Well, Big has not aged that well…

Watching it with DD(10) after finding it in a charity shop, and I do NOT remember half of the stuff in it 😮

The casual use of “bullshit”, comment on a woman that “If you even say hello to her, she’ll wrap her legs around you so tight you’ll beg for mercy”, not to mention the female lead asking for a sleepover and Tom Hanks’ character saying “Sure, but I want to be on top…”

Any other films ruined introducing them to your kids?

I watched Ghostbusters last night for the first time in 30+ years. The scene near the start between Billy Crystal's character and his female student made me feel very uncomfortable.

BorderlineHappy · 05/06/2022 17:59

I love Dirty Dancing but even when I saw it first I thought it was weird that it had all these sex scenes and the older woman having an abortion.
It didn't add up.

bringon2020 ah thank you, he's really into Heartbreaker (the books) and I think was a bit disappointed!

Bill Murray?

Op, I thought you were talking about Big in SATC!

I thought this too until I got to the bit about Tom Hanks! I couldn't figure out why you'd be watching SATC with your 10yo. 🤣

I read your post to my DC1 who is 12, and he loved it!

I think stories like Heartstopper are normalizing gay love stories, which or great!

Lesperance · 05/06/2022 18:58

Back to the Future, the first film, has an attempted date rape in it and no suitable come uppance for the character, it's just sort of, the girl gets rescued, the end, kind of thing, which I found disturbing when I was watching it again.

PerrinAybara · 05/06/2022 19:00

Ah yes. Bill Murray. Sorry.

moggerhanger · 05/06/2022 19:03

I remembered loving the series Quantum Leap when I was a kid, so thought I'd try the DC with it. Switched off part way through the first episode. The attitudes to women made my skin crawl! Sad because it's a great premise.

mmmmmmghturep · 05/06/2022 19:11

Mannequin has just started on ITVBe

lolanthe · 05/06/2022 19:13

What's the age of ' Baby' in Dirty Dancing supposed to be? I was never sure.

Catnuzzle · 05/06/2022 15:07

We did Retro Sunday during lockdown and introduced our kids to loads of 'classics', I think Moneypit shocked me most, horrible rapey stuff, passed off as humour.

Really? I don't remember it like that at all!!

autienotnaughty · 05/06/2022 19:20

MonkeyPuddle · 05/06/2022 15:43

I thought this was going to be about Big Cook, Little Cook.

I thought sex and the city!!

BorderlineHappy · 05/06/2022 19:22

I think Baby was supposed to be about 17.
She was off to collage after the summer.
And I think Johnny was supposed to be in his 20s

Isn't she 18? I think it says in the opening monologue. Not sure how old jonny is but at least early twenties

Highlyquestionablehoumous · 05/06/2022 19:25

I always thought Baby was 18 as it was the summer before she went to college wasn't it, so she was either 18 or about to turn so.

User280905 · 05/06/2022 19:30

Teen Wolf. I thought it was about basketball and watched it with ds8 during lockdown. I was very wrong.

Well, he did get thumped and then ended up in a pile of manure...

I mean, I realise it's not formal justice but it'd be pretty hard to get a conviction for what he actually did nowadays.

BeautifulDragon · 05/06/2022 19:32

I watched Problem Child with my kids during lockdown. I honestly couldn't believe what I watching, it's awful.

Especially the part where the escaped convict basically rapes the step mom, but she likes it 🙈

I loved the film as a kid.

mmmmmmghturep · 05/06/2022 19:37

The character Roxy is badly sexually harassed in Mannequin.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 05/06/2022 19:45

I don't think Dirty Dancing has aged badly at all! Yes the abortion etc is shocking but it's all shown as the fault of the guy, she isn't blamed for it. And Baby wants to get with Johnny, she's the instigator. The age gap isn't that big, it's not like she's underage or anything.

I just IMDB'd this to read the Parental guidance and apparently the character follows the woman into the kitchen and is 'overcome with passion' 🙄.....wtf

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 05/06/2022 19:52

He looks haggard and is also up for sexual abuse and his shows cancelled as well. I used to watch sex and the city when it first came out back in the day as there was nothing like it but haven't watched the movies or new shows either as some things best left remembered as they were and I used to love it back in my late 20's

Cotherstone · 05/06/2022 20:01

We’ve moved onto Dinnerladies and even that, written by a woman, has an opening joke with one man propositioning a young female character so that he can “sort his head out”!

Watching almost anything older than about 5 years ago with a pre-teen girl has suddenly got a lot more challenging…

I was 7 or 8 when Grease was released in the UK and almost all the other girls in my school class saw it at the cinema. My parents wouldn't take me or let me go with anyone else, which at the time made me feel really left out. However when I finally got round to watching Grease a year or so ago I thought my parents probably made the right call for 7 year old me! It would probably have gone over my head as a child but the lyrics of some of the songs weren't great for little children to be singing (although of course we did..."Tell me more tell me more did you get very far?" etc)
