Has anyone else's local Facebook group kicked off about the jubilee?

Our town council put up some bunting. It's red, white, blue, er, green and orange... They've basically reused some old bunting.

The result is that people have complained about it on the local Facebook group for not being, I dunno, flag like enough I guess?

Anyway, more people have piled on about the lack of events celebrating the event. There's a picnic in the park organised and a band will be playing. It's a town of around 8,000 people so I'm not sure what else is expected.

But this has led to someone else posting overnight about how we should "fuck the jubilee" because something something cost of living crisis / Prince Andrew / racism.

So now it's all kicked off and people are hurling insults at each other.

All because of a bit of bunting.

Anyone else's group gone a bit mad?

A few local cafes doing afternoon tea but apart from that nothing happening here, not even bunting. I’m also in Scotland and we’re basically seeing it as an extra day off, all the better because it’s looking like it will be sunny.

Now people are moaning because the red arrows flight path was changed and instead of flying over our town they came in over Essex. People have been stood outside for ages waiting for them…

It's all kicking off on our local FB pages over exclusive street parties. Some residents have applied to have their road closed for a street party, but have only invited some of the houses on the street!

One of the posts read like this:

JUST TO BE CLEAR, ONLY HOUSES 1-32 ARE ABLE TO JOIN IN TURPIN ROAD'S STREET PARTY.

With lots of angry replies from people who live in the same road, bit aren't on the guest list and had no idea it was even happening. It's a great read!

Excellent. Wasn’t there a thread like this from a MNer who hadn’t been invited to hers?

Ours has kicked off really nicely. Someone has obviously been involved in a hideous car crash and the car is a wreck, left in the road. The local busybody has asked whose car it is and can the remove it as the organising committee has worked very hard on the street party and the car is ruining the aesthetic.

Someone else has innocently asked where all the street parties are happening as they’d like to walk around with their kids to be told off by many many posts that YOU SHOULD STAY IN YOUR STREET THE RESIDENTS DONT WANT YOU AROUND EATING OUR FOOD AND USING OUR TOILETS

its all so beautiful and bananas

Someone in our town is going round to houses with the flags the wrong way, and posting these notes through the door at 1am! He’s on everyone’s cctv and doorbells 😂

I admire the use of ‘cretin’. Great word that doesn’t get used enough.

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 02/06/2022 15:22

We've had a shortage of bunting! Loads of people asking where has any, and telling each other where and when they managed to find some - a bit like toilet roll during first lockdown !
There was a huge queue outside one shop on Tuesday afternoon and it was announced that They Had Had A Delivery and would open the doors at 4pm to sell it.
Weirdly, we haven't actually seen any bunting/decoration on any houses...
Also, one poor lass had to go on at least three groups and explain that she had asked the council what was involved in closing the road for a street party, but couldn't manage the mountain of paperwork and decided not to bother. This needed explanation because the council gave the local -barely literate printed 100 miles away rag paper the list of street closures and they printed it with her street on it, (bit not the whole street) causing chaos as nobody knew anything about it 😁

SpindleSheWrote · 02/06/2022 15:40

Our council has fucked up, implying that a jubilee picnic on Sunday is 'free' (small print: 'refreshments available or bring your own picnic').

The available food is all coming from commercial vans. The 'free' bit is some music, and access to the park (which is always free anyway).

Looking forward to the outraged posts that the fucking caaaancil didn't provide free burgers, drinks, and taxis home.

Wow that's such a rude note! And very nonPC with the use of "cretin".

Though I suppose someone so enraged by upside down flags isn't going to be the most progressive individual Grin

That's because it's dying out as it's an insult to people with intellectual disability.

TheRoadToRuin · 02/06/2022 16:10

Games and bring your own picnic and booze on the village green. A singer in the evening and Bob the gardener is doing a disco.
Virtually nothing on FB about it so I don't know if anyone will go.
Bunting has appeared all over the place today, plus some big flags on poles.
I normally feel uncomfortable with flags on poles but it seems a bit party pooperish over this. Several Ukraine flags mixed in.

Hellsbe · 02/06/2022 16:20

Completely ignored where I am. I’m hoping Andrew us a sweaty nonce reaches number 1😀

wonkylegs · 02/06/2022 20:38

Ours kicked off because someone nicked the bunting from one half of the village and lots of people insinuating it must be people from the other half of the village (I suspect drunk teenagers are more likely)
Our village is very long and split by a bridge ... which also apparently the divide for 'them & us'
When we moved here I got in trouble for inviting people from the other half of the village to ours for a party 🤦‍♀️ locals are weird about which end you are from, I am not really bothered... the more the merrier.
Villages can be batshit crazy!

Spudlet · 02/06/2022 20:46

No kicking off here. There is a shitload of bunting wherever you look, and various activities. We popped down to the village shindig this evening but didn’t stay as DS won’t eat hog roast and that was the only food option, unfortunately.

KatherineofGaunt · 02/06/2022 21:17

A large length of the flag bunting outside the church in my parents' small town got nicked earlier this week, so they've replaced it with multi-coloured bunting they would usually use for a fete or something. I'd love to know if it's all kicking off on their FB page!

We are having a street party and I am really looking forward to it! We've not been here long, plus Covid, so it'll be a chance to meet some more neighbours and have a jolly time!

Deathraystare · 03/06/2022 07:34

Well as long as they are all enjoying themselves!!!!!

Happylittlethoughts · 03/06/2022 08:52

Buntting woukd be bad enough but the Orange would start an absolute riot here though... I think physical riot if that was up
People ignoring mercifully.

CHiSOCG · 03/06/2022 08:55

It’s going to bloody rain anyway 😅

Dinotour · 03/06/2022 08:57

I think it's great if they're reusing bunting, no need to buy new for the sake of it- sustainability and money wise a win. Nothing kicking off here, there was pre jubilee when people would post asking what was going on and the inevitable you could have helped organise something (the council do something the last weekend in June so have kept with that rather than move it forward which is fair enough)- I think they thought people might have their own plans and attendance would be low.

newnamethanks · 03/06/2022 09:06

Jubilee ho hum, not bothered, hope everyone has a good time doing whatever they do. I love the post box toppers, what a great idea. Admiration to all contributors. I hope someone's collecting photos of all of them for a book I'd be happy to buy.

Zoeslatesttrope · 03/06/2022 09:16

@BuwchGochGota there is now a substitute up!

CandidaAlbicans2 · 03/06/2022 15:40

Nothing on Facebook but some bloke started a thread on NextDoor saying how "very disappointed" he is with the lack of houses putting up decorations for the Jubilee, and that putting up bunting was showing respect to "Her Majesty". And when people were mentioning social inequality and poverty as one reason, he did the classic "I was brought up in real poverty at the end of WWII" and how there are no poor people nowadays as he bets they have a smart phone, a tv, PlayStation etc, (he forgot to mention that the TVs are flat-screen😄) and how jobs are advertised everywhere, so no excuse not to have money. Oh and he topped it of by saying no need to be living on the street, plenty of help and charity available these days 🙄I was going to comment but I really can't be arsed.
