Did anyone else ever wonder how come we have a German royal family here in England?

I did, and idly googling have found out the answer.

They just didn't want a Catholic monarch! Fascinating stuff:

Did you get taught this in school? I didn't.

I did, at home anyway, as family are Catholic. Blame Henry VIII for starting this bigotry.

AssignedBlobbyAtBirth · 03/06/2022 22:40

I didn't get taught it in school but was told by family (Catholic)

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 03/06/2022 22:42

It's mad though isn't it? Rule by divine right but you can just swap countries as you wish Confused

'Our' royal family turned forrin in 1066, but in any case had a load of european input before then with regard to the Danes etc

Scissor · 03/06/2022 22:45

Dutch before that. William of Orange.. Battle of the Boyne marching will be soon in Northern Ireland, that's a quarter of the UK .. with a serious lack of any understanding about the history around the general UK population

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 03/06/2022 22:47

That's true actually. I did know that the last time there was an "English" king was 1066.

I'm trying not to sound too Forest Gump about the whole thing but really this is a mad, mad way to rule, draw boundaries, wage wars and build empires. And for anyone not actually in a position of power to align themselves with.

All power comes from building alliances with your enemy's enemy which is how collaborations come about, it doesnt really matter where they come from

Theres nothing unusual or uncommon about it in all human history.

Does this make sense to anyone else Confused

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 03/06/2022 23:02

Oh yes of course I see that.

I was meaning more about how people living in England, just there because that's where they are born, who don't have any money or own anything, feel an English identity and an affinity to the English crown when it's just something that passes between the international ruling people.

Yes, we had James II, but the country thought he was too catholic, so dumped him for William of Orange and James's daughter Mary.

They were dutch protestants and relocated a lot of protestants to areas of Ireland to ethnically cleanse out the catholics.

So there are strong feelings either way in NI, those that celebrate 'king Billy' and those that saw him as an absolute leader of genocidal acts.

All the European Royals are pretty much related to one another, even if fairly distantly or by marriage. It has been going on for rather a long time, and I'm surprised you didn't know. We learned about it at primary school I think.

Did you know Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were cousins?

Mysterian · 03/06/2022 23:04

You're saying that the great great great grandchildren of immigrants are never really British? No matter how long your family have lived here you can never be 'one of us'?

hmmm

Yes, it makes perfect sense to me but I am Irish and we were taught this in school

Good King James and William of orange etc

bellac11 · 03/06/2022 23:07

Added bonus information, carrots werent originally orange as a majority species, I think it was developed for William as some sort of celebration. Carrots were either purple/white/yellow but an orange one was developed in celebration of him.

Yes I know that all the royals are related. They all look the same so you can tell anyway.

It's that bit around the nose and cheekbones; they all look the same in that area.

What is mad is having “royal families” in this time and age, when people no longer believe in superiority of blood lineages or that god dictates who “rules”… who are no longer “ruling” .

Madness but apparently the country collects quite a bit of money out of the Queen’s real estate.

Royals by definition do not integrate! That is the point of them.

Isn't it?

If you mean rub along with us down sainsburys or the pub, no

If you mean they rule over a country or state or whatever and then become a British/English monarch, and have their children, and their children's children born here, and contribute but also learn from customs of the country they rule over then yes they integrate

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 03/06/2022 23:15

Had to send out to Scotland when we ran out before then - James I/VI.

yesthatisdrizzle · 03/06/2022 23:18

If you go back far enough, I think you'll find everyone in the British Isles is an immigrant.

Although James was the son of Mary, who was the great granddaughter of Henry VII, she was half scottish, half French and James's father was the French king (cant remember which one)
