Neighbour has just put up a wind chime

It's really irritating, needless to add. Plus I work from home. I need to ask them to take it down don't I? I'm a bit worried about this as the husband is definitely aggressive and apparently drinks.

It's going day and night, though I wear earplugs at night anyway because the husband is a tradesman who makes a lot of noise in the early hours with his van, and they often shout.

They're generally inconsiderate with noise (the woman is the worst, she's unemployed and likes to conduct her private shouted telephone calls with the other person on speakerphone), and I've never done anything about it, other than passive aggressive comments. I can't believe it's bloody wind chimes making me consider confronting them.

They do rent their house, only mentioning (and not wanting to drop feed) as the estate agent who manages the property might be a better or safer first port of call?

So, popped by my neighbours who now thinks I'm mad for asking if my wind chimes annoyed them. Invited me into her garden where she has three! I don't think we're near enough to bother each other. Which doesn't help you at all OP, sorry! But I would echo try to make some kind of a relationship so that you've banked some goodwill.

OP, passive aggressive mutterings will achieve absolutely nothing.

I know! I couldn't even say with certainty they've heard.

Oh believe me, I deeply sympathise. I moved house once because other half of the semi played soul music morning, noon and night every single effing day!

Wickywickyyow · 07/06/2022 13:29

I mean, you're at home at home too, maybe she thinks you're unemployed?

I've worked at home for 13 years, I bet most people think I'm a SAHM/ unemployed.

I said hello when they first moved in and told her I'm a teacher and work from home (not as a warning I should probably say!)., so they do know.

It's gone beyond trying to befriend them. I can hear her now, at her garden table, though I've moved to the opposite end of the house.

If it was just the wind chimes and there were no other issues, and they were pleasant, considerate neighbours then I don't know if the chimes would be annoying. Perhaps not.

alber · 07/06/2022 13:45

That was to @Sirius3030

alber · 07/06/2022 13:46

Thanks everyone! It feels better to have been able to discuss it!

They probably wouldn’t. When my husband snores I want to kill him. When my beautiful Maine Coone cat snores (incredibly loudly) I think it’s adorable.

oh. I’ve just realIsed that I might like my cat more than my husband 😂

Wickywickyyow · 07/06/2022 13:50

It's annoying when OPs name change half way through a thread!

Anyway I meant, she might work from home too. Since you, from from outside, are at home all day too.

OctaviaC74 · 07/06/2022 13:52

Former neighbour put up a wind chime, telling us how relaxing they found them, i went round and using a nail file, cut the cord when they were out.

Whilst on the school run she mentioned that something had chewed through the string, i replied with "Yes we had this too, apparently 'chimes attract rodents..."

They never put them back up again.

She definitely doesn't work. I know far more about her private life than I'd like to from the shouted speakerphone calls.

This thread has made me smile. Sorry op but our 'neighbour' started cutting silage at 4am this morning. His tractor has been thundering up and down for hours. Still I suppose it masked the sound of cockerels from the other side of the road

Who needs sleep 😀

🤣

I would happily swap. I grew up in a rural area! Small village, where the business of all was known, but I do miss it.

Strangely that wouldn't bother me as much as inconsiderate, unnecessary noise like drunken passersby shouting, cars blasting music as they pass in the small hours, etc.
I lived in a house backing onto train tracks for years and the noise didn't bother me at all.

Worth checking if he is allowed a work van at home. Nd here had 5 vans here (contractors) dh emailed the company and they stopped parking here.. 5 vans sat idling at 6 am was a head fuck 6 days a week..

Checking with who? OP has absolutely no right to see a contract made privately between two independent parties. Similarly, the estate agents don't owe her anything. She could pay for the property deeds I suppose, but it's hardly guaranteed, and enforcing it would be ludicrous.

Someone going to work early in the morning isn't a crime.

WildFlowerBees · 07/06/2022 15:23

My neighbour sits in his inflatable hot tub with his noisy family and their karaoke machine until the early hours. I think I'm going to get several wind chimes, really tinkly ones and the large annoying bamboo ones.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 07/06/2022 15:35

@OctaviaC74 - that is inspired blaming rodents!

I have very cute wood mice who climb into the bird feeder but the other evening, say about 6.30pm I saw a large rat in a residential area sauntering outside its house (person obvs!), right outside the window! Quite brazen!

Not my comment but I imagine:

OP saying she makes passive aggressive comments.

That's when I've been at my wits end with the noise and I've been unable to concentrate or get much done. Something in a low voice that I don't know they'd have even heard, when I've gone to hang out washing, for example. If they've heard, and realised I'm talking about them, it's had no impact, obviously, and I've been worried afterwards about the husband coming here. It's only been something about how noisy it is today, or some such.

-OP commenting on their employment status.

I've explained the reasoning behind that twice. Not something I've said to the neighbours.

  • OP wanting to complain to landlord without even speaking to them.

I've explained about the husband's aggression and drinking in the OP. His own wife is afraid.

  • The level of noise described not really sounding like it would be actionable.

It is, and it's impacting on all of us. My children have their GCSEs this year also. I've worn earplugs for two years, sometimes even during the day, at times. I use a brown noise app sometimes etc. We can't use our own garden! Etc

I'm not judging, OP, merely explaining why some posters feel you are perhaps being OTT. I don't think keep repeating your answers will change that impression.

Personally I don't think it matters, it's bothering you so it's a problem.

donquixotedelamancha · 07/06/2022 15:39

OP- it's hard to be sure, with the name change, but I don't think you replied saying what you want the landlord to do.

sandraven · 07/06/2022 15:51

OP- it's hard to be sure, with the name change, but I don't think you replied saying what you want the landlord to do.

I name changed for the mammogram thread then forgot to change back.
I did say why I thought the estate agent might be safer/better as they will be used to dealing with noise complaints. The reason I'm repeating is that I'm saying I don't feel safe confronting them because of the aggressive husband (who I've heard roaring at her and the children first hand) who even his wife is afraid of. You must be braver than me if you think it's a good idea to approach people like that!

It's not the landlord but the estate agent I'd be contacting. I've left them our telephone number in the past as the owners wanted to discuss something in the property deeds, and they seem quite helpful and said to call if we had any problems with the new tenants.

I'm going to think on it. I've worn earplugs for two years overnight (which I'd rather not do) so I'm not one to act rashly.

Sorry but I have a wind chime and if anyone asked me to remove it I would tell them where to go. Maybe go to work in an office its not the neighbours fault you work from home. Unreasonable noise is one thing but a wind chime ?

LauraNicolaides · 07/06/2022 16:14

Landlords (and their agents) do not exist to police the vehicles and garden decorations of their tenants! (And neither should they.)

It's a bit patronising to suggest raising problems like this through the landlord, like going to the grown-ups. The OP needs to actually speak to her neighbours.

It's definitely not just the wind chime. The wind chime was just the final straw, I think. I've mentioned most in my OP so as not to drip feed.

Wind chimes are VVVVVVVV unreasonable unless you live 20 miles from anyone else. Bloody awful things.

sandraven · 07/06/2022 16:19

@LauraNicolaides

Long thread so understandable, but I've explained why I don't feel safe confronting them in person. I wouldn't advise anybody to confront someone who was aggressive, especially after drinking.
