, Flamborough, Withernsea, Hornsea. All lovely, traditional seaside towns.

Thinkingblonde · 13/06/2022 18:06

I read the thread about Spooky Saltburn. I think some people got spooked by the old disused Victorian mortuary on the hill side of the cliff. It was built for the bodies of sailors and fishermen washed up on the beach. It’s tiny, and looks gothic.
Saltburn is a small town but has some really quirky independentt shops,
Whitby: Theres a good fish restaurant/shop over the swing bridge in

Whitby, Mr Chips. It’s licensed.

Ravenscar. Park near Raven Hall and walk across the golf course and down the cliff path to the rugged shoreline. Seals will be there and lots of fossils to look for. It is a steep walk and need to know the tide.

Walk from Boggle Hole to Robin Hoods Bay across the beach and then back over the cliffs.

Whitby West Beach to body board.

Saltburn - I'm sure I read a thread some time ago about places which gave you a bad vibe and this was mentioned several times? Now that would be an interesting trip!

We go on the Yorkshire coast every year! Staithes is a must!
I don't like Saltburn! Definitely vibes there that I struggled with. Maybe because it is not really a seaside resort and not quite a residential town. I dunno- just did not like it.
If you going with kids you must go to Alpamare in Scarborough! The infinity pool is to die for.

thehillswerebright · 13/06/2022 19:46

@mylittleyumyum yeah that's the name of it. Such a beautiful park!

FoxBaseBeta · 13/06/2022 19:50

Bempton cliffs is good if they like puffins, or Ben 10 cliffs as DS was convinced it was called.

Crochetpenguin · 13/06/2022 20:14

Bridlington animal Park . The bird show is amazing. Also Peasholm Park in Scarborough is a big favourite

munchbunch12 · 13/06/2022 20:27

As PP have said, Bridlington - Sewerby - Bondville Model Village are all good. also Filey and Flamborough. If you get chance, go on one of the open top buses in Scarborough or Brid.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 14/06/2022 00:36

Bridlington has the best mini golf I have ever been to, an indoor haunted pirate them which has been designed brilliantly. There is also a haunted pirate ship experience that I was too scared to go in but everyone I saw came out looking shocked.
Goathland where they filmed Heartbeat is great too. Driving up on the Moors we drove in and out of a storm, and could barely see in front of us.

SingleWhiteEmail · 14/06/2022 18:34

Raincliffe woods too, beautiful walks, wildlife and englands second biggest Conker tree! Plus it’s free and they do free stuff too if you look on their website

moggerhanger · 14/06/2022 18:47

RSPB Bempton Cliffs is fantastic - you might still be in luck with the albatross, but otherwise there are thousands of gannets, puffins and kittiwakes. Even if you're not into birds, it's a spectacular sight. The Yorkshire Belle does trips out of Brid if you want to see them from the sea.

Inland, Sledmere House, Kirkham Priory and Wharram Percy are nice to visit. (Wharram Percy is our family special place.) When my kids were younger they loved Williams Den near North Cave.

Springbunbun · 14/06/2022 22:15

theres an ice cream farm near Whitby that is free to enter has a play park that is free and a free nature trail as well

beacon farm ice cream

storminabuttercup · 14/06/2022 22:42

The BEST fish and chips in Scarborough are north bay fisheries by peasholm park, check opening times, they are so good they don't even open all day like the others.
The views from up at the castle are brilliant, free if you're EH members.
Walk from the spa theatre right to the sealife centre along the front. I struggle walking far but can always manage that one. You can see the end goal 😂
The north bay beach is usually less busy but less facilities.
Lots of great places to eat, I find they are nicer places off the front than on.
Whitby is nice but feels crowded at times, parking can be a mare so there early, I'm not a fan of Bridlington but if we're in Scarborough for a week or so we sometimes get the train, wander round to sewerby which is a nice walk, grab a drink etc.
Filey is nice, park in the country park like a pp said and walk through the woods, it's just lovely.
I love Scarborough me

cheapskatemum · 14/06/2022 22:56

Ah, thank you all for reminding me of my childhood holidays! We used to drive from Pickering towards Whitby on a road that went across the N Yorkshire Moors, stop by a beck & go for a paddle, then eat a picnic & go for a walk. Is Darnholme still accessible to the public? I remember it being similar to Hutton-le-Hole. Thornton Dale is another lovely village.

swimmingincustard · 14/06/2022 22:59

South landing at Flamborough and Danes Dyke

Bridlington is really run down, Bridlington old town is lovely, one great street with Antique shops, tea rooms too.

Parts of it are, yes. But there's a fair amount of money going into gussying up the prom and adjacent areas. Plus over the last few years I've seen a few posher cafes and restaurants opening. I love Brid personally (want to retire there) - it is what it is, a bucket and spade seaside resort, with lovely safe beaches, great chippies, cheap amusements and pretty surrounding countryside.
