Want to find a part-time bar job but already have a desk job, what if they ask me for a CV

Hi there,
Hope it is not a weird situation. I want to work part time in a bar/pub as I really miss the interaction with people (being WFH alone for almost 3 years), and I do like making cocktails and pulling a pint (was bartending at uni during weekend. I had great time and made so many friends.). So I want to find a part time bar/pub job. However, most of them ask for a CV which my desk job CV is totally irrelevant. How cab I get over this hurdle and find a part time bar/pub job. I live in London if it matters.

Any suggestion welcome. Thank you very much in advance.

Easy. Make a bar job CV where your bar experience is at the top, extend the dates by a bit if you can to make this experience more relevant, play it up as much as you can.

Below under previous experience put the other work.

I have CVs for a few areas that I work in and I just treat the current role as priority and then put all my other roles underneath to show I've got a complete work history.

At the top I put the tagline as "experienced bar staff seeking new part-time opportunity' or 'experienced medical secretary seeking full-time role"

Etc. etc.

@milkmaiden - this is very useful and detailed advice. Will do the cv this weekend. Thank you very much.

To be fair, my DD tax code did alter when when she got the second job - something like the personal allowance dropped to 5,000. It was all very weird and DD couldn’t work out why she didn’t have as much money as she expected. The HMRC had made a mistake and had to pay her back- but the trouble was caused by the second job

I've recently had similar - I have done a few shifts for a temporary second job. HMRC sent a letter having calculated the temp shifts as if I was to be full time employed on top of the original job. They then adjusted the tax code (as I think if I had been earning 2 X full time salaries I've be nudged into higher tax band). I just went online and corrected the estimated income from the second job and they had it all sorted and put back on the correct tax code within a couple of days.

Yes, I think that was it. They thought the job was full time on top of her normal full time job…

I was a registered professional by day and worked in a pub in the evenings. I got the job whilst chatting to the land lord, complaining I was broke because he'd taken all my money ( in exchange for beer). I asked if he'd employ me to redress the balance. I started 5 days later!

MuthaHubbard · 11/06/2022 11:19

Every job I've applied for I've tweaked my CV a little to make it fit that role a little better.
Just re desk job; some 'day' jobs want to know if you have a second job in case of conflict if interest etc - if I did this I'd have to declare to my current employer. I would just check this with your desk job boss/HR

If you read a few Bar Staff ads, they are all basically looking for the same qualities. positive can-do attitude, confident, warm and welcoming personality and good communication skills.

You probably need/use those in your desk job to, so you have transferable skills, plus previous bar work experience. You seem like a good candidate to me.

SophieHasOneQuestion · 11/06/2022 12:08

@MuthaHubbard - thank you so much for the reminder.
My desk job is very different from the bar job so don't think there will be conflict of interest. I am main purpose is to have more human interactions which is serious lacking for an extrovert like me. It is for my mental health really.
London can be a very lonely city.
