Just getting really interested in the idea of manifestation as I've heard it can be really powerful. Can anyone recommend a good but very 'readable' book on the subject?
TIA

Not another thread about this fucking woo nonsense. Jeez.

The most well known book is The Secret by Rhonda Byrne.

I think people making threads about manifestation is manifesting more threads about manifestation!

Okay, wasn't quite expecting that reaction and svoided aibu for that reason but each to their own. It's not "woo" just an idea I found interesting.

it very much is woo!

Spohn · 05/06/2022 10:30

Ffs.

hepaticanobilis · 05/06/2022 10:34

It seems to be peddled by 20-something Instagram "coaches" with no coaching training, at £455 for an online course and a pretty workbook... 🙄

Of course it's woo. Or do you think people who are struggling in life due to their circumstances are just not manifesting the right things?

BertieBotts · 05/06/2022 10:50

Please don't. It can lead to some very damaging and uncomfortable thought patterns at worst and at best it can cause you to waste time and opportunities, not actually doing things in real life because you're waiting for them to "manifest".

You'd be better off reading something like this: www.amazon.co.uk/Getting-Things-Done-Stress-free-Productivity/dp/0349408947/

Have a think about what attracts you to this kind of magical thinking. Do you feel you struggle more than others in life? You might want to look into neurodiversity instead. Do you have unresolved trauma from past abuse? You might want to look into trauma-informed therapy. Do you want to make big changes in your life but don't know how? Look at the above or try to work out your goals and make them into small, manageable steps.

As a former manifester and outright woo-ster, I can say with hindsight that this is an absolutely wonderful way to avoid dealing with reality.

Haha this.

ThorsBedazzler · 05/06/2022 11:01

I find things manifest when you work hard to make them happen.

"If you trust in yourself. . .and believe in your dreams. . .and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy." STP

On a spiritual level: as a Christian who dabbled in this in the past, I would avoid. It often works but generally comes with a catch. The universe is a creation, not the Creator and can't grant your wishes like a genie. There are spiritual powers at play with manifestation, and I am convinced that they are not for our benefit.

From a purely psychological perspective, it can indeed lead to very damaging thought patterns as mentioned above. Youtube has many horror stories of people getting sucked into it and almost losing their minds. The terror of having the slightest negative thought has been known to hold people in horrible mental captivity and lead to OCD-like behaviour.

As a Christian, I ask for God's will in my life. However, for those who don't believe as I do, I suggest making practical plans based on ideas you may have, using a healthy dose of optimism and see what doors open that way.

I know my perspective may seem either very woo or very preachy, but this is something I think is worth researching all sides to.

Stringervest · 05/06/2022 11:16

There is so much privilege bound up in the idea that you can manifest something and "the universe" will make it appear. Tell that to the people who have lost their homes in Ukraine or starving communities in Africa, they'll be so thrilled to have a solution to all their problems.

CPL593H · 05/06/2022 11:24

You may as well wish on the first star, at least that's harmless. Terrible things happen to decent people and the truly evil seem as likely to die in their beds as not. It is how life has always been. We all know that.

Nothing wrong with encouraging positivity in yourself and putting your mind to changing the things you can for the better, but the idea that 'the universe' is ready to do your bidding is demonstrably nuts and most unhealthy.

The OP was just asking in Chat for book recommendations and has instead been instantly flamed. We are all entitled to our own opinions and interests surely?

I'm open minded and have read a couple of books out of interest. Not all manifestation theories are based on 'magic' or 'greed', mostly it's positive thinking and changing your mindset. Positive Mental Attitude is well respected in Sports Psychology. OP, 'Manifest' by Roxie Nafousi is quite good, so is 'The Source' by Dr Tara Swart' a world renowned neuroscientist.

Thanks for your reply. I'm also a Christian, practising. I honestly thought the laws of attraction were more about a positive mindset than anything else.

Thank you @LizzyElane. I was genuinely shocked at some of the responses on here and as I said deliberately avoided posting in aibu for that reason.
I just said I was interested in learning more, that's all. People are entitled to differing opinions but when somebody asks a genuine question I wonder why some respond unpleasantly on the thread...

Thanks to everyone else who gave helpful /food for thought responses.

I think a lot of the unpleasantness is due to a good proportion of ‘practitioners’ or coaches or whatever they want to call themselves are essentially a pyramid scheme of coaches training coaches how to coach and by coaching I actually mean rinsing vulnerable people of money they can often ill afford to loose.

I do believe in a positive mindset/cbt/hypnosis but a lot of the folk mixed up in it are charlatans faking it till they make it (with your money).

Brogues · 05/06/2022 12:04

I would say if you are ever tempted to spend money on course to do at least a google search of their name and see if anything comes up… like a Tattle Life thread for instance!

The most well known book is The Secret by Rhonda Byrne.

I utterly loathe that book, after DH was given a copy by a colleague just after being diagnosed with cancer. Yup, DH should have eliminated the cancer by wishing it away. I so wanted to shove the book up his colleague's arse.

yellowsmileyface · 05/06/2022 12:30

Doesn't the fact that you've primarily gotten responses you really weren't expecting tell you something about the validity of the law of attraction?

Try Genevieve Davis, she writes in a very approachable way that makes sense to me. You have to be prepared to change your thinking though.
