Irish passport - does it extend to husband?

My paternal grandad was Irish and I'm going to apply for an Irish passport this year once I'm married. I want freedom to move around the eu again basically !
I was just wondering does anyone know if for example I came into a situation where I could move to Ireland or even Spain etc does it apply to my husband too? So because he is my husband he gets it through me by proxy? He cannot apply for an Irish passport because it isn't in his heritage. I know I would also have to apply for my children too.
Thanks

either way as british citizens you can just move to ireland if you want without needing irish passports.

You have to show and send the original birth certificate of the Irish relative, which I know has caused issues for some people

I recently obtained my dads BC, so that I can apply for my passport. I had been put off doing it as I thought it would be difficult, but it ended up being very straight forward.

I emailed Dublin records office first, to make sure dads birth was recorded correctly (online records only go up to 1921), got a confirmation within about 20 mins.

There are then 2 options to apply - an online application, or fill in a form and email back, they then send a payment link.

I tried the online option but it wouldn’t accept any of my UK payment cards, I think maybe the 2 stage authentication caused an issue.

So I then tried the form option, expecting it to take weeks, but within just over a week, I received the payment link, which worked. I paid for registered post and had BC a few days later.

One of my tasks this weekend is to do the online Irish passport application - has anyone done this recently, if so, did the payment system work? I am wondering if I will have same problem as with BC application?

I did mine online with no problems. Be prepared though, it took 4 months for me to get the passport!

OP you don’t need to apply for an Irish passport. You need to apply for Irish citizenship. As a citizen you can then apply for a passport if you want but you don’t have to.

In your situation, your grandparent was Irish. Your parent was also automatically Irish by virtue of being born to an Irish citizen, they did not need to apply for citizenship. But if you (grandchild) want to be Irish it doesn’t happen automatically, you will have to apply to be put on the Foreign Birth Register.

Once you are on the FBR you are an Irish citizen and any children you give birth to after that date will also be able to apply for citizenship. If your children were born before you became an Irish citizen they will not be eligible to become citizens. Your spouse also does not get citizenship. However if you go to live in Ireland they can accompany you and in time apply for their own citizenship.

Oh and you will need ALL of the certificates - birth, marriage and death - for your parent, grandparent and yourself. Church certificates are not accepted, they have to be from the registrar.

OP your post just popped up again tonight. My other half is British as am I and we will be moving to EU next year. He has just received his Irish passport. We never voted to leave either. Have you got sorted yet?

Irish passports are for people who were born on the island of Ireland or had a parent or grandparent who were.

My dh was born in Belfast so he and our 3 dc have Irish passports. I'd have to live there for I think 3 years to qualify. Might be 5.

I am applying on the same basis as yourself my grandfather was born in Ireland and my father was born to an English mother in England and has never applied for an Irish passport but I am under the impression I can apply with the correct documentation
