What or how has the Queen affected your life?

Just wondering what or how the Queen has affected your life? Just curious

queen hasn’t affected my life either negatively or positively, so was wondering if this was generally the case or not?

im not against the monarchy and struggling to get excited about the jubilee, so was looking for other view points and experiences

Like everyone under 70 I don't know anything different so couldn't say but there are things like the Duke of Edinburgh award (taken by 1000s children) that might not exist if we didn't have the royal family. The royal family creates massive amounts of tourism - which brings in money so the UK might be very different if we didn't have that.

I doubt tourists come to the UK to actually see the Queen. The buildings and history they do come to see would still be there without a royal family

ivykaty44 · 30/05/2022 18:30

Doesn't matter of it's 1p or £1000, why should each and every one of us have to give up money for one family to live a life of luxury? Why not give me the £1.29 from everyone, ir you, or someone equally deserving

you'd still pay it to fund a president if we didn't have a queen

A president is elected though. A queen isn’t.

I wasn’t bothered about her UNTIL her backing of Andrew. It was disgraceful. Having him in her car in front of all the photographers on the way to Xmas mass or whatever after the Virginia Roberts case was in full glare of the world was a big, fat “fuck you”.

I couldn't agree with you more, it was appalling and I completely lost respect for her after that.

We fund a Prime Minister, why would we need to fund a president?

FrecklesMalone · 30/05/2022 19:35

She and her family have done absolutely nothing for me. I 100% think the royals should end with the queen. She is like a likeable old aunt that I've never met (I have a few across the world). But don't want anything more after she goes.

Ostryga · 30/05/2022 19:36

I was once in the local paper because I’d drawn a picture of the queen at my school fair. That was pretty cool.

Apart from that, nothing. A good discussion point maybe.

I’m sick of paying tax to support them all.

You don't. Revenue from Crown estate £400m, goes straight to the Government and she receives 15% of that back. In theory, she could keep all of it.

HelenHywater · 30/05/2022 19:48

Not a thing. I find the whole lot of them and their wealth and privilege obscene.

FloweryCurtainTwitcher · 30/05/2022 19:59

The helicopters of her and her many offspring annoy me as they take off and land. Other than that I cant think of any direct impact she has had.

Basilbrushgotfat · 30/05/2022 20:00

I get the odd bank holiday in her honour. Think that's it.

DoraSpenlow · 30/05/2022 20:11

Not the Queen but Princess Anne (and I am sure it would have been the same for any of the Royal Family) attended an annual event for the charity I volunteer for. We made nearly 10 times more money that we usually did.

FourChimneys · 30/05/2022 20:11

I had to promise to serve her as a Brownie, before I realised what a nonsense that was.

I had to teach a bunch of children to sing God Save the Queen for the 50th, despite being an atheist anti-monarchist.

Other than that, nothing really. My DC enjoyed their DofE expeditions though.

This Jubilee will pass me by.

0utwitted · 30/05/2022 20:19

She hasn't, especially as I'm Irish. But I think it's interesting to observe women who are well respected. She's one of the few women who's never really been TORN apart for what she's worn, or her weight... That's how important you have to be to escape the scrutiny?! I think the Queen is similar to a lot of successful women, she has no immediate visible reaction to anything. She thinks about things and then responds. Nobody could have judged her for retiring at 80 but she has kept going and going. I think Kate is similar to the Queen tbh. Naturally charismatic but not overbearing in anyway. Heaven forbid, I suppose.

But presumably, if the monarchy came to an end, the government would keep 100% of that.
They won't be allowed to keep the crown lands if that happens.

whiteroseredrose · 30/05/2022 20:29

Not massively.

However, without them we'd probably end up with Presidents. Not that great in the US and France IMO.

Better to have a non-political Head of State.

Mumwantingtogetitright · 30/05/2022 20:37

No impact on my life personally, no, though I do recognise some of her contributions as a head of state.

I'm a republican at heart because I just don't think it makes any sense in this day and age to have a hereditary monarchy. However, I do see that the Queen has a strong sense of public duty and I can see some advantages in having an apolitical head of state and in her longevity of service. She has certainly been around for a long time! Overall, I don't support the institution of the monarchy and I think we should probably get rid of it when she dies, but I don't dislike her personally. I have very little respect for her children though.

Bunnyfuller · 30/05/2022 20:38
  1. total waste of a day and a new toilet built for her and Phil to visit a venue I worked at when I was 18.
  2. technically worked for her for 30+ years in RAF and the police.Ditto her family who I have seen in combat zones but not in combat.
  3. my taxes pay for her and her family while they all have obscene fortunes stashed away from British taxes.
The Royal Family needs to cease to exist after her demise. People come for the history not the vague hope of seeing a royal. We are being taken for mugs. Enough already.
MosaicBlues · 30/05/2022 20:52

I did like her televised speech in lockdown. Whoever writes her speeches is very good at them and the image of stability her long life presented in that moment was quite nice. She’s seen it all, and this was just the icing on the cake!

Pedallleur · 30/05/2022 21:35

Bit like the Loch Ness Monster, none sees it but tourists pay money in the hope of doing so. The Queen has done nothing for most of us. Just a story perpetuated by the elite to keep the whole thing going imo. Lives a fantastic life in various homes. Owns some lovely homes and land plus whatever else they have hidden away. I suspect the finances are a grey area and there isn't a clear cut ours/hers divide.

TottersBlankly · 30/05/2022 21:41

This is perfection. Stunningly accurate.

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2022 21:46

I want my £1.29 back.

I used to be puzzled by the 'to serve the Queen', line at Brownies.
We had to sing the national anthem at school once or twice but I didn't know why we sang, "God save our Queen". I always wondered what she needed saving from.
I see her on money and stamps.

My interpretation is that "save the Queen" means to keep her safe, rather than to save her from something. It's an old-fashioned way of saying it.

ShirleyJackson · 30/05/2022 21:51

Did DofE.

That’s about it.

AdoraBell · 30/05/2022 21:53

DH benefited from the London Sailing Project, which was supported by Duke of Edinburgh. Without that he have no confidence due to being bullied by his abusive father.
