Trooping the colour. I have horse questions.

I have no hose knowledge aside from what I have learned from Jilly Cooper.

why do they nod their heads up and down so violently?

how do you ride with no hands like the band?

do they get to choose the colour of their horse? I’d like a grey one but there aren’t many of those.

what happens if they are really bad? Is there an understudy?

"They are cavalry horses. The white ropes are picket ropes, to allow the horses to be tied up safely in the horses lines when the troops would camp for the night."

Incredible!

Also unrelated to the horses but it's barbaric that they still use bearskin hats.

What should they do with them, throw them in landfill?
Theyre very old. It’s not like they’re making new ones….

I think it was Churchill not Reagan who said that.

I think as tax payers we should all be allowed a horse for the weekend.

Don't they get something akin to workers rights including a two week seaside holiday?

They do! They come to Holkham and canter along the beach every day and get to go swimming if they want. It is absolutely magnificent to watch. I would highly recommend heading there to watch one day of you can.

I hope they're well cared for. I guess it must be a good life for a horse?

I wouldn't consider it to be a good life for a horse personally. Spending so much time with a rider on your back, in training, in stalls, waiting around. They're well looked after in some respects but I doubt that it's how many horses would choose to spend their time if they could. Are they turned out often I wonder? It seems that they have relatively little time to behave as horses naturally do without being treated like playthings for humans.

Oh 😞
Well I hope they have a good long retirement at least.

Yes Burmese was a mare, she wasn't actually shot at but someone did fire a blank in the crowd, the Queen and Burmese barely moved an inch I still remember! Incredible.

Trumpeters get the grey horses apparently. In general grey horses are particularly keen on using their poo as a pillow and being as brown /green as possible. Other than the drum horses (generally considered the most senior horses) who have their own staff, the horses are groomed by their rider - so if you have a grey you're up a lot earlier for this kind of parade than if you have a bay or black!

So true.....
I did my Riding & Road Safety Test on a college horse, pure white - massive stable stain on his bum that I could not get out.
His name was Daz.
😂

I don't think that makes up for the rest of the year. Especially as it will include being ridden again, but I do love the thought of the horses going on the big wheel at Margate and walking along the beach, licking ice creams.

I wasn't sure - just had the quote in my brain as it is so true 💕

It isn't much of a break for the horses. It's just another training camp.

Northernlurker · 02/06/2022 12:47

Those who think the horses are having such a bad time, do pop along to a stable and try and get a horse to do something it doesn't want to do.
These are working animals.

Lisbeth50 · 02/06/2022 12:48

Riding is all about having a good seat/balance. Part of achieving this is learning to ride without reins. Carrying and playing an instrument at the same time looks hard though!

Prince Charles was best.
Either nerves of steel or dense as 😁

I read this as barbaric for the riders having to wear bear skin in hot weather...obviously on a different wavelength 😅

SpudsForBreakfast · 02/06/2022 12:56

These are working animals.

That's part of the problem. And humans do constantly get horses to do things that they would rather not do. Hence all the riding crops. bits, saddles, training, martingales, reins, spurs etc. Do you honestly think that's how those horses would choose to spend their time, if they had the choice?

Infinitely preferable to being turned out in the same boring paddock day in and day out, with neglected teeth and feet, as I see happening far too often.

Well that too, considering how often the poor buggers seem to faint, but my main concern is for the bears.

There is a happy medium as I'm sure you're aware. Turning out your horses doesn't mean that you have to neglect their basic welfare.

Burmese was a mare. Beautiful horse. Coped with being shot at one year!

Good grief! Was that in public?

And being in work doesn't mean they don't get turned out.

No because they wouldn’t exist. Same as dogs, would you outlaw them too? They wouldn’t exist either if not utilised by humans as work or pets.

This kind of knee-jerk ‘sooo cruel u should ban it’ reaction from people who know nothing about it is ridiculous.

I know nothing about horses either but I'm sitting here amazed at how beautiful they are. I like how the humans are perfectly choreographed but each horse is moving their heads differently and it gives the whole thing a bit of personality. I hope they're well cared for. I guess it must be a good life for a horse?

They are very well cared for. Every soldier has their own horse.
Every summer they all troop off to Norfolk for their hols and have a super time galloping on the beach

SpudsForBreakfast · 02/06/2022 13:16

Don't assume I know nothing about them. I used to ride, thank you. And personally no, I don't think species ceasing to exist for our benefit would harm the species themselves. And yes I do know that wild equids exist.

Again. It's a training camp not a jolly carefree romp on the beach
