Midsommar is an excellent film if you get it, but I wouldn't say it's harrowing. Maybe the cliff scene would upset you if you're sensitive to gore.

It was a while ago I saw it but I'm thinking about the scene involving Florence Pugh's sister/parents and the bit with the bear (or rather, the bit with part of the bear 😁) and the subsequent fire - and yes, the cliff jumps and what followed for one of the jumpers, but also the scene in the barn (?) with the sex ritual and all the naked elder ladies watching and mimicking the sounds?! It wasn't frightening but, as I said, WTF-worthy

Pihu

Absolutely one of the most memorable and harrowing films to exist.

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 30/05/2022 23:27

BettyBootsie Oh yeah, the bear!

It is very wtf but there are so many layers to it. I was surprised I liked it so much because I didn't like Hereditary at all.

Dundonian · 30/05/2022 23:29

Escape from Sobibor. Without a doubt.

Jody21 · 30/05/2022 23:30

Watership Down has been mentioned loads on this thread - one of my favourite films growing up! I didn't see it as harrowing at all but rather the opposite as they overcame so many obstacles and fought tooth and nail (literally) to find their forever home.

However, I bought my DC a box set of the Animals of Farthing Wood and we never finished it as it was so depressing - it was like Game of Thrones only animated, every episode one of the main characters got bumped off, usually in a gruesome manner! I hadn't seen it before and thought it was a kids show but it's really not at all cute and fluffy. Still don't know if they got their forever home?

highdaysandholudays · 30/05/2022 23:32

Million Dollar Baby. When he tells her what Mo Cushlie means. I cried my leg off at that film. Hilary Swank is outstanding.

Thursa · 30/05/2022 23:34

The Killing Fields
Glory
Amistad

BlackandBlueBird · 30/05/2022 23:45

Has anyone seen County Lines? It’s about a 14 year old boy swept up in drug dealing. I found that pretty harrowing; just thinking about how many kids are in that exact position right now.

I watched that just a couple of weeks ago.
Awful.

Noonado · 30/05/2022 23:57

The Red Riding Trilogy. 13 years since I watched it and it still haunts me.

OldSpeclkledHen · 31/05/2022 00:00

Some episodes of American Horror Story (Cult? The nail gun scene🙈🙈🙈)

Cucumber, the episode where the guy gets his head whacked in

Not harrowing (imo) but just finished This Is Us, that was good 😊

Blueberrywitch · 31/05/2022 00:10

Whistleblower - I frequently remember a particularly horrible scene. Unfortunately it was based on a true story as well.

Yes-it's very bleak...

Areyoiboredyet · 31/05/2022 00:39

Little boy blue about the murder of Rhys Jones, and Anne(? I think) about the Hillsborough disaster - I still remember watching in disbelief on the tv. Also When they see us on Netflix had me in tears especially the last part

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/05/2022 02:49

Eden Lake.
The boy in the stripe pyjamas
Final destination 3 (The sunbed scene)

TuxedoJunction · 31/05/2022 06:34

Another one saying ‘Hostel’. Didn’t the Bratislavian tourist board try and take Quentin Tarantino to Court over it? I’m sure I remember reading something about it. Hardly surprising, as I remember saying to DH that I’d never want to go there. The plausibility made it so awfully real….

in a similar vain to the above is the 1970s film (with Peter Fonda), ‘Race with the Devil’. The ending is quite something.

Also agree with ‘Handmaids Tale’……. Again it’s that premise that you can see how society slid into this existence that makes it so horrific.

PugInTheHouse · 31/05/2022 09:05

I found When They See Us one of the most harrowing things I've ever seen, it's just so shocking it wasn't really that long ago. There was a programme after when the actual people involved and the actors were on Oprah I think and I sobbed throughout.

I find anything about James Bulger on TV extremely upsetting. I also read the books his mum and dad wrote and didn't sleep for days.

I agree with others re This Is Us, not necessarily harrowing but I think for the first 4 series I cried pretty much every episode.

CatsArePeople · 31/05/2022 18:25

I absolutely must mention this one - Turtles Can Fly

Deathraystare · 31/05/2022 18:30

Love Horror films, the gory-er the better! I usually laugh at them!

However, I think Eden Lake was shocking because it could be so real and I won't watch the Serbian film again!

I really don’t get how Toy Story 3 is harrowing. For me, I Daniel Blake and Sorry We Missed You. Couldn’t watch either of them again.

MarshaBradyo · 31/05/2022 18:46

I’ve not seen Threads but earlier posts have just motivated me to text dh to say let’s watch it tonight

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 31/05/2022 19:06

Last house on the left , has a really graphic rape scene

Water ship down, watched it as a child never again. None of my dc have seen it and one of thems nearly 30

Watched half of the first hostel. Never again!

2lostsouls · 31/05/2022 19:28

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle. Saw it in the cinema and spent most of it sobbing into someone’s shoulder. I don’t remember anything about it, but I had glandular fever and there was something about it that totally traumatised me. Unsurprisingly I haven’t seen it mentioned on this thread by anyone else!
