I learned French at school. Worked as an au pair in France then did a French degree. Also spent a couple of summers working for Eurocamp in France.

I decided to learn Spanish through Duolingo . We own a house in Spain and we are looking to emigrate from the UK eventually. It’s been about 4 months now into the course and I really feel this method of learning is great. The app will give some free tuition, you can opt to pay a fee for more personal feedback on progress. Hope this helps.

I'm learning to speak French through Duolingo. I have a basic understanding from GCSE.

My neighbours speak French with my daughter so I need to keep up.

Scraped a C in GCSE French thirty-odd years ago.
Now have weekly lessons and thoroughly enjoy it, despite the verbs.

A bit of German at Uni.

Welsh through Duolingo and from living just over the border.

I met my husband online dating and moved to his (Spanish-speaking) country.

AsanteSana · 09/12/2022 22:42

Kiswahili and some chiShona and isiZulu which I have learned from friends who were born in East and Southern African countries

Luckystitch · 09/12/2022 22:53

I speak German, learned for a year in the UK and then moved to Germany. Did intensive courses and lots of online apps and websites. The best is italki - you can book conversation lessons with native speakers and it can be very cheap!

I speak Gujarati, Hindi, Swahili and abit of Spanish together with English x

upinaballoon · 09/12/2022 23:04

I learned French and Latin at school for 5 years each. I had to do one year of German at school. I dabbled with a bit of Spanish from lessons on the radio when I was still at school. As a young adult I decided to learn Italian after I'd been on holiday to Italy. In those days the local authority provided evening classes so I went to classes and passed an oral examination and later passed GCSE Italian. So far I haven't studied for Italian A level and I don't suppose I will now.

2 other languages. One my mother tongue. The other Japabese, from living there for two years as a child.

garlicandsapphires · 09/12/2022 23:07

I try, off and on, to learn French, using Paul Nobel and Duolingo. Feel quite ashamed for my lack of languages.

earsup · 09/12/2022 23:11

Fluent Spanish, pretty good Portuguese and Catalan...lived abroad and also some Swahili.....started Romanian and Turkish but course went online and are still so wont bother until back in the classroom....apps are no good for me !

Kreuzberg · 09/12/2022 23:20

Degree in german and french. Last few years I've been able to watch a lot more streamed german and french films on Netflix etc as well as actual tv programmes/news because of my amazon firestick so my fluency isn't too bad.

katscamel · 10/12/2022 02:54

Very rusty French and German from school and uni. Basic Italian and Spanish from living/studying there. Having lived overseas I should know far more Arabic and Russian that I do and I'm actually quite annoyed with myself for being too lazy to study them.

dolor · 10/12/2022 02:59

Currently learning German via Duolingo. I remember a lot from school, and decided to see now much I remembered. Turns out more than I thought, so I've kept going. Currently in the diamond league 💎🤓

sashh · 10/12/2022 04:56

British Sign Language, I know some International sign language too.

I got hooked on Money Heist and I'd like to learn Spanish to follow Spanish TV / films without subtitles.

Wilburisagirl · 10/12/2022 07:35

I learnt French through distance education for two years, then 3 years at boarding school and one year at university. I haven't practiced in years but last time I traveled in France was able to hold a conversation, and order in shops etc without trouble.

I learnt German for 1 year in an adult language school and also regularly used CDs in the car. I was able to check into our hotel and order food but struggled with conversation while travelling.

I learnt Japanese for 5 years at school and doubt I could say much more than "hello, my name is..." these days, though by the end of school I was able to have a basic conversation.

Swissnotswiss · 10/12/2022 07:39

I learnt French, German and Russian at school and studied French and Italian at university. I then moved to Italy and married an Italian so my Italian is fluent but my French has suffered - I'm now trying to revive it! I also learnt Spanish as an adult but I'm still a beginner. My Russian and German are long gone!

lightand · 10/12/2022 07:41

Duolingo. Fairly unusual language maybe, well not the languages learnt at school.
Struggling with accents, so having a couple of books as christmas presents to see if i can improve things.

MsNightingale · 10/12/2022 07:41

Rusty French, German and Esperanto from school. I’ve done business trips to Germany and the language does come back when I’m immersed in it,

I’m currently learning Swedish on Duolingo because I like the sound of it.

Christmaswonder · 10/12/2022 07:42

I speak Welsh, have done since very early childhood - my DM spoke it to me as a toddler
and then I was Welsh medium educated.
