Would you pay £7 for poached eggs on toast?

We have quite an upmarket garden centre near us. It’s lovely to look round but I definitely wouldn’t buy my plants there! The food in the cafe is lovely but a bit pricey. I was looking at the breakfast menu & all the egg dishes came with something else eg smashed avocado, eggs Benedict etc. I prefer my eggs plain so messaged to ask if they could just do poached eggs on toast. Bit shocked by £7! I know everything has gone up but would you be happy to pay that?

Yes, but that's because I live in London, and we don't blink at ridiculous pricing here.

I'd feel differently if it was £7 for eggs on toast at a greasy spoon in the middle of nowhere.

Smartsub · 04/06/2022 15:12

Anywhere "nice" you're paying as much for the service and the location/setting as for the food. To get anything serviced to you on a plate for £7 seems about what you'd expect to pay to me, especially when you've asked for something that's not on the menu - the reason they don't serve it simple is so that they can "add value" and make it worth their while.

‘We’ voted for Brexit. One reason given was that British workers deserve to earn more and not be undercut by ‘foreign’ cheap labour.

This is the result, higher wages have to be paid for by someone…is it really a surprise that it is ‘us’!

There's always someone who has to crowbar Brexit into any old thread, isn't there?😂

ivykaty44 · 04/06/2022 15:18

chunkymandarincoulis It’s woven into our country now, it’s what we have to live with unfortunately. For some they can’t forgive or forget how things have turned out

Blowyourowntrumpet · 04/06/2022 15:18

No. I wouldn't pay that

Bringonsummer19 · 04/06/2022 15:19

Would love to, would be closer to £13 near me

girlmom21 · 04/06/2022 15:21

People who are saying it sounds cheap are talking nonsense.
That's expensive for poached eggs on toast, but was it similarly priced to other menu items?

You'll probably find you were charged whatever they normally charge for 'additional' items so each item was priced individually, hence it being more expensive that you'd thought.

People who are saying it sounds cheap are talking nonsense

Or they live in an expensive area.

roarfeckingroarr · 04/06/2022 15:30

Yes, that would be cheap around here (London).

LaurieFairyCake · 04/06/2022 15:36

Normal price for me (London zone 2/3)

IncompleteSenten · 04/06/2022 15:37

No.

purplesequins · 04/06/2022 15:39

in a sit down eatery? yes, absolutely.

skyeisthelimit · 04/06/2022 15:41

£5-£6 is about what you would pay around here for 2 egg on toast, and we are a fairly cheap area for food. It sounds a lot for what it is though but prices will always go up though as wages go up. The NMW increase was 59pph in April, and cafes have to cover the cost of soaring utility bills as well.

I think the last time I ate lunch out, a couple of weeks ago, we paid £7.50 for a 2 poached egg with salmon, and £6.50 for a 3 egg ham & cheese omelette. 2 poached egg on toast was £5

It was worth every penny as it was a treat and I didn't have to make it myself.

Dodoassociated · 04/06/2022 15:51

7.45 for Eggs Avo in the heart of Belsize Park, Hampstead. I pay that regularly but I pay happily because they are excellent with allergies, friendly staff and a wonderful family-run business.

mrsm43s · 04/06/2022 15:58

Cheaper end of normal for me in an affluent area of the South East. Would be the price at a greasy spoon, more than that price in a garden centre or nice eaterie. Mind you, for that you'll get two large free-range eggs beautifully poached served on toasted sourdough spread with real butter, probably with a handful of something green sprinkled on top. It wouldn't be insipid battery eggs on top of white sliced spread with cheap margarine.

Sunshineboo · 04/06/2022 16:13

yes but i would expect them to be nice

Sofasogood1 · 04/06/2022 16:31

Yes I would especially if I was treating it as a day out but not spending any money in the centre and buying things elsewhere. So rude!

AuntieMarys · 04/06/2022 16:35

It would have to be golden yoked eggs and sourdough

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 04/06/2022 17:41

Sofasogood it’s not rude! I don’t buy plants there but I never said I don’t spend any other money apart from the cafe. They have a lovely gift shop.

100% sure they would be quality eggs on “ artisan” toast with butter. Will treat myself next week when DD’s back at school.

Nothingiseverything · 04/06/2022 13:39

No, not for 2 eggs and 2 bits of bread. I'd pay £4.50 tops. They can't charge it if no ones pays it.

£4.50?! In Morrisons cafe maybe

Crankley · 04/06/2022 18:03

It seems reasonable to me. To those saying they can cook it cheaper at home, I assume you don't have to pay for a cook and soneone to deliver it to your table?
