Well, Big has not aged that well…

Watching it with DD(10) after finding it in a charity shop, and I do NOT remember half of the stuff in it 😮

The casual use of “bullshit”, comment on a woman that “If you even say hello to her, she’ll wrap her legs around you so tight you’ll beg for mercy”, not to mention the female lead asking for a sleepover and Tom Hanks’ character saying “Sure, but I want to be on top…”

Any other films ruined introducing them to your kids?

Grease how on earth did they think the 30 something cast would pass for teenagers😂

woodhill · 05/06/2022 20:48

When you are a kid it's hard to understand that the teenagers were from the 50s. Just thought it was American teenagers of the time itms

mypinkslippers · 05/06/2022 20:59

I love BIG. I always thought it was strange she still kind of pursued him even though he was a child, once she found out.

Casual use of bullshit? Really don't see the issue there.

As for the woman at work, well if she would, what's the problem? So she liked sex with colleagues?

I saw a film last year that was modern where they made a whole joke out of a baby holding a dildo and I found that worse than anything that's aged to be honest.

Yes, it was an A, and then a PG when it came out on video in 1987. The BBFC has an interesting page about Grease (and the attitudes of the film classifiers of the time). I remember thinking as a young teenager, when I first saw it all the way through rather than just clips and then dancing to some of the music at dance school, that there was a lot of social commentary in it (probably not in those exact terms) and not that it was just a fun romance. But I think I first watched it through with my mother who could give some context. It ought to be a 12 rating, IMO. I wouldn't expect it to "age well" though, as it is a 1978 film based on a 1971 set in 1958-1959. So very much a period piece twice over.

I watched Big with my DC who are 12 and 9. It didn't age well at all.

Top gun, on the other hand, they found hilarious. All that men covered in oil under orange lighting. They just laughed at it.
(And I noticed that the only woman in it has a man's name, Charlie! It's a seriously homoerotic film)

Alright Quentin.

Anyone seen the Dirty Dancing last dance with the muppet theme behind it? I found it funny(did not spit out my tea or anything)

You would like "shreds" - google any band and shreds, you will love that.

mumwon · 05/06/2022 21:26

I don't know if anybody else has mentioned it - but "Junior" I use to think it was hilarious. I started watching it again a few weeks ago - ye gods! it was so wrong in so many ways.

Is that the one where a man gets pregnant?

And I turned off Basil the great mouse detective when in the first 15 seconds there was a vole doing burlesque. Which is not something I recall from childhood!

Goodness! Not a cartoon vole doing burlesque dancing 😱 I hope you got therapy.

Itsallaboutcake · 05/06/2022 21:56

Like a PP above I recently watched Ghostbusters. I made the mistake of thinking it was something my 9 year old would like but there was so much overt sexuality and innuendo, it all just felt SO wrong - particularly the scene mentioned by the PP with Bill Murray and the student - bleurgh.

Such a shame though as was a brilliant idea.

DH and I watched High Fidelity last night.

We we’re both shocked at what a total arsehole John Cusack’s character has become since we last saw it, and what a rapey little bastard he was as a teenager. Awful.

His character is supposed to be a complete arsehole!

Well, yes, but an endearing arsehole, who’s a nice guy underneath.

All we could see was pure arsehole!

Don't forget Dan Akroyd getting erm...fondled by a ghost. Apparently I kept asking my older brother what was going on which amused him and his then girlfriend who had smuggled me in to watch the film at the cinema.
