Would you pay £7 for poached eggs on toast?

We have quite an upmarket garden centre near us. It’s lovely to look round but I definitely wouldn’t buy my plants there! The food in the cafe is lovely but a bit pricey. I was looking at the breakfast menu & all the egg dishes came with something else eg smashed avocado, eggs Benedict etc. I prefer my eggs plain so messaged to ask if they could just do poached eggs on toast. Bit shocked by £7! I know everything has gone up but would you be happy to pay that?

Depends. Is it 2 large organic poached eggs on freshly sliced toasted bloomer with locally produced butter in a lovely environment with waitress service? or 2 medium supermarket eggs on a couple of bits of kingsmill, counter service and a sticky table?

Sockmonkeysloth · 04/06/2022 13:01

What are the prices of the other items on the breakfast menu?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/06/2022 13:02

In that context, if I was out for a leisurely breakfast and a mooch, and was asking for something off-menu, yes. But then I don’t eat meat, and am used to pay the same for a grilled cauliflower steak (!!!) as my meat eating companions paid for a shank of lamb.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/06/2022 13:03

Yes. Food in a cafe doesn't cost the same as just the cost of the ingredients. You're paying for all the overheads. When I eat out it's to enjoy the atmosphere as well as the food, otherwise I'd just eat at home.

anniegun · 04/06/2022 13:03

Sounds pretty reasonable assuming it is good quality and the service is goo

NohoHank · 04/06/2022 13:06

Sounds completely reasonable to me. Also the same as pre covid/inflation prices. You don't have to eat out if you don't want to pay for the food, service, venue, overheads etc.

DSGR · 04/06/2022 13:06

Yes I’d pay that if it’s good quality and I like the venue. £10 with a coffee feels reasonable for breakfast out. Though personally I’d be having the avocado too!

Overthebow · 04/06/2022 13:08

Good quality and quantity then yes.

Hatinafield · 04/06/2022 13:09

For the experience of sitting somewhere nice for an hour and a half, a meal included, yes.

BattenburgDonkey · 04/06/2022 13:09

Unless everything else on the menu is dirt cheap yep that sounds about right. I’d assume their full English is around the £9.95 mark.

Carrotten · 04/06/2022 13:09

Yes that seems reasonable especially as its off menu

RandomQuest · 04/06/2022 13:10

I think that’s actually quite cheap for a nice cafe…

dammit88 · 04/06/2022 13:11

Yes I would ... as someone above said its not just about the cost of the ingredients.

Barkingmadhouse · 04/06/2022 13:20

Seems reasonable - especially for a garden centre

Metabigot · 04/06/2022 13:20

Paid £11 for a tiny bit of toast one poached egg and a tomato based sauce recently. Was expecting double the portion size so felt royally ripped off.

Food prices eating out are going mental

GiveMeNovocain · 04/06/2022 13:22

I would but if you think it's too much then head elsewhere.

cakeorwine · 04/06/2022 13:23

I wouldn't pay that. But other people would. Depends on how much you value £7 vs doing it at home.

lightand · 04/06/2022 13:24

Just about.

You went off menu. Plus you are in a lovely place by the sounds of it. Things cost.

Though I do think there will be a price tipping point at some point. For most people.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 04/06/2022 13:24

That’s very cheap for round here

To be fair food prices are going up everywhere, as is cooking oil, gas and electric, staff wages are having to rise accordingly. It’s not like hospitality are taking the mick generally. But your £11 meal does sound OTT, wouldn’t have been happy with that either.

ConfessionsOfAShopper · 04/06/2022 13:28

Yes that sounds really reasonable to me - food and a coffee for probably under £10 in a nice setting…sounds great!

chunkymandarincoulis · 04/06/2022 13:29

My local garden centre is equally pricey when it comes to plants etc. Their full breakfast including tea or coffee is £8.

So £7 for egg on toast is plain daft.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 04/06/2022 13:30

Sounds reasonable. Some has to buy the eggs, bread, store it correctly then make it for you. How much did you want to pay?!

balalake · 04/06/2022 13:33

No, in your circumstance I'd have just had a coffee or tea.

AnnaKar · 04/06/2022 13:37

‘We’ voted for Brexit. One reason given was that British workers deserve to earn more and not be undercut by ‘foreign’ cheap labour.

This is the result, higher wages have to be paid for by someone…is it really a surprise that it is ‘us’!
