What or how has the Queen affected your life?

Just wondering what or how the Queen has affected your life? Just curious

queen hasn’t affected my life either negatively or positively, so was wondering if this was generally the case or not?

im not against the monarchy and struggling to get excited about the jubilee, so was looking for other view points and experiences

She's just always BEEN THERE. No affected negatively or positively but I am no royalist. Grateful for extra day's bank holiday too although not doing anything Jubilee related

Eightieschildren · 30/05/2022 15:29

She’s had no effect on my life. I wish the monarchy would end after the queen pops her clogs. They seem pointless to me; totally entitled and out of touch. Definitely not doing anything jubilee related.

ILIWYS · 30/05/2022 15:31

No effect at all on my life. Nothing at all against her and wish her well but no strong feelings towards (or against) her.

No impact whatsoever.

Needmorelego · 30/05/2022 15:34

Like everyone under 70 I don't know anything different so couldn't say but there are things like the Duke of Edinburgh award (taken by 1000s children) that might not exist if we didn't have the royal family. The royal family creates massive amounts of tourism - which brings in money so the UK might be very different if we didn't have that.

Grasscrowns · 30/05/2022 15:35

Do the royal family actually bring in the tourists, though? I’ve seen this argument before and I’m skeptical about it, given none of them will actually meet the royals.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 30/05/2022 15:36

I got a free commemorative mug and a great school party for her silver jubilee, which I liked as a child..

Other than that, nada.

Oh, extra bank hol this year 😁

TitInATrance · 30/05/2022 15:40

No impact on my life at all and I would be happy to see a much more streamlined, less powerful and less subsidised monarchy. The only argument for not getting rid of the lot of them is that we would end up having a politician as head of state, but with the Queen palling up with Sheik Mohammed how much worse could it be?

ResentfulLemon · 30/05/2022 15:40

I pay extra tax for her and her family to exist...despite the fact they are millionaire land owners without the public investment into their lives.

No positive impact beyond the extra bank holiday this week so overall a negative impact I'd say.

Needmorelego · 30/05/2022 15:41

@Grasscrowns interesting thought. I suppose it's all about the going to London and seeing the Changing of the Guard outside Buckingham Palace etc that tourists do.
If we no longer had a royal family would we have kept royal palaces and maintained them? Would people still want to visit them? Who knows...?

ResentfulLemon · 30/05/2022 15:41

Although I concede that the Tories would find a way to siphon off 'royal tax allocation' to their mates if old Betty wasn't on the throne so wouldn't be financially better off with the formation of a republic.

People still want to visit Versailles, don't they? People still appreciate architecture and history.

Dunrobin Castle and Castle Howard are two of my favourite castles to visit. They're popular even though they never were royal castles.

This really.

Very few of us will know life without the Queen being the Queen - or those that do will have been children, (and there was still a king).

I think the DofE Award has been a phenomenal thing.
I know it is a popular thing on MN to sneer at the Royal Family, but there are hundreds of thousands of people who have felt really appreciative of their millions of visits over the decades to support hundreds of thousands of fantastic projects across the UK and the World.
We were very honoured to have been invited to both Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace due to my dcs' achievements. They were very special days, and I'm not ashamed to admit how exciting it was to be invited.
I'd far rather my charities / volunteering projects / organisations had royal patrons and royal visits than any kind of link with 99% of current day politicians.

Tontostitis · 30/05/2022 15:56

Saved me from President Blair and first Lady Bags o cash. Similarly Brexit saved us again

Pemba · 30/05/2022 15:57

No effect really. The Windsors should be phased out after Elizabeth goes.

I used to tolerate them before and I enjoyed both Royal weddings. I thought that Meghan joining the family was great and a chance for them to modernise. So disappointed with how that has gone and how the media, and small minded morons poured out their vitriol on H&M.

But the worst thing of all was the whole Prince Andrew thing. Just disgusting. And the Queen showed very poor judgement IMO in apparently backing him.

So I'm ashamed of them really, and our warped, forelock-tugging relationship to them. Time they went.

JustTheOneSwan · 30/05/2022 15:59

I lent her £30 at bingo in 1985.
Never paid it back just mocks me from my purse.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 30/05/2022 16:01

No affect on my life at all. I recall getting a cup for Silver Jubilee at school when I was 8 or so.

I have no feelings either way but they're a privileged family who I personally think don't really belong in today's society, or not in the way our RF are treated.

DisgruntledPelican · 30/05/2022 16:02

She held up my walk home once as police escorted her car up the Royal Mile, but that’s all. I don’t begrudge it.

Needmorelego · 30/05/2022 16:02

@HereIAmBrainTheSizeOfAPlanet yes it's true. People flock to what were once royal palaces all over the world. Would people still visit Buckingham Palace without the royal family existing? I suppose yes as long as it's maintained.
I think it's an unanswerable question because we don't know any difference. For those over 70 it was The King rather than the Queen. No one knows a different UK.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 30/05/2022 16:03

@Grasscrowns - see I think they do bring in the tourists but that's by visiting Buckingham Palace, watching Changing of the Guard etc. My ex fiance from years ago was Canadian and was a real Royal fan (also in the army). I didn't really get that, at all. But his regiment (Princess Patricia's?) he'd met royalty etc. Meant nothing to me at all.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/05/2022 16:03

I’m sick of paying tax to support them all.

CornishPorsche · 30/05/2022 16:06

Her Maj has been my technical employer for over 20 years, same for DH. I have a lot of time for the old bird.

But I am a monarchist. I love tradition, pomp and circumstance, uniforms and fancy celebrations. I also like progress though, which the Royal Family are a bit slow at.

I often wish she could actually step in and deal with Parliament / boot out incompetent PMs / sort crappy legislation but it would defeat the object of a democracy. Not sure it could be worse than the current shower of shit though.

Rayray18 · 30/05/2022 16:07

She amazes me that she has lived through so many key events in history e.g. world war 2, introduction of the NHS, abdications, miners strikes, numerous prime ministers, death of Diana, and a pandemic. She's been the one constant, I've only ever known one monarch. She has very rarely put a foot wrong and I think she sets a great example for resilience and duty. Yet I am aware she hasn't been perfect and I know the royals have problems (I'm talking about you Andrew!). But I just can't imagine Great Britain without the Queen. She makes me smile when I see her on TV. Unlike Boris who makes my blood boil every time he opens his mouth!

EdithStourton · 30/05/2022 16:08

Bloody good party for the Silver Jubilee.
Excellent fireworks ditto.
Good party on the green along the road for the Golden Jubilee.
Adult DC coming home for the long weekend.
Seeing a rehearsal for trooping the colour (I have a soft spot for pageantry and horses).
DC doing D of E.

And I enjoy having a head of state who isn't political and stays in post for decades.

sleepymum50 · 30/05/2022 16:11

Her real birthdays on the same day as mine, so she really takes the shine off it.

it’s always “sorry but she’s invited us already, and we’ve got to go ‘cos she’s the Queen”. I never get to invite the people I really want to my parties because they’re “busy”. She only does it to spite me.
