Want to find a part-time bar job but already have a desk job, what if they ask me for a CV

Hi there,
Hope it is not a weird situation. I want to work part time in a bar/pub as I really miss the interaction with people (being WFH alone for almost 3 years), and I do like making cocktails and pulling a pint (was bartending at uni during weekend. I had great time and made so many friends.). So I want to find a part time bar/pub job. However, most of them ask for a CV which my desk job CV is totally irrelevant. How cab I get over this hurdle and find a part time bar/pub job. I live in London if it matters.

Any suggestion welcome. Thank you very much in advance.

Just write your CV to Taylor to that job and point out you do have bar experience.

Bettethebuilder · 10/06/2022 19:52

Pubs are crying out for bar staff in London. You won’t have any trouble. You’ve got relevant experience. My DD works as a teaching assistant and also works in a pub.

IcedOatLatte · 10/06/2022 20:00

It reads like you think you can only have one CV, are you assuming that you can't write one specific to a pub job, is that the issue?

@Bettethebuilder Thank you so much, can you please let me know how did he find this job and how did he handled the CV situation?

@IcedOatLatte - Yes, I thought so. My last bar job was over 10 years ago while in uni. I really have no clue how to explain this....Can you please give me some suggestions. Thank you so much.

You should write a cover letter explaining just how you have on here.

SophieHasOneQuestion · 10/06/2022 20:06

@Mol1628 - Thank you, do I still need to give my desk job CV with the covering letter?

I think you are way overthinking here, find a job, apply for it and answer what ever questions they ask you. There's a national shortage of hospitality staff, it's not an MI5 level application process 😂

And of course you can have more than one CV

OperationRinka · 10/06/2022 20:11

Tailor your CV to trim down unnecessary detail about your current desk job and big up your student bar work, and put an explanatory paragraph at the beginning. Something like
"I am an enthusiastic, sociable and reliable individual, with hospitality experience, looking for part time weekend/evening bar work to provide variation from my daytime desk job."

Most bars are not fussy at the moment.

whereamu · 10/06/2022 20:12

Def write a covering letter.
Also could you hand deliver the CV to the bar managers and have a drink whilst your there.
Hussle a bit Wink

liveforsummer · 10/06/2022 20:12

Just add the bar work to the cv. Unless it's a management position you're going for the cv is just a formality anyway. Could always add to your desk job any transferable skills such as customer service, prioritising tasks etc that is relevant to bar

OperationRinka · 10/06/2022 20:12

And yes, it's entirely normal to have different cvs for different job applications. You'd still include your current day job on it though.

I’m not sure what she did. I think she just emailed them. She had worked at this pub a few years before, though. I also have a lodger who works in a pub outside of her main job. She hadn’t worked in a pub before. All the pubs near me have adverts in the window looking for staff.

Ragwort · 10/06/2022 20:17

I think you are overthinking this, you are going to need a lot more confidence if you want to work in a bar or restaurant. Most hospitality outlets are desperate for staff, choose one you like the look of and go in, buy yourself a drink and have a chat.

bigbluebus · 10/06/2022 20:29

Just about every bar around here is looking for staff. If you have previous experience they'll snap your hand off. My DS has just been asked to help out covering shifts at a bar he worked at in the Uni holidays. He works 9-5 M-F in his day job so is happy to pick up a few evening shifts occasionally.

LightSpeeds · 10/06/2022 20:50

I just got an additional part-time evening job (people facing) in addition to my day-time job (admin and phone). They also wanted a CV so I just hacked around my profile to emphasise my working-with-people skills rather than the admin/computer side of things.

If they desperately need staff (which many pubs do) then so long as you're keen and confident and seem reliable then you'll probably be fine.

nancy75 · 10/06/2022 20:53

My DH is a pub manager - they are so short of staff in the West End pubs at the moment they literally do not care what you do when off shift!

Krustykrabpizza · 10/06/2022 21:04

I don't even understand the question. Just give them a CV that lists your work experience

SarahAndQuack · 10/06/2022 21:10

Agree with others - it'll be fine, just be up front and tailor your application to the job.

I'm currently employed as a temp university lecturer and in a garden centre. My applications for each post looked quite different; both my employers know I'm working for someone else as well, and it's fine. One of my colleagues is a nurse part-time and works in the garden centre part time; another one's a teacher. I think it is fairly common to run a job like what I do, or what you want to do, alongside something else more lucrative/more stressful.

SophieHasOneQuestion · 11/06/2022 06:26

Everyone, thank you so much for the useful advices. I genuinely didn't know that I can have more than one version of CV. Let me have a try.

Everywhere is desperate for staff, walk in and speak to the bar manager and give them your CV. They'll probably let you start the same day!!!

Handsnotwands · 11/06/2022 07:17

On a tangent, but I’ve been having the same thought exactly! Also i could do with the extra ££

id been thinking about the tax implications. My current work contract doesn’t forbid an extra job but I know it’s a question you are asked, whether it’s your only job. Can’t remember the wording, but would you get taxed to high heaven?

I really have no idea where this fallacy comes from. The amount of tax you pay depends on how much you earn not how many jobs you have

Putting aside the logistics of tax code splittng you absolutely dont pay more tax on a 2nd, 3rd or 4th job

The question about whether you have another job is to do with those logistics not so that you somehow get taxed at a higher rate

Bettethebuilder · 11/06/2022 09:35

To be fair, my DD tax code did alter when when she got the second job - something like the personal allowance dropped to 5,000. It was all very weird and DD couldn’t work out why she didn’t have as much money as she expected. The HMRC had made a mistake and had to pay her back- but the trouble was caused by the second job

bigbluebus · 11/06/2022 09:38

@Handsnotwands It makes no difference whether you earn the extra money from your current employer or a different one - your personal allowance is the same so anything you earn over and above that is taxed at your usual rate. DS has his full personal allowance code on his main job and BR (ie all his earnings are taxed) on his bar job. When he had 2 part time jobs he split the tax code between the 2 jobs as he didn't earn more than the personal allowance on his combined wages.
