Anyone had quinsy?

hurtstoomuch · 10/06/2022 20:20

Felt ill for a while now but had a sore throat for nearly a week. It just seems to be getting worse and since yesterday one side of it is so painful. It feels almost like there's a spiky golf ball on one side when I try to swallow.

Anyone had quinsy and know if it's likely to be that or something else? Waiting for a call back from doctors but starting to get a bit panicky.

Yep. So painful I was desperate and had my tonsils out later that year.

Katya213 · 10/06/2022 21:29

My sister had it and nearly died and the very weird thing about that is the doctor who sent her to a and e, his son died of it two years later whilst at uni.

Go get checked out again.x

Vebrithien · 10/06/2022 21:38

Yes. As several other PPs have said, the pain was unreal. Couldn't swallow, struggled to breathe if I was lying on my back.
The thing which really alerted the OOH doctor I saw, was my voice. I had what is described as a "hot potato voice", where your voice literally sounds as if you have a mouthful of hot potato.

It was lanced, IV steroids, antibiotics and fluids. Oral antibiotics and steroids, once ai left hospital.

I had my first one at seventeen, then had them ever few years, increasing speed of onset and severity each time. Had my tonsils out at 30.

Weirdly, my mum also had them in the same pattern as me.

hurtstoomuch · 10/06/2022 21:49

Thanks again all.
At out of hours. They do think it's quinsy so I'm waiting to see what needs to be done next.
Those of you who were kept in or know someone who was kept in, was it for long?
Starting to get panicky.

I was kept in over night however was admitted about midnight and the ENT doctor was off shift for that night so had to wait to see them. Was given steroids, fluids and antibiotics overnight and felt sooo much better, it was then drained in the morning and I was home by that afternoon with a huge raft of antibiotics and throat spray to take. Hope you get it sorted soon

Pimpernella · 10/06/2022 22:31

Ds got there about 6pm. They are about to lance it now and decide whether IV antibiotics and stay or oral and send home.
Its going to depend though isn't it.
If they do send to A&E consider going home first if possible for battery packs chargers, overnight stuff to keep you fresh etc
Hope you feel better soon.

Hurtstoomuch asked how long it might take. Since DS is going through it right now, as explained upthread, I let her know our experience.

Pimpernella · 10/06/2022 23:15

Bit rude.

It's great you're getting seen. I was in overnight and allowed home the following afternoon. You will probably be hooked up to antibiotics and once it's in they monitor you for a bit then sent home with oral antibiotics. You should start to feel much better soon x

I had it a few years ago, it came on suddenly

By day 3 I managed to get an appointment at a walk in centre. I was prescribed antibiotics by the doctor who said if they don’t work within 24 hours they would refer me for surgery.

Luckily the antibiotics kicked in within 6 hours and the huge swollen area had burst and I spat it out (sorry for if that’s graphic).

I guess I was lucky the antibiotics worked but it’s highly recommended to get someone to see you as the swelling was causing me issues with eating and may then have affected my ability to swallow and breathe.

I hope your situation is resolved quickly.

I had the same, thankfully the antibiotics worked.

What ARE you on about? 🙄

DropYourSword · 11/06/2022 00:09

I had a quinsy in my early 20's. Honestly would prefer to go through labour again instead. Most painful thing I've ever experienced.

hurtstoomuch · 11/06/2022 00:16

Waiting in A and E to be seen...

How are you?

hurtstoomuch · 11/06/2022 10:18

Going to get it drained soon. Hoping that helps with the pain!

Ouch. I've got ds going to the out of hours with bad tonsillitis and swelling on one side. As someone who had tonsillitis 20 times in the space of a year in my 20s with 3 hospitalisations you have my utmost sympathy. Hope you are better soon.

MuthaHubbard · 11/06/2022 11:25

I was kept in for 24hrs after mine was drained and given iv antibiotics - same as a few pp.
Glad you are getting it sorted - so painful and definitely needed treated asap rather than leaving any longer

Amdone123 · 11/06/2022 11:38

@Pimpernella , hope your ds is soon on the mend. My dsis had quinsy - she said the same as @DropYourSword , she'd rather have given birth.
My dsis had rang me to say she had a sore throat and would I go to her house and look after her children. When I got there, she was on the floor, in agony. I rang her gp who made a home visit ( them were the days), gp took one look and rang for an ambulance.
Hope you're feeling better soon @hurtstoomuch 💕

hurtstoomuch · 11/06/2022 11:39

They weren't able to drain it so I'm back in the ward and going to get put onto IV antibiotics and steroids. I'm just panicking now that it won't go away because they couldn't drain it.

OP posts:
Amdone123 · 11/06/2022 11:56

@hurtstoomuch , it will go away. It will just take a bit more time. Try not to panic. Can you distract yourself with something? Ahh, mumsnet, perfect !
You're in the right place and soon it will be all over.
Sending you strength 💪

Thank you.
I think I had just built my hopes up that it would really help with the pain. On stronger painkillers now and getting my IV antibiotics and steroids so hopefully that'll help!
