When was the last time you let yourself get hungry

I don’t mean “could do with something to eat” or eating because it’s the time to eat, I mean proper stomach rumbling/crampy empty stomach hungry.

Asking because I had a conversation with someone today re this and they said they haven’t actually felt physical hunger in years

Yesterday. Oh, and right now

GillyGumbo · 03/06/2022 22:55

All the time lately, I'm taking topiramate for migraines and it makes me feel so crap most days (yet headache free) that I don't bother to eat.

I had coffee and a muffin at 7.30 this morning but nothing since, so I'm empty and my stomach hurts. Taking the topiramate on an empty stomach will make me feel doubly shit tomorrow, so the cycle will begin again.

It's OK, I'm fat so I can afford to lose some weight.

Ragwort · 03/06/2022 22:58

I don't really get hungry Blush, this week I went 24 hours between meals trying to 'test' myself to see if I felt hungry, I didn't. I recognise that I do eat too much and should eat smaller meals .... but I am greedy.

TheMooch · 03/06/2022 22:58

Today. My fault. I had a tiny breakfast (handful.of granola) then hiked for 8 miles before we stopped for lunch.
I'm lucky, I know I can get myself super hungry and there will be food at some point.

Chickydoo · 03/06/2022 23:06

Today. Didn't have breakfast, worked until 3.00pm then had lunch around 3.30pm. Was really hungry by then.

worraliberty · 03/06/2022 23:09

Every day. I don't eat breakfast (just don't wake up hungry) so by lunchtime I'm ravenous.

As PPs have said, food tastes much better when you're really hungry.

FriendlyPineapple · 03/06/2022 23:12

Every day. I tend/try not to eat until lunchtime.

IDreamOfTheMoors · 03/06/2022 23:14

I don’t eat unless I’m properly hungry. Usually that means one good meal a day.

I couldn’t eat if I wasn’t hungry.

Shopgirl1 · 03/06/2022 23:15

I was starving at 1.30pm, had lunch then - had breakfast at 7.30am, then cycled 5km to work, had also walked about 6,000 steps.I was hungry again at dinner time at 7pm, I had around 13,000 steps by then in addition to having cycled another 16km - I had a plum and banana in the afternoon but was still hungry at 7pm.

I don’t eat breakfast but by 10/11 I’m always really belly rumbling hungry (up at 5:30).

Luckily I have a break around then so I often have a piece of fruit which sees me through until lunchtime.

If I don’t have my snack then I’m not hungry for lunch.

I used to not eat breakfast or lunch and only felt hungry for a short amount of time.
I think your brain switches off your hunger pangs after a certain time.

I also think the slimmer you are the hungrier you get.
I have skim friends who have to eat very regularly (meals and extra snacks) else they feel ill.

I know many people fast for weight loss but I would regularly fast without intending to and found that I put on weight/struggled to lose it.
So I make sure I always have at least lunch and dinner.
I wonder if the more often you eat, the more you feel hungry because your metabolism is working faster.

BertieBotts · 03/06/2022 23:31

It happens to me quite a lot. I get frustrated when I feel hungry TBH because it will happen a few hours after I've eaten a meal, but if I really think back a few mealtimes it usually means I've skipped lunch and/or breakfast over a couple of days and so it's catching up with me. I have ADHD and I forget to eat because I don't really do time and scheduling very well. But I also am not great at portion size and tend towards undereating. I just find food a bit of a chore.

It used to take me about three days to realise I hadn't eaten a meal, just snacks in that time. That was when I was a lot more unhealthy. I try to eat on a regular schedule now.

Competitive undereating in 1,2,3.......

Oh I REALLY don't undereat. What happens is that I get busy doing stuff ans then my stomach rumbles and I go oh yeah need to eat something.

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 04/06/2022 00:06

This morning. I had one crumpet for breakfast and then walked 10 miles. My stomach was rumbling loudly and felt totally empty by lunch time.

Delilahwasframed · 03/06/2022 21:58

Surely it would be the over-eaters who are generally hungry.

Nope, I got into the pattern of grazing and eating meals for the sake of it at meal times and because I was constantly topping up food in my belly I was never properly hungry.

I have been doing intermittent fasting recently, at one point I had a 2 hour eating window and I would have bouts of extreme hunger which would just come and go but I found it easier than I thought. I wasn't used to the physical experience of hunger as I hadn't experienced it for such a long time.

I need to be careful though because getting too hungry makes me reach for junk food and take aways.

Honestly many years ago, when I was not responsible for buying my own food etc, that was because yes the meals were nice but my appetite is largish and need ed a topup, but in General i m not overweight, but by medical standards in guessing I need to diet a bit to drop a stone or two.

Hawkins001 · 04/06/2022 00:45

I find that if I eat e.g. Sandwiches or sometimes normal meals, I tend to crave suggary foods like biscuits or cakes etc, not sure why it's certainly odd.

chchchchch · 04/06/2022 01:02

In my early 20s when I went to a uni ball, I didnt eat for two days (aside from a couple of salads) so I could fit into my tiny dress.

SoWhyArentYouDead · 04/06/2022 01:08

Some people here can’t be getting all the nutrients they need. And they must be teeny tiny.

Thebeastofsleep · 04/06/2022 07:50

Very rarely. If I don't eat breakfast, which I don't most day, I can easily skip lunch and generally force myself to eat it. If I eat breakfast I'm ravenous by 11am. I don't get the type of hunger you describe though. I feel sick rather than crampy. Once I start eating though I keep eating. I don't actually think it's great to be really hungry, so don't let myself get really hungry. I'm a healthy weight.

MrsJBaptiste · 04/06/2022 08:45

Most evenings and mornings! I fast between 8pm - 12pm and am generally hungry before bed, OK when I get up and very hungry by late morning.

Currently sat here feeling really quite peckish but will head to the gym shortly then eat when I'm home. That late breakfast will be lovely! 😋

HangingOver · 04/06/2022 08:47

Quite a lot....DP and I have very physical hobbies and regularly get home ready to chew our own arms off because we're so hungry. The kind of hungry where if you sit down for a moment you fall asleep!

TravellingSpoon · 04/06/2022 08:51

I always eat breakfast even though I am not always hungry in the morning. I eat it because I know that I may not get time to eat during my 12 hour shifts at work as there just isn't time. At the end of them I am always ravenous.

ifonly4 · 04/06/2022 09:10

I'm a nibbler, so don't go too long without eating (I do get stomach rumbles but address fairly soon) - still underweight by most people's standards though.

The last time I got really hungry was during a rough spell with little money. I'd go without snacks in afternoon when I was hungry so DD had fruit/a biscuit to come home to if needed. Then have a couple of value fishfingers and spoonful of value beans for tea, while she had a meal. Basically we cut back, so we could give her the best we could.

Natsku · 04/06/2022 09:10

I do intermittent fasting but most days I finish fasting before I get hungry (I drink a lot of black tea though, which tends to stop me feeling hungry) but occasionally I get busy around lunch time so end up breaking my fast later than usual and getting proper hungry. Though the last time I did that and got really really hungry I ended up eating a shed ton of crunchy cheetoes for my lunch because I was too hungry to make something.
