Any experience of an Alexa just losing the plot ?

We have an echo show in the kitchen
Last week one night , gone 11 pm. Dh, I and dd all upstairs in bedrooms, dog in kitchen. Alexa suddenly starts playing loud rock music from Spotify . Dh went downstairs, told her to stop, all good. 10 minutes later happens again. At that point we unplugged her for the night ( to think about the consequences of her actions)
All good then just now, I'm alone in kitchen, very quiet, suddenly she plays rock music from Spotify again, I tell her to stop, ten minutes later same again . Turned her off and on again and ten minutes later she says " sorry I didn't understand the question" but it had been all quiet before.
The weird thing is that on my history on the app, the only events you can see are people saying Alexa stop, in relation to the event, but not the event itself.
Bizarre and I need an answer!
No one else in house
No near neighbours.
Dog not that tech savvy .

Someone nearby can connect to your alexa I get a list on my Spotify my alexa my phone and someone else's Bluetooth no clue whose it is but I don't think they would appreciate the orchestral version of undertale (or maybe they would 🤪) both my neighbours say its not there's 🤷‍♀️

Aria999 · 11/06/2022 14:34

She is clearly haunted

Lolabalola · 11/06/2022 14:37

I've checked my Spotify and it isn't even linked to my Alexa and the last songs shown are the ones I listened to a few weeks ago.
I know it's a mumsnet cliche to say we live in the middle of nowhere but we really do. Our nearest neighbours would certainly be asleep by 11 and don't have a Spotify account even.
Son has Spotify but now he is about five miles away, if someone had hacked his account would that be it do you think? But wouldn't he have to be on the Wi-Fi ?

@Aria999 sadly the conclusion I am coming to
We may have to just burn her ( though maybe not environmentally friendly ) , exorcism?
I really like her when she isn't possessed !

My sons Spotify is linked to his Alexa, his younger brother went in to his room and asked Alexa a question and I got a call from older son who was miles away to tell his brother to stop asking Alexa silly questions as it was stopping Spotify play!
So it must be linked to your sons Spotify

Tipsyturvychocolatemonster · 11/06/2022 14:42

Someone is blue toothed in and playing music through it by mistake. I do it quite often, last week I was playing music by mistake in the bathroom when my friend was showering, I didn’t realise my phone had connected and was playing.

Lolabalola · 11/06/2022 14:47

@ponkydonkey
That's interesting , will get son to check his Spotify playlist. He definitely wasn't using it earlier as I messaged him and he is at work, but his account could have been hacked ? Will get him to unlink his Spotify from Alexa anyway.

That would have to be someone in close proximity though, no ? At the moment I'm on my own in the house . ( I think !)

A few weeks ago, out of nowhere, Alexa just said "no". Scared the bejeesus out of us. Told her to fuck off, she apologised 😅

tiredanddangerous · 11/06/2022 14:59

I leave mine unplugged now and just plug it in when I want to play music. It scared the shit out of me one too many times!

Member589500 · 11/06/2022 14:59

Ours started making farting noises. Apropos of nothing.
Repeatedly. At one point it said ‘oh that was a wet one’.
Was v funny.

Not necessarily. Our house is three floor and I’m occasionally able to send music to the top floor.

it’s not a person, it’s a machine. It only operates when a human operates it.

Mine also started doing this one day I was alone at home! Funny but also totally freaked me out. My gran passed away the week before and I was convinced she was sending me a message as she had a warped sense of humour and would have found this hilarious.

Lolabalola · 11/06/2022 15:54

Well she is now telling me randomly about rock hopper penguins
Plug is being removed .
Love the farting Alexas 🤣

Yes!!!

4am ,radio came on full blast.

Then it stopped playing BBC radio.

I've no retired her and have a Google nest and it's much better.

LivingInSin · 11/06/2022 16:13

We have echo dots in almost every room in the house, all fine except for the one in our bedroom. She randomly tells us about actors I’ve never heard of, historical events, tells us to have a nice day and plays a genre of music we hate and have never asked her to play. We call her the mad bastard. We left her unplugged for a couple of days to teach her to behave but she’s worse than ever. 😂

ChagSameachDoreen · 11/06/2022 16:55

Maybe the dog barked and she mistook the noise for the word "rock"?

ConfusedByDesign · 11/06/2022 16:58

Alexa scared the shit out of dh when she randomly started whispering at him 😂. He had no idea she could even do that and genuinely thought it was a haunting.
A few nights ago she kept switching on the lamp she's connected to even though we kept telling her to switch it off.

JMAngel1 · 11/06/2022 18:26

We had our Alexa in the kitchen diner just start cackling like a witch one evening - scared the absolute crap out of us. We asked her to stop and she did. Never happened again but I googled it and apparently at the time, it was happening quite a lot nationally. Freaked me out tbh. I switch her off now unless want to definitely use her. I don’t like the way she listens to everything.

Boopear · 11/06/2022 18:30

I have a Samsung phone and Spotify randomly plays on it if I am logged into the app (drives me mad😠) - is your phone bluetooth linked to the Show as that may explain the Spotifiy playing. Not sure about the other stuff though!

Piggypiggyoinkoink · 11/06/2022 18:56

Personally I think you’re grossly underestimating the dog’s tech capabilities 🤣

Maggiesgirl · 11/06/2022 19:03

My DS is logged into my Alexa although he lives 50 miles away. He can drop into my Alexa and it does what he tells it to. Scared the life out of me when the bloody thing started barking at me! Finally after looking in my app he admitted it was him.

One of my proudest parenting moments was when (then) 15yo DS RickRolled us via our bedroom Alexa as he disembarked from the plane after a four week expedition abroad, during which we received practically no contact whatsoever.

It was 5am so a particularly worthy effort IMO 😆

@Piggypiggyoinkoink
It's a chihuahua, have you ever met one ? 😝

@Lolabalola if it’s a chihuahua, you are definitely underestimating it’s tech capabilities 🤣 pretty sure the one I know could hack the Kremlin if it put its mind to it 😱
