Has anyone else's local Facebook group kicked off about the jubilee?

Our town council put up some bunting. It's red, white, blue, er, green and orange... They've basically reused some old bunting.

The result is that people have complained about it on the local Facebook group for not being, I dunno, flag like enough I guess?

Anyway, more people have piled on about the lack of events celebrating the event. There's a picnic in the park organised and a band will be playing. It's a town of around 8,000 people so I'm not sure what else is expected.

But this has led to someone else posting overnight about how we should "fuck the jubilee" because something something cost of living crisis / Prince Andrew / racism.

So now it's all kicked off and people are hurling insults at each other.

All because of a bit of bunting.

Anyone else's group gone a bit mad?

After all the past 2 years of shit, lockdowns, restrictions etc what's wrong with having a bit of fun?
No matter what's going on anywhere, there's always a bunch of miserable fun sponges complaining because people are daring to be happy.
So just enjoy your sour faced misery and leave everyone else alone!!

Enjoy your damp egg sandwich. It’s gonna piss down.

SlatsandFlaps · 01/06/2022 21:36

So you thought you'd start your own row on Mumsnet

Lots of complaints about the lack of bunting/flags and not enough events. The shops on the high street have all decorated their windows, and there is a picnic in the park with bands but apparently this isn't enough. My street have decorated and there will be a community pot luck on Friday plus games, and one of the neighbours will complain massively as usual. Which everyone enjoys tbh as she is so miserable

Pot luck?

FayeFife · 01/06/2022 21:41

There isn’t a murmur of anything on our residents page except someone’s lame attempt to cash in by making up jubilee goody bags. They got one like.
We’re in Scotland though. Scottish people don’t seem to connect with the royals in the same way. No one is talking about it bar discussing plans (non jubilee related) for the holiday weekend.

kessiebird · 01/06/2022 21:51

Someone got upset about the Union Jack being called the Union Jack. Apparently its the Union Flag and they can't stand it when people get it wrong. Kicked off for a while.

My Dad was telling me about this the other day!! Apparently when it's flying on land it's the Union flag, when it's flying at sea (or something to that affect) it's the Union Jack!! I don't think it will have been him kicking off though 🤣 he just likes to keep his ranting between me and him!!!

Pot luck?

I think 'pot luck' is when everyone takes a plate of food or a pan of hot food and the luck is that there's enough for all and enough variety for everyone's taste. It's like 'bring a plate of something to the buffet' where it usually works out ok with a mixture of sweet and savoury. I went to a 'pot luck' in the USA and that's what it was.

upinaballoon · 01/06/2022 23:13

They were selling Union Jacks in the butcher's shop today. "Five chops and a Union Jack please." "Just £45.36, please, madam."
It's nearly as much fun as that run-up week to Charles and Di's wedding, but only we oldies can remember that. The dustbin men had a whacking big Union Jack on the side of the dust-cart and we all cheered when they went by.
And then the fairytale couple got divorced but we didn't give our fun back.

Sour faced misery is a bit extreme..... not everyone supports the monarchy. It's okay to not enjoy all this shite

Lots of people got upset that the council hadn't put up flags.

Then they put up flags (which they had clearly already bought and had ready to go, just not up yet) then some people complained about the cost 🙄

Same here, also Scottish. Everyone ignoring the royal connection but looking forward to extra time off work/school. The Union Jack stuff can be tetchy round here. Not a single bit of bunting to be seen Grin

Disneyblueeyes · 01/06/2022 23:29

Someone complained about so many flags being upside down.
Christ.

I'll just leave this here.

Brilliant....soon to be followed by my husband's bun ting efforts 😂

ElephantsFart · 01/06/2022 23:59

One gammon kicked off about why there was so little going on in my town and no bunting. There were a few replies explaining that there were some events for old people, and the majority told him they weren’t celebrating the jubilee because they don’t like the royals.

It takes other people to have a row, therefore if other people behave and respond professionally, then how can a row be had ?

SpindleSheWrote · 02/06/2022 00:03

Our Next Door website seems quite apathetic really, other than the united loathing of Andrew.

MuddlingAlong1234 · 02/06/2022 00:04

This sounds very similar to a post on a local Facebook page to me. It’s caused a right stir. But have noticed a few houses making an effort.
I personally don’t know enough about how the town I live operates such things. In terms of volunteers and organisations but my assumption was maybe not enough volunteers/interest was behind it 🤷🏼‍♀️ But I could be wrong.

Zoeslatesttrope · 02/06/2022 04:30

@BuwchGochGota aw shame you missed it.
Local groups now enquiring how council can't manage to collect bins regularly but have time and staff to spontaneously remove tributes. Local community councillor has put in request to county council to have the scarecrows back. Has said they can keep the toilet.

carefullycourageous · 02/06/2022 07:01

Is it just me that thinks the idea of a community pot luck lunch is completely <bleurgh> as you'd have no idea who made the food.

MinnieMountain · 02/06/2022 07:04

Complaints about lack of bunting in the city centre, then a discussion about whose fault it is- the newly elected Labour mayor or the previous Conservative mayor.

MaverickSnoopy · 02/06/2022 07:10

Ours have fallen out over the lack of event advertising. Most people no clue that anything is on. Tbf it's been advertised but it doesn't really say what's involved so no one really knew what a big event it would be. Also not showing up in the algorithm for most people. Lots of people saying all you have to do is Google and others saying how do you know to Google when you think nothing is on. So now we know an event is on and people are still fighting.

hartof · 02/06/2022 07:13

Someone in our town is going round to houses with the flags the wrong way, and posting these notes through the door at 1am! He’s on everyone’s cctv and doorbells 😂

Has anyone else's local Facebook group kicked off about the jubilee?
Jewel1968 · 02/06/2022 07:22

My knowledge of Royal family has been built watching the Crown so I might not be totally up to speed. One thing I picked up from watching it is they are very finely tuned to the mood of the public and will respond as necessary. So, if there is a negative vibe sweeping the country expect a charm offensive.

Wouldn't bother me who makes my food, just wish someone would!

FourChimneys · 02/06/2022 08:09

There is a lot going on in our town, four days of events. All massively publicised with dozens of posters in town, a leaflet through every door, posts from the council on local Facebook pages, details in a free magazine which goes to every home etc, etc. All of that giving details of time and place, parking, access etc. None of this has stopped numerous people posting questions asking what is happening, where it is and what time it starts 🙄
