Anyone had quinsy?

Felt ill for a while now but had a sore throat for nearly a week. It just seems to be getting worse and since yesterday one side of it is so painful. It feels almost like there's a spiky golf ball on one side when I try to swallow.

Anyone had quinsy and know if it's likely to be that or something else? Waiting for a call back from doctors but starting to get a bit panicky.

They weren't able to drain it so I'm back in the ward and going to get put onto IV antibiotics and steroids. I'm just panicking now that it won't go away because they couldn't drain it.

They didn't drain mine, the antibiotics cleared it. You will be fine

Thanks mewkins, that's reassuring to hear. How long did the antibiotics take to work for you?

You see I am still worried and don't know what to do for the best.

After a&e said he would need it draining and a drip - ENT doctor then said not necessary and sent him home with oral antibiotics.

He took them 4 hourly through the night but this morning his words were hard to make out because of the swelling, he is still spitting out rather than swallow, has had hardly any fluids or food, is nauseous - I suspect due to ibuprofen on an empty stomach, and very, very miserable.

I've just managed to get him to have a bit of smoothie and sip some water so that might help.

But at what point do I take him back? How long do I give the antibiotics to work?

Sorry to hear that. Is he doing any better now? I'd probably trust my instincts and if you think he's still not right contact them again.

For those of you who had quinsy and they didn't manage to drain any of it, how long did it take you to recover? Thanks.

I had Quinsy multiple times!! I had my tonsils out in the end because of the constant reoccurance.

They tried to lance mine with a scapel and couldn't. In the end it burst. Yes. And then after that, every time it happened it would burst in the weak spot. So gross.

I think it took a couple of weeks to feel much better (30 odd years ago!). It is horribly painful, so I feel for you.

ArtVandalay · 13/06/2022 14:33

I had quinsy as a child but I still remember being very unwell and the abscess bursting. It was awful.

hurtstoomuch · 13/06/2022 15:07

I'm quite scared it might burst! But equally worried that if it doesn't burst then it won't go away.
They couldn't lance it. I'm home now but have a list of things to look out for and if anything gets worse I'll need to go back in.

How are you feeling today @hurtstoomuch ?

I'm remembering how bloody horrible it was.

Haribeau · 14/06/2022 10:57

Had Quincy twice, utterly miserable, couldn’t swallow saliva, penicillin and draining of the abcess, horrific. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. Please get seen, really hope you feel better soon x

AmIDoingThisRight · 14/06/2022 12:00

I had this years ago. It was utterly grim. Couldn't swallow my own saliva, or drink anything. Penicillin kicked in after a few days and no lancing. It was a long time before I was able to swallow properly, or taste anything without that awful taste in the mouth. Sympathies to you OP - I hope you manage to get some relief from it soon.

My throat is starting to feel better and the swelling seems to be going down so hoping the antibiotics are working! Feel absolutely exhausted though, brain foggy and just a bit rubbish overall. Just trying to make sure I rest. Thank you for thinking of me.

The horrible taste is really getting to me. Can't quite put my finger on what it tastes like but it's not pleasant!

That is exactly what happened to me. I got quinsy multiple times. They caused excruciating pain.I was hospitalised with it too but lancing didn't work. I had IV antibiotics overnight and eventually the abscess would just burst.

I always felt much better after they burst, though the taste of the discharge was utterly foul.

For me the only permanent solution was to have my tonsils removed. That was done 18 years ago and was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I didn't get another sore throat until April this year, when I got Covid.

My nearly 20 year old student DD had it a few weeks ago while in her hall of residence. Her GP did treat it with strong doses of antibiotics (trying to keep people away from hospital still due to Covid) and fortunately that worked. I was in constant contact with her by phone (WhatsApp messages, as she could hardly even speak) and if it hadn't started to improve as quickly as it did I was ready to phone her porters lodge and ask them to send her to A & E in a taxi. I would have given her the money to pay for that, obviously

I hope you are better soon. Quinsy is shit. It certainly isn't just any old sore throat. .

mewkins · 14/06/2022 16:03

I was told that if I had it again in 12 months they would take my tonsils out but luckily I didn't. Good luck OP.

It's absolutely vile! A putrid, hideous claggy kind of taste that nothing will shift! Hang in there OP - there is light at the end of the tunnel and it does go, but my goodness it's a grim old slog. Courage to you.
