Would you say this dress is too young for a nearly 12 year old?

Is this dress too babyish for dd(11)?

at 12, it's up to her

TimeToChangeItUpNow · 03/06/2022 23:41

Yes definitely too toddler-ish to be worn with friends. Out with you, fine!

Too young as a dress. Fine as a nightie.

SSeveral people gave said this. Why is it ok to wear " younger" prints at night? I don't get it. But I know that lots of ladies
pyjamas have teddy bears and other cute characters printed on them!

I think the people saying it looks 'babyish' haven't looked at the design very closely! A three-eyed cat with the caption 'if you have a brain we will read your mind' ....

GreenAxolotl · 03/06/2022 23:46

Mine would wear it, I wish she was small enough too. But she is quirky, uninterested in fashion, loves cats and doesn’t care what anyone else thinks about what she wears as long as she is comfortable.

I agree with this, I think the writing is what would make mine want to wear it. She’d love the spooky, mindreading cats.

druto · 03/06/2022 23:48

love mini rodini! depends on her style

trainnane · 03/06/2022 23:51

Mine wouldn't wear it as all into shein & primark stuff.

ODFOx · 03/06/2022 23:57

My 17yo wears a similar dress with black leggings and DM boots.
I think a 10 year old is too old for it to look cute and too young for it to look quirky. Sorry.

leccybill · 03/06/2022 23:59

My 12 year old would wear it with leggings. She loves quirky stuff and is still very young. She mainly wears musicals merchandise and sun/moon/mystical type tshirts and leggings or flared crepe trousers.

Design Arc is a brand with some lovely pre teen stuff at TK Maxx.

GreenAxolotl · 04/06/2022 00:00

I’m really depressed by how many people think it’s too young. Why can’t we just let people wear what they want to wear?

SunnyOuToday · 04/06/2022 00:06

would wear it as sleepwear happily

Was thinking this. Looks like sleepwear and my 11 year old would wear something like that to bed but not out.

Emmelina · 04/06/2022 00:13

Mine would definitely wear that with striped tights and her boots, but she’s into moons and stars and mystical stuff, and especially cats.
she is also autistic mind, so her view of what’s age and socially appropriate may be slightly off :)

mathanxiety · 04/06/2022 00:14

Quirky isn't a style that comes across well on an 11 year old. Mind you, I don't like that Bodenrsque style on grown women either.

Having said that, it might look ok with a denim jacket slung over it and the currently fashionable white trainers with a slightly platform sole.

The point is which the girl might like it and adults in RL will be too polite to comment
If the girls peers say anything about it being babyish then it will get relegated to the back of the wardrobe never to see the light of day.

Yes the wording is older but few will read it.

Divebar2021 · 04/06/2022 07:32

When the original question was asked I wasn’t clear really what the reason for asking was. I’m still not really clear how long or short this dress is. However the OP has since clarified that her DD has chosen this herself so I’m not getting the problem. I have a 10 year old into fashion and my main issue is balancing her desire to be creative with her straying into clothing choices that I feel are too old for her. I want her to develop her own taste not just copy what every other 10 year old is wearing. I know a couple of girls who’d look great in that dress - definitely wearing with socks and maybe a high top trainer or boot. As long as she feels comfortable wearing it I think other people should keep their opinions to themselves. ( where’s it from by the way?)

GlamorousHeifer · 04/06/2022 07:47

I agree with ODFOx. She will be to old to pull it off as cute but too young to be going for quirky (unless you forgot to mention her existing wardrobe of emo/goth clothing!!)
Most 12 year olds won't have the patience for 'styling' an item every time they wear it, mine is more of a find it and throw it on dresser.....obviously not all kids are the same though.

Surely this isn't always true? I remember wearing a pair of clogs as a teenager as I was very into latest fashion & some of my friends were like wtf. I didn't care & loved them. They are back in again but now i prize comfort & style 😆

gulpsx · 04/06/2022 07:51

@Divebar2021 very cool Swedish kids brands mini rodini

gulpsx · 04/06/2022 07:52

Having said that I'm a Londoner & I think growing up her has made me braver. I notice other areas have more people dressing the same & conforming.

As a dress probably, but my dd (13) would wear it as sleepwear happily

To be honest, it looks like a nightie and not a dress.

But I agree with previous posters, what does your DD think?

I agree with this. I wouldn’t encourage my 11yo old to wear it as at that age it’s all about fitting in. My quirky 15yo is old enough to wear things like that now although that wouldn’t be her personal style. The hybrid in between age means it’s best avoided with friends and saved for loungewear, especially as she’s small for her age and most friends will be trying to look older.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 04/06/2022 07:55

I think it’s a cool outfit. Can’t believe so many people are saying it’s babyish. How depressing.
I like Mini Rodini stuff.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 04/06/2022 07:57

Christ on a bike, if she likes it, let her wear it! Her plan to combine it with cowboy boots sounds pretty cool and quirky to me.

RewildingAmbridge · 04/06/2022 07:57

Why are 10/11 year old wearing adult dresses should really be the question. It's fine OP and if she likes it that's all that matters. She's a child she's allowed to dress like one
