Neighbour has just put up a wind chime

It's really irritating, needless to add. Plus I work from home. I need to ask them to take it down don't I? I'm a bit worried about this as the husband is definitely aggressive and apparently drinks.

It's going day and night, though I wear earplugs at night anyway because the husband is a tradesman who makes a lot of noise in the early hours with his van, and they often shout.

They're generally inconsiderate with noise (the woman is the worst, she's unemployed and likes to conduct her private shouted telephone calls with the other person on speakerphone), and I've never done anything about it, other than passive aggressive comments. I can't believe it's bloody wind chimes making me consider confronting them.

They do rent their house, only mentioning (and not wanting to drop feed) as the estate agent who manages the property might be a better or safer first port of call?

Wind chimes being irritating aside, some of your comments have left me uncomfortable. What does the woman being unemployed have to do with her making loud phone calls?

I've addressed that up thread a couple of times. It was to explain why she's at home all day etc. I wouldn't judge anyone for being unemployed.

NoObviousDog · 07/06/2022 13:08

If I ruled the world wind-chimes would be banned. Such pointless, unnecessary, maddening noise - ching ching ching ching ching!

What's the point of them if not to enrage your neighbours?

If you are reading this thread and have wind-chimes, explain yourself!

FavouritePi · 07/06/2022 13:10

How long have you given it with the wind chimes, OP? I realised our neighbours had them when we moved in and after a couple of weeks to a month, I got used to it and my brain sort of drowned out the noise.

TenoringBehind · 07/06/2022 13:12

This would drive me crazy. You could try asking nicely. I think there’s a danger it would backfire and that rather than take it down they’d put up another 10 to piss you off.

balalake · 07/06/2022 13:12

I cannot imagine the estate agent doing anything if rent is being paid.

donquixotedelamancha · 07/06/2022 13:13

What does 'hard work' mean in this context?

Not my comment but I imagine:

  • OP saying she makes passive aggressive comments.
  • OP commenting on their employment status.
  • OP wanting to complain to landlord without even speaking to them.
  • The level of noise described not really sounding like it would be actionable.

Don't be too sure. DS and his GF emailed the LL of neighbours of theirs who were having loud parties, leaving their dog barking all day long and not cleaning up after it - the situation improved massively.

donquixotedelamancha · 07/06/2022 13:15

I don't think the estate agent would laugh about the noise impacting on neighbours. They're probably best placed to deal with it, given I've no idea how the neighbours might react.

What exactly is it you think the landlord will do?

See my post above.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 07/06/2022 13:18

Funny this, NDNs are renting and have wind chimes and also one of them is very loud on the phone/video calls in her office (adjacent to my bedroom).

Also lots of loud parties and last Saturday I could hear a man talking very loudly at 4am in their garden (at end of their garden) and they then moved it indoors.

Muezza · 07/06/2022 13:20

For goodness sake, why would you contact the landlord before just going and knocking on the door!? The worst that will happen is they will say 'no, I won't take down the wind chime'. That is when you can start thinking of different options.

I rent, and if a neighbour contacted my landlord about something before approaching me I would be furious.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 07/06/2022 13:21

@rocksonrocks depending on the type of house you live in (me, Victorian cottage style) then noise can travel very easily through walls.

In my case, it's a loud American woman (nothing against Americans!). Funny that all the other neighbours before were generally much quieter, even the kids. And then you excuse the kids because they're kids.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 07/06/2022 13:22

I think you need to take inspiration from The Office.

I honestly don't think it would be possible to befriend the woman. She's the main source of the daytime shouting and noise. The other neighbours are fine, it's a quiet residential area, or rather it was.

It’s really tricky isn’t it, as what noise is excessive to some people wouldn’t bother others. What is ‘reasonable’ is a bit subjective.

If you live in a residential area you have to expect noise. For me, wind chimes and phone calls wouldn’t particularly bother me, but 60sFM radio would. My neighbour has a wind chime. I hear it but it doesn’t bother me. A bloke a few doors down worked in his garage with the radio on full blast and it irritated me.

A friend of mine lives in a first floor flat. The neighbours below complained to my friend’s landlord about the sound of them walking around the flat. The landlord, whilst sympathising queried whether they expected them to levitate.

Think again about trying to build a relationship with them, even if you’ve got to fake it. People will accommodate each other if they connect with them.

It doesn’t sound like they are making the kind of noise that could get them evicted. Maybe they are? Complain to the agent about the wind chime and the neighbours will probably put up two more.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 07/06/2022 13:26

I'll see your windchimes (my NDNs have this too) and raise you with sauna, loud hippy style music when sauna is on...

one of the NDNs went on a retreat recently...

I seriously believe that 'some' not all new age hippy types can be bloody pain in the arse when it comes to being considerate about others, because, 'it's all about me isn't it?'

The cracker last Saturday was at lunchtime presumably the man who was shouting at 4am was sitting on their seating (which overlooks my bedroom window) and glanced up at my window. Bare in mind that I had said nothing...

alber · 07/06/2022 13:26

Not my comment but I imagine:

OP saying she makes passive aggressive comments.

That's when I've been at my wits end with the noise and I've been unable to concentrate or get much done. Something in a low voice that I don't know they'd have even heard, when I've gone to hang out washing, for example. If they've heard, and realised I'm talking about them, it's had no impact, obviously, and I've been worried afterwards about the husband coming here. It's only been something about how noisy it is today, or some such.

-OP commenting on their employment status.

I've explained the reasoning behind that twice. Not something I've said to the neighbours.

  • OP wanting to complain to landlord without even speaking to them.

I've explained about the husband's aggression and drinking in the OP. His own wife is afraid.

  • The level of noise described not really sounding like it would be actionable.

It is, and it's impacting on all of us. My children have their GCSEs this year also. I've worn earplugs for two years, sometimes even during the day, at times. I use a brown noise app sometimes etc. We can't use our own garden! Etc

Oops, off to have a word with my neighbours to see if mine annoy them

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 07/06/2022 13:27

@SpringCalling - I think if your wind chimes are down the other end of the garden (of one DB's ex girlfriends has this) then they're not that offensive.

Hanging right outside your patio in an area with breezes. It can be like Chinese water torture.

Wickywickyyow · 07/06/2022 13:29

I mean, you're at home at home too, maybe she thinks you're unemployed?

I've worked at home for 13 years, I bet most people think I'm a SAHM/ unemployed.

7eleven · 07/06/2022 13:32

OP, passive aggressive mutterings will achieve absolutely nothing.

I have several friends who are at home all day, they just don’t work 9-5…
Wind chimes are annoying. I hope you can find a resolution.

TroysMammy · 07/06/2022 13:32

Are they wooden ones and do you live in Swansea? I saw a woman in the Range buying some on the weekend and thought "glad you're not my neighbour" .

My wind chime is hung in a quiet ie not windy spot. It barely chimes throughout the day. Just watching it now and it’s barely moving. Is it really worse than radio 3 being played by the deaf lady next door, or the loud phone calls from the loud lady two doors away? Or the lawnmower, barking dog, traffic, lions roaring in the local zoo?

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/06/2022 13:34
